Nice photos AND great looking model!
Looks like the real thing. Camera with a telephoto lense? |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
The pilot makes it look that much more like the fullsize.

"Camera with a telephoto lense?" ::::::: Oh yeah !!! one of our local pilots (also a Sheriff Deputy) well:::: his second hobby is photography. So we all get free pictures: His telephoto lens I think about 1,500.00 Bucks Denis |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Beautiful. I see you're on a hard surface, so you could keep your lower gear doors. Mine got ripped of on the maiden take-off. :(
Unfortunately, we don't have any good photographers or videographers in our club, other than me, so it's hard to get good pics of mine while I'm flying. |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Thanks, knucklebutt for the photos. I totally forgot about making my own extension. Sometimes the obvious is right in front of your face and you still can't see it. However, I now have a new problem. I seem to have misplaced the bolt and nut that attaches the spinner to the prop shaft. I ordered a new bolt and nut adapter for the OS 1.60 2 stroke I have, but the nut is to thick and for the the spinner to mount flush at the backplate and the bolt is to big to fit into the spinner hole. Can anyone tell me where I can get the replacement spinner/prop shaft hardware for this set up?[:@]

I've been flying my Staggerwing since it first came out with an Evolution 35 gasser and it's been nothing but fantastic. Love the way it flies, and it still gets comments every time I fly it. Had the pleasure of flying in formation with another fellow flier with the same plane, his with a G-38. The two of them flying together was enough to stop everyone at a crowded flying field and just watch. (Glad I didn't screw up!) Anyway, I've always flown it fairly conservative just knowing TF stopped making them and didn't want to lose such a great plane. Well I lucked out and found a hobby shop that still had 3 in stock so I picked up a new-in-box one today for a spare!! Now I can rest easy and really enjoy such a great plane.

If I din't have 20+ large scale planes in my hanger (built and unbuilt) I would ask where it was and ask the guy to ship me one... Cali...is a ways away to drive and pick it up.... If it was close, I probly would anyway... It is called "aircraft HORDERS"..... (Soon to NOT be aired on a low budget cable channel...No where near you...) I will have to sell some of mine...too many...really... |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
24lbs with the twin, and 20-21lbs on electric....
Why so much difference??... It even uses a bigger prop...??? I am glad to see that it flys with a 20ich prop and no issues with ground clearance... I must have a really weak os 1.60 gemini...because it can just barely do a loop with my Giant Super Chipmunk...and that isn't close to 23lbs.... Go figure..... But it alsways seems that my motors are weaker than elsewhere...... I just ordered up a windscreen...(spare parts you know...) |

But it alsways seems that my motors are weaker than elsewhere...... I just ordered up a windscreen...(spare parts you know...) The 20" prop has plenty of ground clearance, it has never come close even on our rough field. My Gemini seems weak also. It is serial number 582, with almost ten years of constant flying in the Sig 1/4 scale Clipped wing Cub I originally bought the engine for. It was completely rebuilt by Tower Hobbies around '94 when the crankshaft separated. Under warranty, nearly ten years old! After the Cub was mid-aired, the engine has been in 4 other planes, including the SW. It seemed sluggish in the last two, just nowhere near the power it used to have. The electric conversion went so well, I sold off ALL my nitro equipment and have gone 100% electric, with no intention of going back. All but two of my eight planes now are IMAA legal. I love not having to clean up at the end of the day, don't have to overbuild for vibration resistance, etc, etc. Yes the sound is lacking, somewhat, but in these biggies, there is a natural growl under power. You could hear it in the video. |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
something I do on my large planes. When I have a engine that is light and the plane will be tail heavy, I pull the engine forward a little bit. This will keep you from having to add so much weight to the front of the plane. I had to do that in my Hangar 9 p-47 150 and my Top Flite staggerwing. I have a OS 160FX in both.
|
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
That is a great idea....I forgot about doing that....
I may do that with my GP giant Super Chipmunk, and my os 160 Gemini Twin... That would reduce that total weight, as I wouldn't have to place a large NIMH battery in it...to offset tail heavy condition... |

Guys, I'm planning to install in my T/F Stagerwing the G-26 Mag version. do you think will be enough power?

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Some say yes it would be...
I would think it would do fine once it was up and running in the air... It is the takeoffs and landing overshoots, that some will be wanting more... |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Especially if you fly off had surface. I have the recommended 160 FS which I believe is less power than the G26. Mine is 20.5 lbs and has plenty of power for take off. Level flight is about 2/3 throttle

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I have a os 160fx in mine and I am at 17.8 lbs factory gear, and it takes off great. It should be fine, I think the OS 160 has more pulling power than the G26. The reason why I say that is because the os 160 and g26 are both 26cc engines, but the nitro in the OS 160 give it a little more power. I would compare the g26 with the Supertigre 2300. I had a gentleman in TN fly the staggerwing with the ST2300 and it look like the plane was barely moving.(G26 has a little more power than a st2300)
If you were to change the OS 160 to gas then they would be on the same playing field as power. There is a video somewhere with a staggerwing with a g26 and it seemed fine. I will try and find it. |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I would appreciate it if you find the video of the plane with the g-26 flying , someone else told me to use a evolution 35.
will soon have to make a decision.. Please help me Alex |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I have one NIB that I haven't started the build yet. Leaning towards using a Zenoah 38 for power. I ordered a set of N numbers from CFC Graphics that should be here any day now. I figured this plane was well worth the addition of the graphics. :D

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Handyman 220, I love Zenoah engines, but the g-38 has a rear exhaust, in order to make room for the muffler you should cut out the firewall, Ihate to do that, so I am thinking about an Evolution 40GX, what do you thing????
Alex |
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Labebe, From what I can see it looks pretty easy to cut the firewall to modify it for the Zenoah 38 muffler( pg. 33 screen name Grassroots). Just look back in this thread, a picture IS worth a thousand words. As for the Evo 40Gx, I have no experience with them so I can't give you an opinion one way or the other(there is someone that used an EVO 35). Hopefully someone else can give you an answer better than myself. Good luck with your build! ;)
|
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
What about the distance between the firewall and the back plate?? The manual says just 6", don't you think that the g 38 is longer than that??
|
RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Sorry I can't really give a conclusive answer as I haven't started to assemble mine yet. When I do start the assembly I will static mount the Zenoah and see if it will work. I also have a DLE 30, but I think the Zenoah is do able, might have to move the engine a little to suit the installation.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
If the one gent said the 1.60 twin worked well, I would think the zenoah 26 would be great...
My 160 twin must be weak, or my super chipmunk is heavier than I once thought... I only had it up 1-flying endevor, so really unfair to judge at this point.... I do think the 1.60fx is dif. annimal. This engine is considered a replacement to a 45cc gas engine.. Perhaps the difference in pull between a 26cc and 50cc gas engine isn't as large as I once thought??... I have flown 50cc aerobatic planes with a 23cc gas engine, and it did okay, but this was on a SIMULATOR>>>:D I wish My saito 325radial would fit w/o any modification to the cowl. The valvles....touch the cowl walls... I wouldn't be concerned about cutting into the firewall for a muffler.... You can always cutt ample room, and then use the original cutout piece, to fill the hole??? |
