Looking for a small plane.

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a smalll .10-.30 plane. I want to be able to throw it in my car and have room to spare. I have had a lot of different planes, but I have to say my favorite plane to fly is my Tiger 60. I love the way that plane flies and was hoping someone could reccomend a plane like that.... that flies on rails. I understand I can't fly these small planes on windy days... but on days like that I will bust out the Tiger 60 :) Thank you all in advance....it is very much appreciated.

Bipe - WM has a small Ultimate, OK Models Nieuport/Tiger Moth - really small stuff

Mono - Model Tech Extra 300, there is the Cry Baby ...

I had the Modeltech Extra with a 30 size engine. Great little plane until my big thumb did something stupid............[8D]

Modeltech Extra 300 with a .32 or .36 engine. And don't believe you can't fly small planes on windy days. This plane's got a thin airfoil and cuts through the wind just fine.

RE: Looking for a small plane.

Ok, that's not the only plane. :D Since you're looking for a throw it in the car and fly plane, I need to mention my favorite "beater" plane. Consider one of the World Models Aircombat series. While they're not the prettiest to look at, they fly great. Mine has an OS .32 FSR and it screams, but will slow down well. I take this plane to the field more often than any other. I like it so much I have an unassembled one in the closet for the inevitable day when I crash it. The one that gets the second most flights is the Extra 300. Another choice is the Thunder Tiger Lazy Tiger P-51. I don't have one, but those on here who do speak highly of them.

If you would be in the market for it, I've just bought a RTF Edge 540 electric that came with an outrunner brushless and lipo. It's a steal at $250, cheaper if you can find one on ebay. It's really convenient for a first time electric flyer since it's all ready to go, even comes with the charger. http://www.parkflyers.com/

a model tech 300 with a super tiger 52 not reall .10-.30 or a nice shrike or sig wonder the are really fast and will take the wind great at 200 mph

RE: Looking for a small plane.

Giantscaleplanes baby cap- nice little plane that I have owned. You can purchase on ebay from other vendors for around $80. Mine was from ebay.

Tiger Moth 30- also a nice little plane that I owned. Made by Pacific Aeromodels. ALso have knock-offs on ebay but I don't know the quality of those.

Great planes has a couple of combat models that look nice, although I have never personally seen one. They have a corsair and a mustang designed for that size engine.

Try the Sonic 25 from Phoenix Models. I flew one for the better part of 2 years with an O.S. .25FX for power. Very nice flyer, and a nice price also.

RE: Looking for a small plane.

I had a Tiger Bipe (35-40 size) for a while. That would go into the trunk of my Jetta (not a large car) fully assembled. I put an external charger jack on it so I could leave the wings on 24/7. The Tiger Bipe is a cute little airplane with golden age lines. It performs spectacularly with a Thunder Tiger GP 42. Flies like a typical sport plane. It's nothing special in terms of arf quality (plastic cowl and wheel pants) but overall construction/quality is perfectly decent so it's a reasonable value for the money.

how's about a nice 30 sized Gremlin? flys great,no assembly and can handle any wind nicely!

RE: Looking for a small plane.

I have a NotForSale that I flew with a .25FSR and later a .25FX. Great flying airplane and grass fields don't bother it. The .25FX is an awesome power plant and the plane is very fast with it. With either engine, it slows down nicely for landing. I bought a kit-built Jr. Tiger at my club's last auction and have a Magnum .25 for it. Either of these planes will fit your car. The NotForsale is built from plans and the Jr. Tiger is from a discontinued kit.

My favorite is the Tiger 60 also. I'm 90% finished with a Model tech ME109. this is a 25 size and will fit in the back of my extended cab Ranger. I havn't had a chance to fly it yet, hopefully this weekend. All reports indicate it will be a good flyer. Good price also $80.

how about a WM Rambler 30? it's my favorite plane!!!

i've had the gsp (cmp) baby cap, too and it was pretty small and nice but not very 3D. had great flying characteristics, though.

but the best one i think is the WM aircombat. it's rough and tough and is really stress free flying.

the hirobo 15 size cap 232's and sukhoi are okay but not recommended.

REALLY REALLY appreciate all the replies... I have been lookin at several of these planes.. I have decided on a couple of them.

Anyone have any more planes they'd like to share? I never knew there were so many good little planes out there.

Thanks again.

I'm assembling a WM Zen 30. If this plane flies as well as it's built it's going to be great. Power will be a TT Pro .36. Watch for an RCU review of it sometime in the near future. ;)

well for a throw in the car and go fly plane i have a Herr engineering Pitts bipe. its a little smaller than what you mentioned but it flies great with a .071. Built up quick and flys like nothin else for being that size! http://www.iflyherr.com/cgi-bin/dpsm...nuF.html?E+Hrr

One of the nicest flying small models is the OK Models Hydeaway 15. It is a laser cut kit suitable for .15 engines and both the kit quality and flying performance are top notch.

Here is a link to a [link=http://www.tleong.rchomepage.com/HydeAway_320x240(2)_mpg.mpg]video[/link] showing an "electrified" Hydeaway but you should get equally good performance with a .15 engine.

And here is a link to a build [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=258611]thread[/link].

MrMulligan - wait till you get a load of my N4S 60!!! Here are some pics ...

Can anyone recommend me an ARF for my OS FS26? I am not looking for a warbird unless its a WWI bipe, something like the Hydeaway is fine, can that plane be mounted with the OS FS26? Thanks!

tIANci - don't recommend this plane... but then again, it would probably be fine with the 26. my ASP can't idle worth a **** so i have never gotten this bird off the ground. but looks nice it DOES!

it qualifies being a WWI bipe :D

How about a Sig Wonder??

One of the guys at our field has one and it is amazing to watch fly --- it is one quick puppy and would be very easy to transport in the car.

I've got one of these too. It's got a TT GP-15 in it. While it does fly nice, the unexpected snap rolls have kept it from being my favorite plane. One thing that helped a little was to lower the ailerons a bit, but it still snaps if pushed. When I had to choose which of my planes was going to lose it's brain (receiver) to the Zen, the Hydeaway lost. Servos are still in, so it's not completely decommissioned, but it's temporarily out of service.

To Tianci, I don't know how it would do with a FS26. It doesn't have a huge wing, so I think the weight might be an issue. Also, remember it's a kit, not an ARF.

Here's a general idea for a quick fly , easy to maintain and transport plane. Fits in the truck of any car.
I took a Wattage Ultimate Bipe and mounted an O.S. .15LA on the nose. It runs a solid 8 minutes of hard core acro on a 2oz fuel tank.
RX is a HiTech 555. RX battery is one of those tiny 4cell 4.8 NiMh/740mah. All servos are micro Futaba.
Wingspan 30"inches
Total length 30"
Weight is under two lbs.

I painted the firewall black and put bigger foam wheels on it with red hubs so it would be able to fly from a grass field. I left the cowling off so I could simply pull the main fuel line off the carb for filling. I also didn't want to carve it up in case I ever wanted to go back to brushless power. (I included pic of when it was electric.)

Been flying this little acrobatic plane for almost two years now without any trouble. It's fast and manuverable plus very quiet with stock muffler. The only complaint I have is it won't knife edge due to the lower wing only ailerons. Wish there were a way to add ailerons to the top wing too without destroying the great flying habits it now has.

tIANci - i was talking about the bipe pictured. it's a Neiuport that they sell in taiwan for a little less than $100 i think. it's meant for a 15 size engine but a 26 fourstroke would work fine. problem with mine was it impossible to control because of the high idle on my ASP 30. the plane would just get going and not stop eventually ditching in the grass of flipping over on the runway. with a slower idle, i'm sure it would work just fine.

this one pictured is $80 on yahoo auctions here in taiwan.

Forestroke - can you send me one? Heheheheee ... the 10 sized EZ Neiuport is really nice!

tIANci - if you want one, let me know. i'll figure out how much to ship to malaysia and you can paypal me and i'll send you one :-) alot of people electrify it. it has a 10-15 engine recommendation so it may be very close to the EZ version.

this is the picture of it with the original wheels. i broke them on the dirt/grass on my first take off attempt. :-(

RE: Looking for a small plane.

tIANci, I love your Not4Sale .60. It looks beautifully built and I hope you have good luck with it. For that .26, I'd like to recommend a Great Planes Slowpoke .20 or a World Models Cub. I have a knock-off of the Cub and it flys very well with an OS.30FS. I have a Slowpoke I'm putting a .26 into.

tIANci 12-01-2005 07:44 PM

RE: Looking for a small plane.

MrMulligan - oh you mean the kit SlowPoke, my LHS has one, I will look into that, I have to check if its the smaller or bigger one. Thanks a lot. The N4S will fly one of these days, it has a plug in wing since its a 60 sized plane. She looks lovely but have yet to fly her, been sitting in the hobby room for almost a year.

Forestroke - can the OS FS26 fit into that bipe? I cannot get the mounting dimensions for the FS26. I think will need to go to the LHS and check out a TT15 to see if its the same.

forestroke 12-02-2005 01:33 AM

RE: Looking for a small plane.

tIANci - well i have the ASP FS30 in there and i heard that (shhhh) they copied the O.S. :-) the 26 is the same size. i had to cut out some of the wood from the mount but it fits just fine. i would have to admit that the 15 would be the perfect fit.

Mr. Mulligan - my avatar is the WM Cub with a O.S. FS30. great plane... but i think just right with the 30. the 26 may not be quite enough.

tIANci 12-02-2005 06:49 AM

RE: Looking for a small plane.

I think the Slow Poke will be most fun ... its about puttering about, let it turn a nice big 10" prop and cruise!

MrMulligan 12-02-2005 06:19 PM

RE: Looking for a small plane.

I'm with you on that. I'm a little old for those fast, hot small planes. I had a Little Stick that had a Magnum .25 in it. That was a fast, hot airplane. Sold it two years ago after flying it for 10. It found a good home and is still flying.

RE: Looking for a small plane.

Little electrics make the best small planes, especially brushless lipo setups.
Have you looked at the mini funtana by e-flight? Or the Mini edge?
They also have a mini ultrastick coming out.

These little buggers are made out of balsa & light ply and are covered with ultracote so they build fairly similar to larger glow planes.
Beware though, the price is not really cheap on these, you will spend about 300-350 getting a little plane set up:)

MrMulligan 12-03-2005 12:23 AM

RE: Looking for a small plane.

That Mini-Ultrastik is very tempting. I had a Mini Funtana but decided not to build it and sold it. I'm not into 3-D. I have a couple of Northeast Sailplane electrics, the Mamba and the Accord 47. The Accord is almost ready to fly, the Mamba isn't. They will have AXI's. I have a nice GWS Mustang with a Mega brushless. It's a bit of a handful. My favorite is an SR Cutie with a geared Mega brushless. For the "Gee Whiz" factor, I have a Multiplex TwinStar wit two Speed 400's.

MrMulligan - look out for the Hot Point, best cheap all round plane, will IMAC and will fly great 3D. That's the best value for money. Half the price of a Fliton Prodigy and only about 90% of the performance. Still nothing beats a little 4C chugging along on a Slow Poke!

couldn't agree with you more!!!

RE: Looking for a small plane.

May I add my agreement. The Cub I have with the OS.30FS has a problem with shedding screws that hold parts together such as the wing struts. I'm always looking for a metric screw after a flying session. If the .26 doesn't work out on the Slowpoke, I'm transferring the .30. I just got a hold of another small Slowpoke with a Magnum .30FS. It needs servos and a new fuel tank. Covering is nothing to brag about but if it is really good, I might recover it. I don't really care for the way the radio is installed, particularly the servos. I had a Slowpoke a year ago with an OS.20. Sadly, I lost it on the second flight due to c/g problems, too far rearward. It flew just well enough for me to fall in love with them. I have the .40ARF that I started a couple of years ago. At the time I didn't have the car for it. Once I finished the wing I couldn't get it into the car, a Grand Prix. I have an Equinox now and the finishing of this plane is a priority.
