ESM 57' extra
Just got my ESM extra the other day and it has to be the best plane that i have bought so far, quality of the wood is exelent, and it is very strong yet very light. The colour match for the cowl is spot on and the pin stripping is in a straight line to the fuse.Landing gear looks to be powder coated alloy, very strong yet some flex.cant wait to get my os 50 to go in it.Crosses fingers that LHS has it in stock..
currently running a black horse extra witch has had a hard life and was after something with a bit more quality to it, and so far all signs look good.. Any one have an ESM model or a 300L extra care to make any coments about the way they fly or any building problems that i might have. As the manual is pretty sad but the black horse one was no better. Any way i'll post the build up pics as i go and as the maiden comes closer ill let you know how she flys.. |

Build is comming along nicely, but the cut outs at the tail for the stab needed to the filed abit to get the stab level with the wing.It wasnt much but enough to need for it to be done..
The second shot is of a 1litre bottle of car wash to weigh down the high side as the 30minute dryed.. The wing went together with just a ply dieheadral brace and epoxy..There was no holes in the wing for the sero wires to come out so they need to be drilled and for the wing mount, there was no holes in the wing but the mount for it in the fuse was already drilled and blind nutted. So i had to fit the screws to the blind nuts form underneath the mount so they stuck out and mounted the wing and pushed down on the screws to make a dent in the wing so i knew where to drill for it to line up.. |

Lookin' Good !

RE: ESM 57' extra
Any of you got the ESM website? The plane looks nice. Very nice ...
|
RE: ESM 57' extra
tIANci the web site is http://www.eversoaringmodel.com/
Not alot on there but i realy love the build of this extra..Where it has been sheeted its not your normal 1.5mm sheeting it feels more like 3mm sheeting it feels that solid, and it still is light. |

Ok, time for some more pics as the landing gear is done and the rudder and elevators are installed..The halves of the elevator are joined by a peice of wire that you bend into a U shape and fit behind the stab befor glueing. This is what makes the elevators work together as they only work off the one push rod.
The tail wheel is a simple afair, as it has a long bit of wire on top that you need to bend, so you can push it in the hole you drill in the rudder and screwed to the bottom of the fuse. Did i say that i love this plane.. :D Next up is to make up the push rods for the rudder and elevator. Its a peice of dowel that you drill and fit wire to each end and epoxy to finish the rods. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
Lookin good.
When's the maiden flight ? I can bring a video camera to film the second flight if you want, then post it up to my webspace and link to here ? I even have a mini wireless camera we can put on the plane [8D] Ive been told before NOT to video anyones maiden flight as its bad luck ? Im trying for saturday off work to hopefully catch Steve G at the field. If he's not there I might just have to bite the bullet and fly it anyway. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
Ive got all the little fiddly stuff to do now, like the push rods and horns, i still have to come up with a way to hold the tank in and make up a velco holder for tha bat and radio..I drilled the dowel for the push rods last night and cut the grooves for the wire to fit in,but to much work on atmo and to stuffed to do much more.[:o]
I need to get to the LHS to get some blind nuts to install the motor mount as the kit didnt seam to come with any..Plus i need some more fuel line. Filming a flight would be cool, but i think this one is going to be a little way off yet from its first flight. Like to get some more knife edge practice low to the ground with my BH extra before i try with the newie... |
RE: ESM 57' extra
Vortec,
What size blind nuts ? If they're M4, I just bought a pack of ten and need only one or two right now. The LHS doesnt sell M4 bolts though, he says you can get em at hardware stores so I bought some from Barlows in Ballina today. Ill send you a PM with my mobile number. |

Went for a diferent way of fitting the wing belly pan..In sted of epoxying it to the wing ive made it removable by putting 2 paddle pop sticks on the front of the BP and slotted the fuse for them to fit into when the wing has been mounted.. On the wing mount ive added some triangle stock for the rear of the BP to be screwed to once it has been pushed in to the slots at the front..
Also an old 46fx being mocked up to get the motor mount fitted as it has the same size mounts as the 50SX that will be going into it. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
Damb windows re-install has taken up to much of my time and not enough time spent getting the extra ready for this weekend.
Wing is now finished with servos installed and linked to the surfaces, just need to strip my old extra of the 50SX and remaining radio gear and fit to the new one.. Fitting the push rods for the rudder and elevator is going to be a tight fit as the hole in the radio compartment to the tail is very small and there are no exit holes in the tail for them to exit so i'll have to drill my own holes and hope that i dont hit a former or somthing else of importance. Getting very itchy fingers with this one but i cant see it getting into the air till sunday..Hope the weather is going to play nice as its comming towards winter here and the wind is picking up abit. |

Ok some more pics. Engine is fitted up and mounted 90' insted of the 30' from vertical as stated in the manual..It was that way so a bigger std pipe would fit in the cowl or atleast down the centre..
Aileron servos are screwed to the balsa bocks that are epoxied to the wing cover.A little bit of wood had to come off the inside of the wing for the servo not to rub against, but other than that its your normal wing fit out. Here is the ESM extra up against a Blackhorse extra. Sizes are pretty much the same but the BH has a higher rudder, but the ESM makes up for that in area with alot more length to it.Stabs are the same size but like the rudder the elevators offer more area. In the middle of the radio fit out next and to fit the push rods to there homes.Anyway enjoy, hope to have it flying this sunday as i have nothing to fly otherwise.. :) |
RE: ESM 57' extra
Lookin good Vortec. Really good.
What are you going to do with the Blackhorse Extra now ? Buy some more servos and put it back together with the 46 in it for a backup Id guess ? I hope the maiden flight goes well, I doubt Ill be able to make it to the field this sunday. Next Tuesday looks like the earliest for me to get airborne again, with the 50SX in the trainer, woo hoo. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
I think it'll hang on the wall for a while till i get a new radio.Or i crash the new one.[:@]
It might come back down as im having a few problems with fitting the tank, the motor mount bolts are to long and stick through the fire wall to far and i cant push the tank in the hole as it hits the bolts.I need to get some that fit flush with the back of the fire wall for the tank to fit.( and that is going to be fun) Also the push rods are giving me hell, as the back of the fuse is so small and to get the rods down the other end with out hitting each other is a pain. I cant bend them as it will make them flex. Next problemis the throttle push rod as it doesnt have a guide to go through the firewall, i'll have to get some at the LHS tomorrow. |

Ok next problem ive encounted is that when i fitted the blind nuts to fit the motor mount it lifted the top of the fire wall box.I didnt notice this till ii removed the long bolts for the mount witch was acting like a clamp on it and when released it opend up..Abit of 30 min fixed that and 3/4" bolts fixed the tank fitting prob..Wish i grabed the shorter bolts to start with.Oh well ill learn the hard way.
I've fitted the elevator push rod but there realy isnt enough room for another big pushrod to fit down there s i went to the LHS today and got myself two packs of sulavan goldn-cable to make the rudder a push pull set up.Will save me some weight in the tail. Anyway, back to it.Tomorrow is comming fast,i dont think ill make it. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
Sorry to hear you've had drama setting it all up. Im sure you know but make sure you secure the golden rods in the fuse in a few places so they dont flex.
As I said before I wont make to the field tomorrow, but did make it this afternoon for a few flights. Had my first deadstick landing, no damage to your plane, just had to carry it rather than taxi back to pits, turns out my glo plug died, I didnt have another on hand but Scott loaned me one to finish my last tank of fuel. OS50SX goes in the trainer tonight/tomorrow, probably fly it on Monday or Tuesday afternoon. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
It is a pain but im getting there. cables are in and clevisis soldered on the rudder end. Just need to do the servo end and that will be them out of the way.

Ok she'll be ready for tomorow,or today should i say.Once the push rods were done it was a breeze to finish it off.
The receiver and bat still need to be rapted up in foam but thats a quickie. Control throws will be done in the morning, as will the CG.This plane feels a bit lighter than the Blackhorse extra i have so it will be good to get it on the scales to find out by how much. Glad i went with the pull-pull setup on he rudder as it is super light weight, but also works alot better than the push rod setup that the manual wants you to put in. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
The big day has come. :D Gota love a new plane day, and couldnt of asked for better weather, suny with a very light breeze.
I only have about 1/2 - 3/4 of a litre of fuel tho.Thats going to limit me to about 3 flights witch sucks big time. Hopefully ill have a good report for you guys. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
I hope the lack of flight report by now isnt a bad sign ? [:o]
My OS50SX ran this afternoon, first flip straight out of the box, ran 2 complete tanks following the run in procedure of rich 4 stroking to 2 stroking and back in 10 sec cycles, too easy. |

WOW...What a plane.:D This thing flys awsome, words just do it enough..
After all the club members stoped looking at it and asking questions it was time to put her out on the grass to get some last minute photos then it was time to fill er up. The control throws i put in were 15mm for the ailrons, manual was 10mm.Elevator was 18 from 12mm and rudder was all i could get wich was about 45' and the manual only wanted 15mm. On firering it up the needle was set to give full power now the 50SX has had 7 tanks through it.On the taxi out to the strip the ground is abit rough but the plane handled it with ez.On the line up at the end of the strip all controls were checked again and then the power was fed on and she took off down the strip like a rocket, tracked dead straight and at 15m she lifted off and needed 4clicks of down and 3 of right on the ailerons and that was it to get level flight. After two circuts i tryed to roll and it is very fast and rolls on its axis, slow rolls are just the same just slow, there was no roll out at the top of loops and stall turns are the best ive ever done(maybe the huge throw on the rudder:)). About 5mins in i got up high and slowed it down to a landing speed to see if it would tip stall but it just putted along happly and just kept flying.First landing was a 2 in one afair as i put to much elevator in to flair and it took off again and ended up rolling into the long grass on the side of the strip and fliped at slow speed. No damage but one of the wheel pants split where the two halfs are joined at the front but a bit of CA will fix that. Plane flys great,i flew it mosty at 1/2 throttle with a 11x6 to get the feel of it as its realy fast with full throttle and it doesnt take long to be down the other end of the feild.Vertical is awsome,Snap rolls are beutifull, the only thing i didnt try was inverted but im sure it will be able to do it with no fuss.. I'm one very happy chappy, and the 2.30am finish this morning to get it ready for today was worth it.Exelent plane.:D |
RE: ESM 57' extra
Excellant. Sounds like you enjoy the new plane huh !
I cant wait to see it flying, hopefully Ill get a chance to get to the field one day when you're there. Im working on changing my days off to include at least Sundays. |
RE: ESM 57' extra
yeah she's sweet.I went out after lunch on suday as had a bit of a headache in the morning :)It doesnt realy mater to me which day i go,it just depends if i need something at the HS.By the way he has in the 12.25 props.I'd like to try a 12x6 on it as the 50SX revs farly hard with the 11x6.Just what it needs, some more speed.:)
