WM Extra 300 160

Can anyone here tell me if any thread has been set up on this plane ... I searched but could not find anything of real substance. Anyone got any comments about this plane? I just got one and would like to know about building it, engine choice and how she flies. Thanks!

I have this model with the 160 FX. Here are a couple links to threads that may help.

Both links report on the assembly experience I had and the maiden flight report. Just don't put a third servo in the tail as I did. This caused mine to be tail heavy. Very nice model. Easy to assemble and flies nicely with the 160, though not a 3-D animal. If you are looking for 3-D put a DA-50 on the nose. The airframe can easily handle this engine. I have seen the same airplane fly with a DA-50 and was very impressed. If you want scale aerobatics the 160FX is a fine match. Just use large fuel tubing with a large clunk, and large brass tubing in the tank. Keep the tank as close to the needle valve as possible and not on the CG, or you will need a pump.

Flies very smoothly with the 160. Tracks straight as an arrow on take off. Is a baby in a stall, falling straight forward without dropping a wing edge. With this engine this airplane will perform very nice scale aerobatics with authority. Not a T'roller or one to hover with this power. Very gentle and easy to land. Set it up and then flare at the desired touchdown point. Slows easily and doesn't want to soar on you. Not a snapper at slow speeds, but you don't want to float it down. Best wheel pants and cowling I have seen in any arf kit. Excellent covering job that sticks well. Nice canopy and cockpit cover with good easy access inside. You will be pleased with this one. Enjoy.

Roger ... appreciate your assistance, I am not into 3D and will power her with a MVVS 35 cc gasser, glow consumption is just a little too much for my liking. :)

Hi tIANci......this is truly a nice plane. Looks good in the air also and does anything you ask it.
The MVVS 35 is a good engine for this plane......I have a Fuji in mine and it flies great with that engine. Just build according to the manual and you will be fine. Check your CG....set 40% and 70% for lo and hi rates and you will be fine. Take off with lo rates :)) and turn her into a beast in the air with the hi rates.
Cheers.

tIANci - One thing to mention. When assembling the horizontal stab I used epoxy with the two bolts to secure it. I didn't like the idea of using the bolts alone. Seems like a potential failure point. Also, think about access to the wing bolts when installing the throttle servo. I installed the throttle servo over the wing bolt, which made it more challenging to access. I should have positioned the throttle servo more aft of the wing bolt for better access.

The only problem I noticed after assembly was that vibration caused the metric screws securing the canopy to easily vibrate loose. I replaced the metric blind nuts with standard 440 blind nuts and then inserted a piece of fuel tubing into the mounting holes to the canopy. Then placed a nylon washer between two socket head 440 machine screws and the fuse. This solved the vibration problem. You can keep the metric if this is the standard where you live, which is fine, and simply add the fuel tubing with the nylon washers.

Watch assembling the wheel pants with the decorative coverings. The directions aren't very clear. I messed up the firsts set and had to reorder. Check to be sure you have the left and the right decorative coverings positioned accurately. There is a difference. I had to grind away the cowling a bit on the lower sides at the end of the cowling to clear the LG. You can see this in the Picture below.

Other than the above, the assembly was pretty simple. Good luck and have fun. You will really like this airplane. It looks great and flies just as good as it looks.

Roger ... a question ... how do you think the plane would fair with a 26cc gasser instead of a 35cc ... I am not into 3D etc, just your basic IMAC will be fine by me. Thanks for all the advice.

Even after considering your flying preferences I don't think I would want to go any smaller than 35cc. I honestly question even this, but then Kaz felt it would fine. I'm not at all familiar with MVVS engines so, so I can only give an very basic opinion. I did have a Fuji once which ran very well, but was a bit hard to flip start. I ended up purchasing a high torque starter and everything was fine. I have a DA-50 on a Pitts Bipe and really like this engine. I'm not really into 3-D that much myself, but do like to have extra power when I want it, or needed it. My first choice would be the DA-50, but it's a bit pricey. I think I would also look at Brison which is better priced than the MVVS from what I can tell. A friend of mine has the Brison 52cc and he really likes his. You can get a Brison 39 cc engine for 375.00 US and a 52 cc engine for 450.00 US. I think the 35 CC MVVS is in the 449.00 range from what I can tell. Here is a link for their website. http://brisonrcengines.com/engines.htm

ZDZ makes a good engine as well. You can get a 52 cc for 549.00 Here is the site link for Chief Aircraft if you don't have it. http://www.chiefaircraft.com/cgi-bin...s/ZDZ/ZDZ.html

I honestly wouldn't go as low as a 26cc engine for this airplane. I would stay at least around 39 cc and up as a matter of personal preference. Then again, my first choice would be the DA-50. Hope this has helped and good luck.
