Phoenix Models Extra 300S - Question
 

I have an OS46fx sitting in a Tower Voyager and am thinking about moving it to the Extra 300S. In the description on the Tower Hobbies website, it says that the engine can be mounted rigth side up. I have done a search on this plane and the only posts with pics that I can find show the engine at 90 degrees or inverted. Can anyone out there confirm that the engine can be mounted upright? Before you say that moving from a Tower Voyager to an Extra is too big of a move, this is not my primary plane. In fact I have 6 planes, and am just not having fun flying the Voyager. It sets mostly on the shelf while I take the others out to the field. Will probably sell it at our club swap meet. I am just looking to upgrade the plane that I have the 46fx in.

I got the plane, and cannot for the life of me remember if it came with the mount installed already, but it's mounted 90*.

I also cannot remember if it is for a reason (perhaps to fit in the cowl better).

I'll be more assistance once I get home from work and take a look at it. I flew mine with a Supertiger G-51 2ST and it was real nice! Loving the Phoenix models! Easiest ARF ever to build. Comes with surfaces already CA'ed in, I got mine on Wed. and had it ready to fly for Sat morning.

Thanks crash, I would appreciate your checking. I doubt that the engine can be mounted cylinder up, but the website says so. I would like to mount the engine vertically, but in the pictures it just doesn't look like there would be enough clearance.

Here is a link to a post I made about the phoenix models extra 300s. I took a bunch of photos and included them. I'm guessing that you wouldn't be able to mount the engine upright without cutting the cowl up pretty bad. My engine mounts came pre-installed. If you have any other ?'s I'd be happy to help.

dkf1979 - Thanks for responding to my question, but I had already read through that thread. From what I can see, mounting the engine upright would look pretty ugly and you are right about having to cut the cowl up quite a bit. It just bugs me that tower indicates you can mount the engine upright. I just can't see an extra, edge, or other aerobatic planes with the cylinder head sticking up through the cowl. What were they thinking[X(]

You may not want to put the engine upright as the carborator may be to high for the tank. Mine is 90 and works fine no fuel problems.

It's even better when you get it scratch and dent for 91 bucks :) Even better then other ARFS as there is more done so you can have the thing in the air in NO TIME!

Sorry HookedonRC forgot to look last night. Went home and that friggin Spring bug got me cleaning........ sucks....

crash - don't worry bout it, from what I can tell, you can't mount the engine upright anyway. It's not hat I don't want to mount the engine inverted, I have two planes that have inverted ones already. I just prefer to invert 4 stroke engines. They seem to do much better than the 2 strokes inverted. Thanks for all the info though.

You may want to try the Global Magic Extra 300. They are supposed to be using monocote now, instead of that horrible oracover that started coming off after 50 or 60 flights. They are extremely light and you will definitely not get bored with it, with the FX .46 on it. Easy plane to see also, good colors. If you decide to go that route, send me an email and I'll provide some extra building pointers.

Hooker, I forgot to mention that the Magic Extra has the engine installed upright in open cowl cheeks, so you can service it easily. This plane is docile enough on low rates for a second or third airplane, but with a computer radio and extreme high rates, it will 3-D like crazy! Good luck.

Thanks Mike.... I have had the Magic Extra, and unless they have really changed the covering, it won't make it to my list. I did like flying the extra, but used bad judgement in a high speed 90 degree crosswind. To say that the plane was too light for the wind I was in is an understatement, but I still do have what is left of it...only the wing:D It was a joy to fly, but the covering was the down side.

Look at the Phoenix Sukhoi. Same dollars, better looking IMO, flies 100% better and is easier to see. I have had both planes and the SUK is a real performer. Good luck either way.

I just purchased the Phoenix Models Sukhoi SU-31 I am planning to use my OS 46FX in it. Can you pass along some of your experience???

What engine did you use?

What prop size/pitch did you use?

Any issues with the kit i should know about before I put this together?
