Flavio,
I am about 1/2 way thru the assembly of the Staggerwing and am probably going to use the Evo 35 also. Do you have any pictures of your installation? Or can you tell me of any problems you had? What motor mount did you use and exhaust? Thanks.

Russ,

I'll upload some pics, but on a few days, because all my R/C stuff is in a barn in my mountain cabin and I won't go there till Wednesday.

Anyway, for now, I can tell you this: Evo 35 is a great engine for that plane. I used a regular nylon mount and a regular inverted muffler. Though, I love the solution Goetz did to exhaust a few posts ago.

I built a "T" of hardwood and glued it to the firewall to assemble the ignition and it works great.

Go ahead with the assembling and wait a few days before attaching the engine and I'll take pics of all of the engine mounted to give you an idea of what i did.

Flavio,
It will be a while before I get to the engine mounting. That darn thing called work gets in the way all the time! I agree, the installation Goetz did was very nice indeed, but maybe a little too much for me. Thanks for your help.

Thanks Flaviosi. Those pictures will help. I hope to get to the engine installation this weekend. I have the same muffler and also the Evo inverted pitts, guess I''ll try them both to see which fits best.

Russ,

The Evo inverted Pitts will do better... Let us know, though.

This thread has been quiet for a while. Thought I'd post an update on my latest upgrade. I decided that a little more power was needed, particularly at takeoff so I removed the Saito 1.70 radial I flew with last season and replaced it with an Enya VT-2.40 v-twin with McDaniel/SonicTronics onboard ignition and Keleo Creations exhaust. It's got unbelievable power and swings a 20 x 8 prop at 7,100 rpm. The sound of the big V-twin is awesome. I'm hoping to test fly it next weekend. Here's a link to a short video: http://www.rcuvideos.com/item/VXQYB27VYMQD1RSH

GaGeeBees, I've got a new Staggerwing in the box wating for a 170-are you saying that its marginal power for the model? Saito 200 in-line twin?

"Marginal" would not be the way I'd describe it. "Scale" is more accurate. The 1.70 is a wonderful engine and I debated quite a while before deciding to swap it out. One of the deciding factors was the fact that I needed so much ballast (in my case it was 26 ounces) on the firewall to make the plane balance. My thinking is, if I need more weight then I'd prefer to add weight in the form of more engine rather than just lead. Once in the air, the 1.70 is plenty and will pull the airplane through any maneuver appropriate for this plane - it won't hover and neither would the full scale :) Take off was the only time I found myself wanting a little more power in reserve. The 200 twin is an awesome engine and I would think it would be a great match but I have no experience with that one. Before I got the Enya V-twin I thought seriously about going with the new Saito 36cc gas engine. My 1.70 radial now resides on the nose of a Pacific Aeromodels clipped wing Monocoupe and is a perfect match for that plane.

I wasn't completly truthful; I have the Staggerwing in its box, just waiting for a 170R, but a GP Super Stearman also awaits-I was planning on using the 170 in the Stearman first and see how it pulls the bipe-then on to the Staggerwing. Beautiful work on yours, GaGeBees!

Has anyone had a problem with the paint not matching on the diffrent parts? I had a cracked cowl, orderd a new one from GP, they sent out in short order. Their support is great to work with. Did some work to the cowl, vents, exhaust, ec. Put the cowl on and it's orange compaired with the dark red fuse. [:o] I sent an E-mail to support( no reply). Don't know what to do,lot of work in the cowl but it makes the plane look strange[&o]. Also the main L/G covers are a diffrent shade as is the Monokote.

Well, finally am 99.9% done with my Staggerwing. All I have left to do is tune the engine a bit and fly her. Thanks to everyone here for the advice and tidbits of information, it was a big help in finishing this one. I ended up going with a Evo .35GT gasser with the Brisson muffler (the inverted pitts wouldn't fit - hit the firewall) and pretty much all the standard stuff everyone else used, good hi-torque JR servos (4721) on everything except the retract valve and throttle and Fromeco Li batteries on receiver and ignition. I heard everyone say that they had to add nose weight, so I moved as much stuff as I could as far forward as I could and ended up having to put about 6oz in the tail. Unfortunately, won't be able to maiden flight her for quite some time, travel alot for work and won't be home for month or maybe up to 3, but I'll let you know how it goes eventually.

Russ,

Just curious about the location of your N-numbers. I mounted mine on the right for the top wing and on the left for the bottom. I thought that was the standard location but maybe it doesn't matter. Any reason you went with the reverse?

Thanks,
Paul

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

No, Paul, no reason at all and you are probably correct as to the placement. I was at a airport recently and there was a Stearman sitting on the ramp and it had it's N numbers placed on the wing similar to what I did, so maybe that stuck in my mind when I put them on. Or maybe just cause I'm left handed??? :-)

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

I noticed today one of my flying buddies has a Hangar 9 Cub that has the numbers mounted like yours. Looks like either way is okay. Good luck with your first flight.

Hey there. I just picked up a TF Staggerwing kit, or at least most of it,,,,was a great deal. Does anyone have any "left over" retracts for the Staggerwing from an unfortunate demise that they are not using and that they would like to get rid of?

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

Finally got my Staggerwing back in the air today. It was the first flight with the new Enya 2.40 v-twin and what a great match! The CG came out dead on without the need for any ballast. The big twin ran great, sounded awesome and hauled the plane with authority. Another bonus I noticed was how nicely it slowed down for landing. The larger prop made a nice "brake" on final approach. I'm going to try and get some video next weekend and will also take the radar gun out and get some mph readings. This thing really moves!

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

Ok, no landing gear around and available, looks like.

I traded for a mostly NIB TF Staggerwing kit that is missing a lower right wing...(long story) The wings are not all new in box, but are in good shape.

I have an extra upper left wing (part of the long story). Gently used, but in good shape.

If someone needs just an upper left, lets talk I am willing to make a deal for it.

If someone has a spare lower right, I'd like to make a deal for it. Prefer new or gently used, but willing to consider almost any condition short of broken in half...:)

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

Wish I could help you but I'm currently using all my wings and the landing gear. You might check Tower Hobbies scratch & dent department and see if they've got anything. You won't find the retracts there but you might get lucky and get the wings at a reasonable price.
