RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Hey stallwart are you off monday?
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Some folks think I'm a bit off all the time.....LOL. Nope, I'll be working as usual.
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I am getting the YS 63:D:D:D I got to pay half but I can live with that.
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Here is some pics of the YS 63 on the rocket.
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Did not work I will try again tomarrow, my computer is acting up.
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I bought one of these about a year ago and maiden flight the tail section ripped off. Being my first Seagull I am timid to go back. I do like the new Yak though but I just couldn't believe what happened to my Harmon. I know it wasn't a build quality issue. Ah well it happens. Had a 51 supertigre on it
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I have over 200 flights on mine, with no modification of the tail, landing gear or any part of the plane. Not a probem with anything structurally has occured yet. I do watch speed in dives and go easy on the elevator in high g vertical manouvers, but it snaps like a firecracker.

RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I got to fly my rocket with the YS 63 today. I got some help from some of the guys at the field and we got all everything set up and working. We balanced it at 3.5 and we didnt have to add any wieght. After 3 crashes all ready we decided to maiden it any way. One of the instructors at the field taxied it out and then there she went in the air. It only needed a few clicks of trim for the ailerons. We did need full up trim for the throttle but I can fix that before the next time I go out. After the instructors flew it around and did some loops and rolls (they got have a little fun too!:D) he handed it over to me. I had to get used to it, everything was a little more sensitive then my p-51 pts. I had flown stallwart's before so I kind of had an idea of what it was going to be like. Then I handed the radio back to the instructor to land it, for some reason I dont like to land it the first flight?? It landed good. I was going to fly right after that but a guy with a 60 sized Hanger 9 mustang with a YS 1.10 was going to fly so I had to watch that. It was not that cool, he was only going over 100mph close to the ground!!:D Actually it was REALLY cool!!
Then I decided to fly again but the glow plug went bad so had to change that. After we got that fixed I took it up. Then stallwart got up with his and we fly around. We were chasing each other and having a good time. He was ahead of me most of the time but I was not going full throttle. I didnt try to many aerobatics but I did do some. I was really having some fun with it. ,BUT!!!!! Then it dead sticked. I was high but right buy the runway and I tried to let it drop down ,but my PTS drops faster. I figured I would be alright! Wrong. It floats pretty good! I got it down right as I ran out of runway. It got in the tall grass right as it touched down. It broke the piece of wood that the bolts go through, that hold the wing on. It tore the servo tray out and some cracked wood on the fuse. I think it live to fly another day! Some epoxy and Ca will do the trick, I think. I will keep you posted on how it goes and try to post some pics when I get if fixed and get the spinner on. I tried to post some here on the thread but it would not work. I do have some in my gallery of the motor on the plane. I could get only 2 pics to come up. Keep you posted rc-plane |
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Did everbody on this thread crash and burn or what? Still working on mine. Hard to get fired up to complete with 2 foot of snow on the ground and too cold to really brake an engine in right. Should warm up here soon mabe in the 50's by July.

No crash and burn here! Just hibernating till spring!
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I just flew mine last weekend! I put a pair of Dubro snow skis on it and flew it from the farm field behind my house. It performed perfectly on the ground, it went exactly where I wanted it to go and I could spin it in place with a good blip of throttle. Flew nice too! Too cold and windy this weekend to get out there again though.

RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I got mine fixed and if flies good now!
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Crash and burn? Heck no! Mine has so many flights on it, I might have to retire it soon out of respect for such a good model.

RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Hi guys just found this thread...Nearly finished building my Rocket as per instructions ie. 3 servos in the tail. Tried sorting C of G needs about 1lb of lead in the front!!!!! Got an OS46 installed and using S 148 servos any ideas!! I need help! by the way this is my first build thought following the instructions would be a good idea. WHOOPS!!
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I think that's way too much weight in the nose to balance. I had an Evo .46 with only 2 oz. on the firewall. Now I run a .52 with no extra nose weights. Three servos mounted in the tail, one on the servo tray, two in the wings (all per instructions) with the battery above the tank. Mine balances at 3 1/4" from leading edge at fuse sides.
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
I have an O.S 46Ax in mine with about 2 oz of lead in the nose, and the battery mounted on top of the engine box. I also have 3 servos in the tail. The Plane is balanced right on! I also use an Ultimate Aluminum spinner which probally adds another 1 ounce or so over the stock plastic spinner.

RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Thanks stallwart and ckangaroo I'll have to check mine again.Do I check it inverted or the right way up?? Does it make any difference.. Sorry if questions sound dumb I'm new to this:D:D:D
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
You check it with the Plane inverted. Low wing Planes inverted, and high wing Planes right side up. Another tip I would offer if you need to add front weight is to replace the landing gear with a heavier and stronger set. The Harmon Rocket is a great Plane, but the landing gear they provide with the ARF is terrible.
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Im like stallwart,
The landing gear are soft but they really help on hard landings. IF they bend you can just bend them back with your hands and then you will be fine. Good luck rc-plane |
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Thanks for the info won't have time to do much this weekend....Going away. I see some people have mounted all the servos in the servo tray above the wing. seems funny how some are fine with the stock set-up and others are tail heavy!! will bear in mind what you say about the u/c.. thanks again..Shane.

RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
When I had my Harmon Rocket, the only thing I remember was that the landing gear sucked big time!!!! Other than that it flew really well. used a ST 61 in it. I thought the plane was too heavy for a .46 size motor unless it was a rossi..

RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
You said you mounted the battery on top of the motor box. Do you mean outside the fuse? Do you see a problem with engine heat harming the battery? I only ask because I have a real tail weigth problem. As it is I would need to hang about 6 oz. of weight on the prop. I have the battery inside the fuse as far forward as possible but if there is not a heat issue I will move it outside. I also have an onboard glow system I could install and would put it on the outside also., it will at 3 onces. If I have to add weight it may as well have some use to it other then dead lead. The big issue is the heat, anyone with some thoughts here.
Thank You Ken |
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
My Harmon has the battery on top of the tank. I'm using the same Hitech 1100mAh battery installed a year and a half ago. I flown it in summer and winter with no problems. 90F summer days here are considered cool.
Since I'm using a Pitts muffler, airflow is directed out the bottom of the cowl which might be helpful.....and it flew well and very fast with a .46..........flies slightly better with a .52. |
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Thanks for the reply. Moved my battery to top of fuel tank tonight and added glow driver up front.
|
RE: Seagull Harmon Rocket
Finished my balance. Still needed to add 4.5 oz of weight after moving battery and adding 3 oz. glow driver. I would have needed to add more then 4.5 oz had I put the weight on motor box. I used CA and screws and put it on the motor mount. I hope that is not a problem. I wanted to get the weight as far forward as possible. I really question the design of this thing to come out so tail heavy. The manufactor should have built it without the 3 servos in the tail. My son has a Hangar 9 Pluse with a Magnum 52 that screams at a 100 plus MPH. I wanted something to beat him, that is why I got the Rocket and put a Webra 55 Speed on it. I don't think this is going to do it though. I am at 7 lbs. 4 ozs.. He is at 5.5lbs even. His airfoil is a good 1/2 inch thinner then the Rocket also. I am going to break in the motor this weekend and we will see what he Rocket can do after a few flights. Don't think it is going to come close though.
