U-Can-Do .60 Good or Bad?
 

I just managed to break a Low Altitude record with my Hanger 9 Twist.[:@]

I really like the Twist but I want to get something different for now.

I am leaning toward the Great Planes U-Can Do .60.

I have also been looking at a Morris Hobbies Jerry's Big Boy.

I also found someone selling Accel Hobby Katana 70’s at a reasonable price.

I have a Satio 100 that I am planning on using for my next plane.

Can't imagine that either one of them will win any beauty pageants.:)


My question is do any of these planes have any good or bad tendencies? If so please tell me about your experiences.

To be honest I do not own the UCD60 but I have flown one for several flights with a Saito 92 and it was a very nice flying plane. This gentlemen lets me test fly allot of his planes and all he mentioned that he did to it was beef the landing gear block.

It hovered very well, knife edge was fine with a slight pull to the canopy (expected since he was slightly tail heavy) inverted was a dream, flat spins were pretty flat both inverted and upright, and when I landed it it was very predictable and SSSLLLOOOWWW :D

It's way different from a Twist and if you could fly a Twist well then the UCD60 with be so much better. I had a Twist, loved it then went to the Funtana90 with a YS110 and what a difference. I still could do everything with the F90 that I could with the Twist but the F90 did it WAY BETTER

The U-Can-D0 60 has a very bad "tuck to belly" in knife edge flight. Other than that, it's a fun plane.

:)I really like the UCD airplanes. I've had the 60 and the 46. I think the 46 is a better flying airplane but I like both of them, a lot.
The 60 is very nice with a Saito 100. If you use 30% fuel it's very VERY nice. It's a great plane and I love flying the UCD. I've had many "so call nicer" airplanes but I don't think I like them better. The UCD is sooooo much fun to fly.
The problems with this plane:
1. The fuel tank is a little high and the engine will tend to leak fuel when not running. It's not a performance problem, just messy.
2. Very light airframe. This is good and bad. It makes the plane fly nicely but it is a bit fragile. But I don't think any more so than most modern 3D planes.
3. The landing gear block is weak. Almost everybody that has this plane breaks it out sooner or later. But the good news is you can glue it right back in. It's an easy fix.
4. This plane is not known for it's Knife Edge capability. I can do them all day long but it is harder than on some other planes, namely, The Yak or the Showtime just to name a couple. You either have to be good on the sticks or use a lot of mixing to get it to do a good KE.
5. I'm also told (can't do them pesonally) that the wing design of the UCD doesn't allow for good rolling harriers. It will do them but again not as nice.
6. Also, the Harrier maneuver isn't as nice as some.

On the positive side:
1. One of the funnest planes you'll ever fly.
2. Will do any 3D manuever just not as nice as some.
3. Hovers easier than almost any other plane.
4. Super easy to fly and land.
5. Very light, high perfomrance airframe.
6. The best visual detection of any airplane I fly.
7. Inexpensive for what you get.
8. Very good support and availability.
9. Flexible for engine combo. Very good with Saito 100 and 16x4W prop. Excellent with YS 110 and 16x6 prop.
10. Truly a nice 3D airplane. I've had two 60 and 5 46 sizes. They inspire so much confidence that I'm willing to try anything with them. Obviously I can't do it all. But I haven't crashed them recently.

Seanychen even has one of these with floats. Very flexible airframe.

This is one plane I will always replace and never be without. It is truly the plane I have the most FUN with. And for me, that's what it's all about.

Barry Cazier Thanks for that SUPER reply! Barry what else do you fly? I would have to make this next plane my daily flyer. Is the U-Can-Do that type of plane? I know that the Twist was it for me.

bubbagates I am glad you said that the U-Can could fly SSLLOOWW! I really enjoyed flying the Twist with 2 clicks of throttle about 5 feet off the ground. It looked cool too!

I've also had several trainers but I'm sure you have no interest in them.

The UCD would be an excellent daily flyer. I think if you liked the Twist you would love the UCD. It's a much better airplane. Again, I have more fun with this airplane than any other I've had.

Gary I think you exceeded the recommended engine size for that .46! How does it fly?
What engine do you use for your .60 U-Can-Do........Satio 220?

[X(][X(]:D[X(][X(] That's allot of engine for that plane. Heck the 92 Saito does just fine in the 60 size but would not be near as powerful as the 100 in the 46.

Ah well, I guess I cannot say much. The same guy I mentioned that let me fly his also had a Twist that had the Saito 92 in it that is now in his UCD60. He never pinned the firewall and I was there the day he did the maiden on the Twist. We checked it out, he took off nice and easy, hovered it, torqued it and a quick inverted flat spin. He landed wen to fuel it and the engine/firewall popped right out of the plane. That night he bought the UCD and has never looked back, it's his favorite plane

Ya know, i just had a 100 that needed a home,(came out of my 60) and ill tell ya it really was a great combo if done right, i had over 300 flights on it when the left main wing exploded and it went down, but wasnt because of the engine, i never abused it, just used it, i plan on putting it back in when i get my next 46, and i gonna love it too!!!

:)Saito 220!?!?! I like the sounds of that! Man, you'd have to back the idle down for hover. I think I'd love it.

Gary / bubba is there any ground clearance problems with using a 16" x 4W prop on the U-Can Do .60?

Is there any cheaper place to buy the .60 than using coupons at Tower Hobbies? $ 179.99 .60 ARF ( $25 off of $200 )

:)RCBOZO...I used the 16" prop on mine with both the Saito and the YS engines. No problems with clearence. No cheaper or better place to get 'em than Tower. If you're a super club member that includes shipping.
