RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

With regard to the nose weight I melted some lead iinto a block, 13ozand bolted it to the fire wall. This afternoon I took it to our field and started the 160 OS taxied out and at 1/2 throttle the BEAUTY took off made a couple of circuts, two loops, a couple of rolls, tried the flaps, I use a three position switch. With the 1/6th mix in the elevator no baloon at full down. Took two passes to set up and landed. I am very happy with the aircraft in the way it fly's. I think I will reduce the lead in the nose about 2 oz at a time as it did not break in a hard stall and the landing flare was not as soft as I like. The trim was a couple beeps of up and thats all. This is the fourth Stagger wing (two were by Byron) and I will tell you this one out fly's them all but it is about 10 lbs lighter. Thanks Top Flite for another good flyer.;)

Roadtrip,

I am sorry that I did not respond to your inquiry of March 22nd. I see that someone sent you a reply, but I thought that I would give you the details of my solution.

As you can see from the pictures, my little compressor comes with it's own carrying case. The air hose loops in the handle at the top. Thei it extends down to the opening in the right side of the case where the end of it and the wire are stored.

I replaced the cigarette lighter plug with banana clips, as you can see.

I cut of the tire fill nozzle on the end. Insrt a brass barbed fitting into the hose and secure with clamp. Screw on a brass adaptor. On the other end of the adaptor is a brass plug. Before you screw in the brass plug, drill a hole in th end and insert a Robart barbed air line fitting. Secure the fitting with Red Loctitie. Then add a length of Robart air line and their screw-in fitting.

It works like a charm. The air tank fills to 100 PSI in about 5-6 seconds.

Once I corrected the toe out on the gear, I also have not had any more trouble.

Just purchased my staggerwing. What wheels are guys using? What is the clearance between the robart struts (retract version)? I'm following this thread closely, thanks guys!!

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

Can someone tell me what the clearance should be between the prop and the cowl? If I mount the cowl according to where the pre-drilled holes are, I get about 1/32" clearance. That's seems to close to me.

goldenhawk11 04-07-2007 08:58 AM

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

The wheels that come with the kit are about 4 inches and they work with the Robart struts.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

I use the 160 engine and the clearance between the prop and the cowling is about 1/8th inch with the spinner back plate in place.

roadtrip 04-07-2007 11:34 AM

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

Thanks Goldenhawk. I thought 1/32" clearance was just too close.

Can someone help me out here with my brain lock??[>:] I'm trying figure out an easier way to install my needle valve wire through the top of the cowling and still lock it down with the set screw inside the cowling on the needle valve with the cowling installed.[:@]

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

I took a long about 1and1/2 inch 2/56 socket head bolt and drilled out the hole in the needle valve set it in the hole locked it. Then you can access the needle with a ball link tool after the cowling is in place. That is if you have a 160 O/S side mounted..

I'm using the Saito 150, mounted on its side, Slimline Pitts-Style muffler. I've sized the wire to fit. I put the cowl on first, , then insert the wire thru the hole in the cowl, put it into the needle valve knob, lock the set screw and it's done. Takes about 15 seconds.

In using the OS 1.60 2-stroke is an adapter required to mount the spinner that comes with the plane? If so, what length and threads? I'm in the process of ordering all the small bits, the big items have already been ordered and are enroute. Any other items that people upgraded from what was supplied with the kit would be appretiated! Thanks!

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

I am using the OS 1.60 too. I used an old allen wrench that fit into the needle valve, it already, obviously, has a flat spots and a nice 90 deg bend in it. I cut off the excess and used a flash light to shine from the top down through the cowl to locate the correct placement of the hole. Works great! Fitting the cowl over the extension is not a problem because the cowl will flex alot, so there is no need to install the extension after the cowl is on, it's easier to do it before hand and make sure it won't come loose.

Great ideas, guys. I figured out that I could place a wire just long enough to stick out of the top of the cowling into the needle valve knob, lock it down with the set screw and then slide the cowling over the wire, as it does indeed flex enough to get it over. Then I installed a small wheel collar on the wire so I can turn the needle valve easily and doesn't look all that bad from outside the cowling. Also works great![&:] Don't forget the flat spots and lock tight.

I keep forgeting to post this question. I remember reading something about using the Sintered Bronze tank filter as a filtered clunk, but I don't remember what it was I read other than it can build up debris over time and should be removed from time to time to clean it. Any opinions on this clunk filter? What are others recommending for a fuel filter clunk? I'm currently using standard filters from my electric pump to remote filler valve, from the remote filler to tank and a filter to the needle valve assembly from the tank. No filter in the tank. Should be enough, huh?

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

smchale,
The spinner should come with an adapter and back plate, so if you mount the cowl where the drive hub (for the OS 1.60 2-stroke) is flush with front of the cowling and put on the back plate of the spinner, you should have 1/8" clearance between the front of the cowl and where the prop mounts. That's close enough for me. The included adapter will secure the prop to the shaft and drive hub and the spinner screws into the adapter to lock in in. Also, I used thin rubber washers under the metal ones with 3-7/64" sheet metal mount screws for the cowling. The rubber washers and oversize screws put less pressure on the cowl with better security and less chance of cracking. (I hope)!!!

I am using an OS 160 when I tried to use the spinner adptor nut I found the spinner would not hit the back plate. It needs to move back by about 1/4 th inch any one else have that problem? If so how did you fix it?

I have heard of that happening to another builder. I do not have that problem, maybe because I am using an 18" wood zinger prop. It may have a thinner hub, which would allow everything to tighten closer to backplate. What type of prop are you using? You did replace the original jam nut with the adaptor jam nut, right?

I found that I have the old jam nut whichm is the problem I think. Thanks

Here is a tip--- Be careful with it! It's the most fragile airplane I've ever had. It's thin and flexes a lot. If you bump it or even stare at it hard enough the gel coat will pop off. Someone in an earlier post said "everyone must be over at the 310 thread"

I have both airplanes and I can tell you, without a doubt, the 310 is awesome and the Staggerwing, (from a quality standpoint) is a POS. I won't even get into the covering issues.

I truly think Top Flite needs to revamp, have a good stern talking to, or just plain fire their vendor. It makes them look bad!

bluestratos 04-11-2007 09:27 AM

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

I can only guess it must be different production runs but mine is fine, the gel coat is solid, no chipping (I had to be carefull at screwholes etc.. ) and my covering job was top notch.. a few wrinkles that came out with my heat gun. The only problem I had was with the windshield but the manufacturer looked after me.. sent out an entire new fuselage so I could pull out the windscreen and replace the broken one in mine.

Best regards,
Randy

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

I have just finished assembling the Staggering Wing. I have assembled many kits and ARF's over the past 65 years but with out a doubt this one is, as far as quality control the worst, ever. I spent ( as did one of my friends) 10 hours minimum working on the covering wrinkles were all over the covered surfaces. This is not to mention the miss located pins or maybe it was the holes. One wing has a slit in it right out of the bag. The pull pull wire tubes were not in the correct place. The cowling is not the same color as the rest of the aircraft and the paint is very britle. It is already cracked is several spots. ...

NUFF SAID!
