World Spitfire engine choice?
 
I just got my 1/7 scale Spitfire from World today. This plane looks excellent, and was packaged with great care. I just can't say enough about it. Now I'm deliberating what engine to put in it. I read a review on this plane a while back in Model Airplane News, I believe it was. A 70 4c is recommended for it, and they used an OS 70 in the article, but had to add 6 oz of weight to the nose. So I say why not make use of that extra weight and go bigger. I've been considering an OS 91, anybody have any thoughts or suggestions?

I have the P-39 which is almost the same except for flaps. I have a saito 100 on mine and it flies great. Don't go any smaller than the 91. Also mine balanced fine. Good luck

Don'y be afraid of overpowering these .40 size planes. I run 90s in some of mine and a Saito 100 in the P 51. Just make sure you ad a bit of strength around the firewall like epoxy and some on the retract mounts.

I have a saito 100 with an APC 14x8 prop and balanced with no extra weight needed. Plenty of power.

Ditto here. Saito 1.00 with 14x8. Balanced out nicely.

My buddy have one with an OS 91 pumper, and it flies great and fast. I had one with a YS 110FZ spinning a 15x8 prop, and it was a rocket.

Thanks guys, the Saito 100 was my first choice, but I thought it was aweful light. Now that I know it will work out just fine, I will stick to the original plan. Now I just have to figure out if I want to start this one, or my Fokker DVII next, which will also be getting a Saito. By the way, I got a chance to look over the Spit real good last night, and I noticed the surfaces didn't seem to travel all that far.

I had the same feeling on my ailerions but they worked just fine.

One minor problem here with the Saito 100 in this size plane which I am expericencing and that is the torque and alot of it. I have countless sizes of two strokes from 46-3500 . We have here a honking engine on a very light (but re-enforced) frame. I have the idle so low its about to quit and the plane is still rolling forward. Make sure you get the CG right on.

we are building a marutaka 60 scale spit , and want to know why there is a 3 degree offset in the engine mountings , asper the plan, is it for prop torque comphensation or what ?

The answer is YES. Most warbirds have some right thrust and down thrust built into the firewall.

thanks richard, would you suggest to use the origional hardwood mounts or convert to the manufactured engine mounts , in which case do you shim to allow for this , also if we want to install flaps on this model,can we multi task the alerons to this task or would you install seperate flaps , the radio has a heap of available channels jrx10

Mine definitely had this problem. I ended up shipping WM the stab/elevator for replacement. Even after flexing the elevator a couple hundred times I could only get about half of the recommended travel out of it. They replaced it without a problem but it's always a hassle shipping a part back and waiting for the new one.

Pavement or grass? I fly off grass with the idle of my 1.00 about 2200 - 2300 rpm,s and it doesn't roll. You really don't need an ultra low idle on most warbirds as you are usually gonna come in with a little power. Chopping the throttle too quickly with a super low idle can be disastrous, especially if it's a little breezy.

"Asphalt". I guess it would be fine on grass.

Most of Worlds (I have 4) have right thrust built into the front end.

If you use separate aileron servos, you can set up "flaperons". You really should not be shimming the engine mount angles since it is already built in. Just mount the engine flush against the firewall.

I had a Super Tiger 90 in mine, inverted with stock OS style muffler and it hauled butt...
These plane takes a bunch of nose weight so use horse power instead of lead.
My friend fly's one with a 61 two stroke and more than satisfactory.
The landing gear works great for an ARF and you need to use a good retract servo, the only thing that I and everyone else hates about the plane is that damn ugly canopy.

P.S. This plane is a vertual copy of the Top Flite Gold Edition Spitfire.
