Dp Ultimate 40 First Flights
Here it is sports fans,
First flights Ultimate-40 : 1) No drag like big-bro!speeds at half throttle! 2) Lands like big-bro! Oh so soft! 3) Rips a snap and stops on low side! 4) Pancake Inverted flat spins! 5) Will 3D!!! (had doubts). 6) Unlimited verticle @ 5lb 10oz dry! YS-63 inverted w/ MACS 90 degree adaptor 7.5" flex-pipe. APC 12x7 w/ Tru-Turn 21/4" jet spinner. Fut 9404 on ELE and RUD. JR 3421 on AIL. Fut 3003 on THR. 700Mah NICD (up front). 7) Rudder has lots of roll coupling on the knife! mix or fly it out! 8) Tracks a path extermely well horizontal and verticle. 9) Good looking airplane! 10) Balanced at 3/4" CG per inst. No weight added!!! 11) Direct sunlight melted the canopy!!!!!!!! 12) Supplied metric hardware actually worked well!!!!!!!!!!!! FUN AIRPLANE! IT'S A KEEPER! |

Sounds great!
Did you make any other modifications to the kit? Can anything be done concerning the canopy? Terry |

Only mod was to side mount elevator servo under canopy
for better pull pull geometry and mount throttle servo just ahead of stock location for balance. Rudder servo then can be centered in stock location for best geometry. I guess shade will have to protect canopy on bright hot days. I tried to reheat but only worsened condition. A new one is 12 bucks & shipping. Polycarb plastic would have been a better choice for canopy. It looks like and melts like byutelene. |
Elevator setup
Ysman,
Would you post a picture of your pull pull setup. In particular your elevator installation. Thanks, Jim |

Jim,
Iwould be happy to. I have a friend with a digital camera and it might take a couple of days for me to get it. Iam trying to upload some quick cam shots for now. |

YSman,
Thanks for the pic. When you said under the canopy you meant it. I thought maybe you had rigged up something under the cockpit floor. That is a good idea. I am thinking of putting the servo under the cockpit floor in the main body tube. In that way I would still have room for my pilot, Tigger ... |

Still trying to upload. Took some good shots of pull pull arrangements but the file size way exceeds the 80K limit. Please be patient. This is becoming frustrating. How are you other guys getting huge pictures on your posts? |

Sent about 10 pic's your way!
Thanks for the help. I am relocating the battery and putting 1.5 degrees additional down thrust on the engine. The plane wants to roll on its back hard during a hover. ysman |

What kind of cables are those that you're using?
|
Dp Ultimate 40 First Flights
The control cable is double spun kevlar. It is
extremely strong and wont conduct emf. You should find it or be able to order at the hobby shop. To attach it you simlpy tie a knot and apply thin CA. The shrink wrap simply hides the knots. visioneer_one : Thanks for the help in posting my pic's. ysman |

ysman,
I see you used clevis on both ends...what brand pull-pull clevis/eye worked well here? I looked at Dubro 2-56 pull-pull but the hole looked rather small on the eye and didn't seem as if I could thread 2 wires through it for the elevator servo. |
Dp Ultimate 40 First Flights
The clevis assemblies that came with the kit are used
on the servo. I used Sullivan clevises/eyes for the control horns. Adjustment is made at the servo clevis. The control horn clevis/eye is CA'd to prevent turn out. I thought the supplied pull pull clevises were really nice! Just not enough of them. I am not particular to the described installation method in the instructions. It is sound but I perfer to make adjustments at the servo in order to keep geometry as true as possible. I also did not like the mechanics described in the installation of the aileron control. I think it limited throw volume way to much. ysman |

YSMAN,
I might have to look at the sullivans or resort to wrapping around the servo horn as shown. The hitec horn I'm using is HUGE (big red one) so shouldn't be an issue of it making it's way through it. Question. what difference does it make if you shorten pull cable at servo arm or control horn? end result is the cable is shorter so don't see why that matters? As far as aileron the only thing I changed was not using 5/16" out from the center of the servo. I used a hole a bit further out to get more throw and changed aileron interconnect rods to 4-40 as many did here. Just have to wrap up the pull-pull and waiting on the motor to put in and it's ready to go. |

It is not completely a matter of tension adjustment.
It is more a matter of how strait the cable is when it exits the fuselage. Being the exit holes for the cable are closer to the control horn, it is reasonable to control the amount of deflection at the servo horn. Most modelers like to take advantage of full mechanical throw volumes and servo travel volume in order to set a greater envelope of control conditions. Also, crossing the rudder cable in the fuse allowed me to have near perfect alignment to the rudder horns. The elevator servo mod made also near perfect alignment . ysman |

I did the "YSMAN" mod on the elevator. Took some extra time but at least I know the geometry is correct and I just cut holes in the covering to get a straight path as the path was not in direct line with the hardwood on the fuse in front of the stab. I just did the rudder but noted the alignment was probably not perfect so I'll just turn my control horn around 180 degrees and see if that helps get it straighter.

So about the Kevlar Pull-Pull on the rudder. Crossing them is a really good idea to get the run as straight as possible. Are you worried about the two "Kevlar Strings" rubbing against each other where they cross?? (it looks like they're running out in the open) Just like anything else, I'd think the friction from them rubbing against each other would weaken them. Being it is only the rudder, you'ld probably not loose the plane if you lost control of that surface....So i guess it's not ultra-critical.
