Ultrastick .80 update request
 

I have on order a Hanger 9 Ultrastick .60. In reading the post history I note some definate issues with wing attach dowels, wing bolt mount attachment, landing gear reinforcement, and need for tail servos with most 2 cycle motors. Alot of these issues seemed to be back circa 2003. I'd like to get some input on people who have built the plane in the last year or so. Have any of these issues been corrected or should I start getting the stuff to mod them now?

Hey there....I just built one two months ago ...ordered from horizon....I did beef up the landing gear with some tri stock ...I also used a sullivan tail wheel ...I really was'nt impressed with how they wanted you to mount... I fuel proffed the tank compartment..and installed a dubro 16oz tank..i would have to say it's me fav to fly at the moment...love the big four stroke!

Hey, I'll definately agree about the puck. Went to Yost Arena (U of M Ann Arbor) last fri to watch some Red Wings (Lidstrom, Hatcher, Wolly, Legase and some other NFL player play a benefit. It was essentially pick up pond hockey. But hey, a hockey fix was needed.

I've had my US60 for almost 6 months now and the only modification I made was a larger 15oz. tank. A Saito .82 hangs on the nose and no tail weight was required to balance. More than enough power for this plane. Had to move 2 blind nuts on firewall to make the smaller .82 fit, but that was no big deal.

I really like Storkeman's US with the .82 on it. I'll bet it flys just as good as my OS .91 plus he didn't have to move the servo's to the rear like I did. If I were buying a new one thats what I would do.

Sorry It was Skorman's I was talking about. If you build an Ultra Stick and keep it light it will have the best slow flight performance. I added some stock and glassed my landing gear mount and it has over 11 galons of fuel though it without any problems.

I have had 3 of these. No, none of the problems you mention were the cause. For the wing dowels, I bought some oak doweling material at Lowes, and cut it to the right size and glued them into the wing. As I remember, the dowels that came with the ARF were not as strong material. On the fuse, I put in a piece of lite ply behind the bulkhead (on the fuel tank side) where the dowels go through and drilled the holes in it so that the dowels have the bulkhead, and the lite ply to fit into. I also used the sullivan tailwheel for the same reason as hockeyrules99. I put fiberglass cloth on the landing gear mount and epoxied it in place to strengthen the mount. I didn't move the servos to the tail, but if I ever make it to number 4 I probably would. I have an OS61FX for the powerplant, and had to add some lead to the tail for balance. I could have avoided this by putting the servos in the rear. Lastly, I took square balsa pieces...not triangle...although they would probably work as well, and epoxied them around the top of the block where the nylon wing mounting screws attach to the fuse. This added strength to the wing mounting block on the trailing edge of the wing. I really like flying this plane and put about a 1/2 gallon of fuel through it last weekend.

I have had mine for 2 years now and wouldn't part with it. I mounted the servos in the tail and used carbon fiber shafts instead of the dowels. While the covering was off, I added a piece of birch ply to the wing to support the shafts. I started off with an Enya .80 4-stroke and it was a good match. I use this plane to break in engines, so it has had several power plants. It currently has an MVVS .77 2-stroke on the nose and that is the best combo yet. I also beefed up the landing gear support area after the original gear folded back on me after the first flight.

Other than the sound issue, I really like the 61fx. I am swinging a 12X8 APC prop and get plenty of vertical out of it. It is not unlimited, but it's enough for me. I like flying this so much, that I also have the Ultra Stick Lite with a Zenoah G-26 on it. Both planes are at the top of my list when it comes to planes that I like to fly.

Been flying mine for 6+ months now, I will tell you the problems I have had.
The Firewall should be pined, mine pulled loose, my landing gear riped out, and the tail broke off.
I am not complaining about the plane, it is my fav. I have a Saito .91 on the nose, pulling a 14x6 APC
Verticle is unlimited. The Landing gear tore loose when I nosed it over on landing due to a dumb thumb.
The tail has a week joint just in front of the Horz. Stab. There is a ply former in this area, and it is a week
spot in the fuse. I have reinforced mine with 1/16" ply on both sides. I fly this plane VERY hard, I have not
had any problem with the wing dowles, or bolts. So to sum it up, everyone at our field that has one has the
same 3 issues. The firewall, the landing gear plate,and the fuse at the Horz Stab.
Hope my experiance helps, have fun as this has to be the most fun flying plane I have ever owned.
The only thing close is my Funtanna 90S with a Saito 150 on the nose.

Here is a mod I am just trying. I took some old Ultra Stick 120 flaps and added to the rudder. I covered the new piece and just tapped it to the rudder with packing tape. If it helps I can glue it up and recover the new rudder. I saw Dave Robelen do his 120 the same way. I have flown it twice but the wind was really gusting hard so more testing is needed but it does help the KE and Hammerheads.

I just got my stick delivered today, and will start on it tomarrow. A mod similar to what you did to the rudder is often done on the Four Star .60. It has been discussed on the 4 star threads and is very effective to solve the knife edge coupling the standard 4 star 60 has. That plane knife edges fine once the mod is done. Needed a bigger servo than I had to get the power for it to do a knife edge loop though. I had a ST .90 in it. Anyone put one of those in the .60 ultrastick?

I must say that you have the best looking US 60 I've seen. Great job. I wouldn't mind changing my Big Boy to that scheme. Buttttt,,, I'm too lazy.:)

Well I have flown mine 5 or 6 flights with the larger rudder and it does help the KE but it is a crosswide dog now. It reminds me of a Stinson 108 with that big tail it weather vanes into the wind. I think I will take it off for now and build a little bigger rudder.
