RE: Retractable undercarridge instalation in a RTF

Mike

I enjoyed your retract mod for this bird. I had one and flew it stock for many seasons and it truly is a great flying machine. It is a shame it does not come with retracts from the factory otherwise id still have mine. I had hundreds of flights on mine and then finally sold it to make room. On a side note I did get a Brazilian 60 sized Tucano to replace it that comes ready for retract installation.

nice work sir, brings back fond memories of mine :)

Where did you get this Brazilian model? what make was it? how much? and lastly where can I get one?, seriously I would be very interested in this model as the Tucano/PC9 is my favorite aircraft ever since two flew over Lock Lomand whilst I was salmon fishing a couple of years back, both in black and going like stink about a half wing span apart magic memories.

Show us some pics and describe what the problem is, then perhaps we can help.

heres the first one, the others are uploading now

As you can see i've cut the centre section of the wing out to fit a retract servo in there and dont worry, im reinforcing it with carbon fibre and fibreglass so wing strenth will be better than before

Any ideas ??

here are the others. I have included all the pics of the retracts and the clearance with an 11x8 prop

RE: Retractable undercarridge instalation in a RTF

The problem is with the main retract unit itself

I can't seem to get the throws on the retract right because of the position of the retract servo, and to tell you the truth, its annoying me

i've used snake pushrods to no avail, i've used straight rods but can't get the throws right or they hit on the servo arms, HELP

I assume you are using a retract servo, one that operates through 180 deg's, the fixings of the operating push rods need to be opposite each other and the rods need to be bent slightly to allow them to miss each other when in the retracted position, to make this clear I will dig out my Mustang wing tomorrow and post a pic.

RE: Retractable undercarridge instalation in a RTF

thats the other thing mike, is that the retract servo doesn't sit low enough to actually allow for clearance

Could i fit the servo upside down ???

RE: Retractable undercarridge instalation in a RTF

You can fit the servo how you like as long as the operating arm or disc is in line with the push pull rods, the easiest solution is to use grub screw trunnions on a servo disc to attach your push rods, they are the type that you get in all the electric ARTF's now days, I am sure you know what I mean, they allow easy adjustment of the push rod and operating distance.

First thing is to establish the amount of throw you need from you retract unit, so manualy operate your retract from lock too lock, there is an area of over throw on the retract to allow movement of the push rod after the lock has operated normally, so once you have established the throw needed get hold of a servo arm with that amount of throw i.e. from one side of the arm to the other, note not from the center to the outer hole of the arm, but from outer arm too outer arm.

Next instalment tomorrow, I have been called in for dinner.

Raff

I still have the PC9, but I don't fly it much now days as I have got into turbines, I still have a subscription to this thread so I still look when a new post come's up, I'v also just got another SebArt Angel which I am converting to IC as my electric version is getting a bit long in the tooth, but still fly''s well, any help you need just post and I will see if I can help.
