This is a slighty modified WM SS 60.
Wing is stock as is fuse but I made a different rear end to hold up to the 180. Fuel is CP 180 heli: Prop is APC 16/10: Radio is JR with 2 Hitecs digital MG in wing. Needless to say it is a vertical rocket. |

Oh yes, I have the same plane, and am thinking about modifying the tail, especially the elevator. It seems that your elevator surface is thicker than the horizontal stab. I was considering doing a 2-piece elevator, and have rudder go down between elevators to the bottom. The provided elevator does seem thin, and I read it broke off on someone's SS 40. This is where those tails from the crashed planes come in handy. And yes, I reckon we need the serovs in the back to balance off the heavy engine.
I have an Enya 155 4 stroke, but I wasn't sure about the prop clearance for a large prop. So is 16" the largest prop you can put w/o scratching the prop? |

Mine is still running OK as a matter of fact I also have replaced the rudder with one similar to yours but rudder only and turned it into a tail dragger. And when am I going to get the chance to see yours fly Racapulico? Randy |

Hi Randy, you can fly it any ole time we are at the FF together which seems to be rare sencs I moved north but I am goig to start driving south more often. Hope to see you at the FF real soon...I have a jet that needs some airtime so I might be there on thurs. afternoon.

Nice to see all the Super Stunt bashers in one place. I just finished sheeting the top and bottom sections of the tail boom. The side sections are adequately strong in my estimation, but to be safe I CA'ed carbon fiber strips to the inside of the stringers and longerons to stiffenthem up. Even though I'm only putting a lowly Magnum 120FS in mine, I didn't think the rather open frame work is going to hold up. Plus I needed tail weight to compensate for the big engine up front, so it might as well be structural.
I also sheeted the bottom of the horizontal stab. That stiffened up the tail considerably. I'm leaning more and more toward epoxying the tail permanently in place - 3 little screws just doesn't seem strong enough for the job. You guys can get away with the trike gear and still clear the prop for a 1.80FS. Since I fly primarily off a grass field, I had no choice but to convert to taildragger, which I like better anyway. |

A 16in. prop was all I could get away with but it will do just fine with the 120 you are going to use. I did basically nothing to the fuse and it seems ok...time will tell though. Really a plane I enjoy because it is simple, cheap, and lots of fun.

Turn that sucker into a tail dragger and you might be able to get a larger prop on it. My TH .75 hauls mine around just fine, however once its all over with I might put a saito 100 or larger on it.

I'm getting antsy for flying so I hope its soon. I just returned from the Bomber field event and was hoping to fly Sunday, but the wind kept me grounded. So the next flyable day I plan on being at the field. Sounds like Wednesday and also maybe Thursday. I have accumulated a few planes since the last time you saw me. I now have the Aeroworks Edge 540T 60/90 with a Saito 100, the Ryan STA-M powered with an OS 120 FS and just got through purchasing the Model Tech Magic, fun fly. I had the H9 aristi but it met its fate a few months ago.
My SS60, I just converted it over to a tail dragger and have not had the chance to see how it flies yet. Are you planing on coming to the Bob Cortney big bird? Oh and I use popup killer *evil grin* never saw them. Randy |

I think a Saito 100 would have been a better choice. Even with 3 servos in the tail, sheeted horizontal stab, and major reinforment of the tail boom, my SS120 is still wayyy nose heavy. I'm running out of ideas of adding useful tail weight. I'll get a heavy tailwheel assembly and see if that will tilt the scale a little. If not, I may have to sheet the fuse sides and top of horizontal stab, too.

Balance
Volfy...the balance (c/g) they state in the instructions is way off. If memory serves it was at about 50%. I always balanve my planes @ 30-33%. It will and does fly at 50%....better check the c/g on yours. It is a real forgiving c/g type plane so I did the math and got the c/g where it should be. Now...I may be dead ass wrong at 33% but I have been doing this some 30 yrs. so I know how to get the c/g right on a plane. The reason I know it will fly at the c/g they state is because of the guy that owns the only other SS 60 is Blackie(Randy) from the post above these post and he and I have flown his .

Racopullco, thanks for the notes. Yes the recommended CG does look very aft compared to other planes I've flown. The new flaps and ailerons I'm building to replace the stock units are much wider and will add more than an inch to the wing cord, so I think the factory recommended location should work just fine for me.
I very often go way overboard with modifications to ARFs, and this one is no exception. But I do try to stick to the the CG location as stated in the manual, at least for the initial flights. It kinda puts some comfort level back into the plane after all the hacks I've done to it. :) |

OK flew mine for the first time Thursday, and its second time on Saturday, and I really like the way it flies since I converted over to a tail dragger, I mean it's a world of difference.
Wayne, you should really think about converting yours to a tail dragger it flies much better and even lands better I think. Randy |

Looks great, Randy. Where did you get your main gear? I remember you said it's composite, right? How do you like your Super Stunt "91"? :)

Can't remember what brand the main gear is, but its your typical fiberglass gear purchased at the local hobby shop. I also had to upgrade the wheels to 2 1/2" for clearance, it could use a taller gear. So far the OS 91FX has out preformed the TH 75 but not by much and only if and when the TH 75 was running at its best which was not often. For a year I flew this plane as a trike plane and was starting to bore me to the point that I almost sold it. I have to say that by converting it over to a tail dragger really made the difference I only which I had done it sooner :)

What propellers are you using for the OS 91? I am thinking of using Saito 72, which swings the APC 14x4W @ 10,000 rpm = 11.5 lb static thrust. Do you think it's enough? |

Seanychen, if you are thinking of putting a 4 stroke on the SS60 then the Satio 100 would be my choice with a 15 X 6.

Now, I'm not the type to overpower like mad (unlike some people around here ;)). In fact, I'm about the only one in RCU to be powering a H9 1/4 CAP232 with a 1.20 2stroke. Everybody else seem to consider an OS 1.60FX the minimum. The SS60 is a BIG airplane. The fact that the SS60's wing loading is so light means it'll fly with a .72 4stroke, but I doubt it'll be much fun. It'll probably fly like a big trainer. I think the Saito 100 would be an excellent choice for a 4stroke. It's very light weight, so you won't have balancing problems like I had to fight with, but it'll turn a 16x6 as fast as the ASP 1.20 fourstroke I'm putting in mine. Just my $0.02. |

I currently have a Saito 100 on my U-Can-Do 3D. I am really tempted to get another one fo the SS 60.
I have an Enya 155R 4 stroker, but I think it may be too heavy for the SS 60. Did your SS 60 come out nose heany w/ a 91 2 stroke? I may make it into a tail dragger to clear a 16x4W prop & for harrier landing. By the way, how does this plane harrier? I am also thinking of using larger elevator stocks, maybe also for aileron and flap. A LHS sells 2" wide, thin, tapered stock that I hope will work. |

Not really nose heavy, I believe it came out just about right but I did move the battery pack just inside the turrtle deck as I believe it gives this plane a bit more character, As far as doing harrier landings I believe it will with a bit of flaps.
