xup..:)
..get a butterfly net to get it down with then :)...or a lassoo...good luck :) ...oh..theese things aint THAT brilliant if its windy....[:-]...are you planning to fly without the cowl..?....nervous ... i was ..& rightly so... they are so...so... different :) |
RE: u-can-do 60
Hey guys.........My second UCD is on the way with an OS 91 surpass four stroke this time around.
What size prop would you recommend? I got my radio back from Futaba and they found several problems that caused me to loose control of my last UCD. Range checks all the time for me now. |
RE: u-can-do 60
Nice..:) H...everbody seems to start of with something like an APC 15x6 with this chap ...seems O.K. to me..you might want to get a bit more Exotic later ..good luck with the new build ..;)

RE: u-can-do 60
Just got back from holiday, straight to the shop and getting the UCD ready for tomorrow. Would like to finish off my vacation with a day of flying. Now to find something to keep wifey occupied. Under 7 lbs......... interesting. Hope it works out, may want some low carb fuel. Later, Joe

RE: u-can-do 60
Joe , how is the 110 running? .....JW
|
RE: u-can-do 60
J Dubya, fantastic! Here it is 3:30 and I didn't get out yet. Anybody need a second wife? Break in is pretty much complete and I am interested to see how well it holds its carb settings. Before I went away, I was mixing the elevators to rudder for that sweet spot in knife edge. Slaved the elv. to rudder. More concerned with having to use rudder on landing and eliminating the way it dives down on application, but a smooth KE would be nice. Got to get out and burn some fuel. B-day party for the nieces, dosn't look good. Later, Joe

RE: u-can-do 60
Ok, after fighting this thing for a month we found the problem on my plane/engine.
The high speed needle had borken off inside the assembly and wouldnt allow me to make any real adjustments. I have been turning needles for the better part of a month and finally fter frustration my buddy and I took the unit apart to discover the problem. Cleared it out, replaced the needle and wa-lah!!! Engine runs like a top now, broken in with about 1/2 gallon fuel through it, very satisfied! This meant that TODAY I maidened the plane. Hands were shaking and was nervous but not scared [8D] Finalized all throws, made sure all linkages were secure and I was off! First flight was 5 min of laps while I trimmed it out, required 2 clicks right aileron and 1 click elevator. Flew great for a few laps then I started my madness. On my first real pass I tossed it straight up and attempted some waterfalls, did 3 no problem and it made me look better than I am ;) After several passes I started testing to see where it would hold a hover and am still finding the sweet spot. No guts yet for low stuff but ill get there soon. Held a hover for about 10 seconds and fell out of it. Made a pass and noticed the gear was starting to come loose, came around and landed for adjustment. Put some thread lcoker on the bolt and screwed it back on for no more problems. 2nd flight was more figure out what it can do and I find out what I knew all along thanks to you guys. Darn thing is going to require 3-4 degrees right thrust, its very noticable and makes the plane not too fun to fly knowing it. I saw it when I tried med level hovers, plane has a bad tendency to got left. No matter, a few thrust plates and I will be ready for next week! Only got 2 flights then had to leave, I had a dinner appt with the little lady. The guys wanted more but I had to go so ill save it for next week. When they found out why I had to leave one murmured "women..sheesh.." lol  Can somone refesh my memory and tell me which Ernst thrust plates to purchase? During the 2nd flight my canopy shook loose and came off, as soon as it did it made the plane fly really weird, landed, fixed all well again! I plan on 3-4 degrees of right thrust and I think I will fine. Here is my setup for those interested Engine- Saito 100 Servo's Futaba 9202's all over except the rudder that has a Hitec 5645mg Battery- 1700mah nicad CG- 5" from the le Think 5 was a little far for a maiden but the plane felt fine to me, ill get this thing to harrier yet!!! Working on flat spins but not sure if the airframe can do it. Other than that the plane is fun, it really is a floater! The guys were amazed how slow I could fly it. It can practically crawl and was landing slower the newbies who were on the trainers today. Cool stuff! thanks to all who contributed ideas and info. Great thread, great people!! Matt |
RE: u-can-do 60
Matt..:)..nice one ...congrats;)...:)give her $10 ..shooo her off to Mc D's...:)

RE: u-can-do 60
LOL thanks dave! I coudlnt possibly shoo her off, spent the whole wekend with my mates at the club etc so I was overdue for some "us" time with her, albeit much to the shigrin of my single friends but they will learn sooner or later ;)
Noticed the UCANDO cant knife edge for a hoot [:@] Horrible rudder action, very dissapointed! Will have to work in Joe's rudder mods, I've seen trainers do better KE's than this thing, horrible if you ask me [&o] |
RE: u-can-do 60
Way to go Matt.......:D Congratulations!!!! I know you have to be on top of the world. Nothing better than getting that maiden flight behind you.
Guys, I have been really swamped with our annual Big Bird event. I was the Asst. CD for the event this year. Man, this is a full time job with so much required. We had a great turn out with 80 registered pilots. Here is a link to see some of the photos. More to come as we get them in and posted. We had several guys taking photos. I took the photos in Group-1. I flew my Pitts and Extra and all went well. My Pitts won best in class for the ARF category. This was a first for me. :D Here is the link if interested. You know what I need now? I need to get the UCD out and just go fly for the pure joy of flying. http://www.rocketcityrc.com/events/2...rd/photos.html |
RE: u-can-do 60
thanks for the kind words Roger!! Loks like you guys had a nice event. I found out too late but wanted to head for Warbirds over Deleware this past weekend. Nice pics and thanks for sharing.
Guys just FYI my personal site now has a forum with a little R/C section. Feel free to register and join for some serious off topic chat if you want ;) Figure we can take it there and have some fun and not have to talk R/C if we want ;) www.HideinMy.com Im guessing this fine southern gentlemen is non other than our very own rfw1953 :D Nice pic of dad and his 2 babies! :) http://www.rocketcityrc.com/events/2.../L_GP10017.jpg |
RE: u-can-do 60
[8D] Yep, thats me before I got all hot and sweaty and had tools, fuel cans and smoke oil all over the place. We had a fun time and the weather was terrific, but a bit hot. At least the winds were light and down the runway with no rain for the event. I think everyone had a great time. You guys are going to have to plan this one for next year, We are planning the third weekend in July for 2005. Maybe LL can come so we can call it an International Event in Alabama. Now that would be a first. [8D]

RE: u-can-do 60
ORIGINAL: DiabloKid ill get this thing to harrier yet!!! On a side note, I posted somewhere in these threads some mixing options to dramatically help with knife edge flight. With the mix on my 9C my UCD actually does a pretty good knife edge. If you have a comparable radio you might want to have a look for it. |
RE: u-can-do 60
On the rudder mod, the one thing it eliminated was the way it drops the opposite wing, which is a plus and one characteristic that will not have to be mixed out. The elevator to rudder is a must on a mix for KE. I'm in the process of finalizing that now. Knife edge or not, I'm finding that the mix is required if you ever need to apply rudder on landing. Those same nasty habits in the air can be disasterous on a cross wind landing. One curious aspect of the right thrust is that when running the Saito 100 with 4 degrees it still needed more, yet with the YS 110 and the same 4 degrees, it tracks uplines as straight as a pin. Joe

Joe - we actually had a very bad crosswind and landing was a show to watch all day. I made the mistake of correcting with rudder to attempt a crab on final and whoa nelly!!! Made a go around and just came in at a steeper angle to the runway to compensate and finally made it in. |
RE: u-can-do 60
Matt, as gently as this thing lands, it can be a real challange in a cross wind. The mod on the rudder, with its reduced area, has less for the wind to catch, but is still a handfull. To get a good idea of what you are up against, in level flight, up high, apply rudder and observe how it reacts. Now imagine that, three feet of the deck, on landing, when your not expecting that dive to the wheels. The mix is easy, but I'm on a JR, so Coo should be able to talk you through it. Also your percentages might be different as to how your linkage ratio is set. Start with 10% and try it up high untill you find your combo.
Roger, looks like a successful event. Great pics of some beautiful planes. Joe |
RE: u-can-do 60
does anyone know if this thing requires down thrust? Mine had a tendancy to pull back and over while in hover
|
RE: u-can-do 60
ORIGINAL: DiabloKid does anyone know if this thing requires down thrust? Mine had a tendancy to pull back and over while in hover Matt, is your cowl installed? It has a tendency to fly dirty with it off and my experience was that the heat exhaust tunnel/ramp acted like an airfoil. Do several uplines and that will indicate as to what thrust angle it needs. Also, when it falls on its back slightly, you are near the sweet spot for a good hang. In a hover mine favors the canopy. Joe |
RE: u-can-do 60
Yes Joe in a hover it does favor the canopy badly, almost wants to fall over it seems like.

RE: u-can-do 60
Coomarlin - I now have a Futaba 9C and all this mixing is new to me, nice radio and I have the basics down though. It requires using 2 mixes that are linked to the same switch "D" in my case. PMIX5 Rudder->Aileron Rate (left)+15% (right)+15% Offset 0% Master = rudder slave=aileron link=on trim=off sw=d posi=down PMIX7 Rudd->Elev POS 1 = -11% POS 2 = -6% POS 3 = -0% POS 4 = -6% POS 5 = -11% Mas=Rudd Slav=Elev SW=D Posi=down |
RE: u-can-do 60
Matt, is the cowl on or off? Joe
|
RE: u-can-do 60
Joe I spent a few months flying my UCD without the cowl and I never really noticed that it flew that much differently. Maybe a little do to the CG being a bit different. Mine still flew good and I was quite happy either way, I bought a new cowl really for asthetics. Maybe I never really noticed that much difference because my CG was back substantially further than yours. I don't know.
|
RE: u-can-do 60
Coo, with the first three models I never flew with it off. On the fourth I didn't want the hassle of removing it for adjustments and decided to leave it off for the initial setup. That is when I noticed the difference. I guess realizing how it flew with it on is what keyed me to the difference when it was off. Joe
|
RE: u-can-do 60
Joe cowl is off so I could access the needles in this early stage of this plane/engine's life. Got the ernt's on route from Tower, once they arrive ill throw in 4-5 degreees and put the cowl on.
Coo thnx for the info, here is a stupid newbie question for ya..Once I assign the mix do I leave it "on" all the time? or just when I want to go into a ke? matt |
RE: u-can-do 60
Matt that is something you'll just have to decide for yourself. In my case I leave it off most of the time when I'm hovering and doing spins. But there are certain times I like to turn it on. Definately during KE flight, but as Joe suggested it works well when attempting a crosswind landing.
