Good looking

Looks real good. I hope to fly mine sometime soon. My graphics should be here next week. I don't want to fly her till she is completely finished and that is all I am waiting on. Is the recomended aileron throw enough? I guess I have been flying to many IMAC birds, you know the ones get all the throw you can.
Any ways looks real good and hope it flies as good as she looks.

Flys great! Very smooth and responsive. Aileron throws were good but I used about 1/2" for elevator throw on low rate and recommended on high rate (never used high rate). Stalls straight ahead at a walk and lands nice and easy. Made my own instrument panel and added guns. No other mods.

How did the install go with the YS 91 ( CG ect.) Also, how is the performance with it? Thanks Bob

Ys 91 bolted right in to supplied mount. Since it's a little heavier engine I had to put the battery aft above the scoop. Balanced right on the money and flys good at that CG. Performance is fast with 14x8 prop.

What brand of pilot did you guys use? That is the only part I need to buy now and ofcourse wait on the red spinner to get off back order.

I used a Williams Brothers 1/6 scale WW2 pilot. My wife painted it for me and it looks great. Also fits perfectly. She paints all my pilots for me and they always look good. She is thinking of buying a few different pilots and painting them and selling them at flyins. Only mistake I made was after I glued the canopy on I realized I forgot to put the goggles on him. :stupid: I got lucky on the spinner. Our LHS ordered one for me and said it was the last one. Everyone who got the plane around here is waiting for their's. :D

I used a H-9 1/7th scale WWII pilot. Made my own instrument panel though because of that stupid decal. Oh yeah - guns too.

How did you make your guns? Also how did you run your antenna? Did you drill through the fuse behind the canopy and run it to the top of the vertical stab?

I did what you said for the antenna. As for the guns - after trying different methods on a scrap leading edge, I ended up with two pieces of carbon fiber tube from the kite store. One is 1/4" thick wall and the other is 1/8" and fits exactly in the larger tube. Cut the large tube to a length that puts about 1/4" into the wing and about 3/16ths outside. Cut the smaller tube to protrude about 1/8th " beyond. Glue the two tubes together with med CA and make 6 assemblys. Drill 6, 1/4 " holes in the leading edge ( I did them on the Black stripe) and glue the guns in with med CA. I touched up the edges with a little silver paint to give them some definition too.

added robart air gear after my 1st flight. i left gear down and wanted to fly it around. after i landed, i couldn't get the gear to cycle, so since i am building a gs p-51 over the winter, i wanted to try pneumatic gear. install was pretty easy, only a little bit of enlarging the retract bays. Robart HD 606 plus robostruts.

now, what was fun was my 1st flight. i had a friend build my "arf" for me cause he does beautiful work. and he is very picky with his work. but my 1st flight was horrible, twitchy, almost lots it several times, finally got it trimmed out. and it was passable but certainly not easy.

when i was installing the retracts, i wanted to recheck my cg. the book says 4.75" from leading edge. my friend thought, the would be from the straight portion of the leading edge. ITS NOT!!! its from the fuse, where the wing "breaks".

difference in cg. about 1.5" hmm...maybe that's why it was so "fun" to fly!!

oh well, live and learn. and now, with the new robart gear, additional weight is only 4oz with everything, and the cg is now perfect.

2nd flight will be next week.

cheers

joe

Very nice web page and photos...The more I see this plane the more I NEED it......Looks like a perfect choice for my first true "Warbird"

Jeese, I can't belive I'm actually considering a warbird....never ever thought I would considering my style of flying...

AHHH, there's the rub....Ccccchange....I guess it happens to all of us sooner or later.

Great Pics!

I really enjoyed your photos of this beautiful bird - especially the inflight shots. Whoever took them has a very steady hand. A lot
of people out there don't realize how difficult it is to get a good,
clear shot of a relatively small object moving at that speed. Good
deal, Capt. G. Show me more.

Plane looks good, pictures are great. What camera are you using?
Haven't started mine yet, too many projects. Plan on using a YS-91 or a S.T.-90 with incowl muffler.
