Phoenix Giles 202
 

I have a Phoenix Giles 202 on the way from Tower and I am putting an MDS .58 engine in her,the muffler seems very large and it seems that the engine will be mounted at a 45 degree angle which will put the muffler out the bottom of the cowl in the center,does anyone have a 58 in theirs,Im just hoping this muffler will fit.[:o]
I probably could go with a pitts style muffler and turn the engine 45 degrees but I hope I will be able to avoid the extra money and work.:eek:

Got my Giles the other day and WOW it really looks nice..the blue is a metalic,the pictures on the net and box do not give it justice!
Covering is tighter than bark on a tree!:D
I have the wing put together,first problem was that they glued the servo blocks on the wrong side of the wing servo mount.it was an easy fix though.;)

Here is how I mounted my MDS .58..took the factory installed engine mount off, plugged the holes and redrilled for a Dave Brown
#60FS-6004 mount which fit perfect.
Insted of the 45 degree mount I have it @ 90 degrees as you can see, I will mount a Pitts muffler on.

P40 ... looks like you answered the whole thing by yourself! I have a friend who mounted the engine at 135deg ... the muffler was about to touch the bottom part of the firewall, he was unable to attach a deflector. A side winder installation is fine with a standard muffler. Pitts muffler is the way to go for this baby. She flies nice ... very nice.

One question ... I have seen many of your posts ... how many planes do you have??!! :)

I have 2 P-40 Warhawks,540 Edge,Cap 232,Funstar 3d, and this Giles 202, I did have..:D another P-40,Staudacher 300,2 trainers,
Cap 232, funstar 3d, crashed them all.[:o]
Most off the crashes lately are from just getting to wild!:)

Ran into another problem...whoever makes the instructions for this plane CAN'T MEASURE!!!!!!!!!![:@]
DO NOT go by the lengths for the pushrods per the instructions,you will come up 3 inches short on the rudder pushrod!
Nothing makes me more upset as having to make pushrods ALL over again,Kyosho pulled this on me on one of their models![:@][:@]
Other than the two problems I mentioned, the plane went together nicely.:D

P 40 thanks for you ideas on this model I got my a week a go and i been found some problems I hope you can help me
How you hold the tank inside and how you make the pushrod that go to the trothle when you put the engine on 90 degress

I have the tank just braced up with foam rubber and I have the servo tray screwed down insted of glued because you can't get the tank out if you ever need to with the servo tray in.
As far as the pushrod for the throttle,just drilled the hole in the firewall and ran the rod back to the servo on the same side as the throttle arm on the engine.(use the thin wire and plastic tube they give you):D
I also put the battery pack under the fuel tank.:eek:

P-40Luvar,

I want to know, whether Giles 202 flying is different from Extra, Edge and Cap. What are its pros & cons compared to other aerobatic planes?

I can't tell you that right now I have not flown my Giles yet.:eek:
I expect it to be close to the way the others fly for the simple fact the airframe and wings are a close match.
The giles has the tapered wing like the others but there is one difference I see,it has a swept back wing like a jet.

The only reason I used the different engine mount was because of the larger engine.
If you are using a 46-52 size engine the original mount will probably work,I just couldn't get the crankcase of the MDS 58 to fit into the metal mount the kit came with.
I think most any mount will work,just make sure that the rails are as long as the original because if not you might have issues with
the cowl fitting,in other words if the rails are to short the engine is going to sit back to far and the cowl will not fit.

You might want to try a 11X6 wood prop or a 11X7 APC I think either one will work ok.

Im useing a 12X6 wood prop with my MDS .58 getting about 12,500 RPM.

Free...I usually fly my planes when the "newness" go's away,right now im having a ball flying the H9 Cap 232!
As soon as I either get tired of flying this plane or it takes a dirt nap I will break out the Giles.[sm=lol.gif]

I have been flying my Giles for almost a year now, and I really like it. It grooves pretty good with my OS 70 II in it. Has great vertical, and is a very agile plane. It has heavy wing loading for a 40 size plane, but as long as you are on the throttle you don't notice it too much. Although it does have a tendancy to high speed stall on occasion. Just don't pull to hard out of the downlines [X(]. I payed $ 74 and change for this plane, and considering the way it flys, I think I got a GREAT deal!

P 40 is me again I just finished my Giles. But now I have one more problem and I got CRAZY already triyin to fixit looks like is tail heavy I alredy put the battery under the fuel tank and nothing happen I put some weigth at the firewall and same thing any ideas please ??????????????????[:@][:@][:@][:@]

Mine balanced out with no weight added,take in mind the MDS 58 im running is almost 20 0z,I don't know which engine you are using?
Remember to balance the plane UPSIDE DOWN and measure the CG @ the FUSELAGE(not wingtips) 105mm(4 3/8 in.) back from the leading edge(front part of the wing).

That means you can balance the plane with 12mm either forwrd the 105mm or behind the 105mm and still be within a safe flying CG.
