so then the homeless saito 180 sitting on my shelf should be perfect for this bird!

My Staggerwing kit showed up today.

No time to look closely at everything (I'm at work) but for those interested, the cowl measures about 8 1/2" wide at the front and tapers larger toward the rear.

An inverted engine installation may be fine since it is larger from centerline to the bottom than it is to the top.

I also got the Robart retracts with the air kit and manual tailwheel. They look good too.

Now back to work...

so i guess the 5cylinder radial from saito would be overkill in cowl and power wise?

The Saito five cylinder, in my oppinion, would be too much. I have one in my Aeroworks Stearman and the engine would be too big and heavy. I pick up my Staggerwing tomorrow. I'm looking into a Evolution motor but waiting to see what others will do.

Going by those measurements, a G38 will fit completely inside the cowl.

I hope the G38 fits. Thats what I am planning on powering it with. Once I get one that is.:D

Looks like it's gonna be real close. Again, according to the manual, want 6" from the firewall to the prop hub. This looks like 6.6" if I read the measurements correctly. And given the size (circumference) of the firewall, looks like there might be a problem routing the exhaust pipes. But try it and let's see what you come up with.

I received mine today, it is ALOT bigger than I expected. The fuse is huge! The pilot is pre-painted, unlike the instructions say. So-Far, So-good.

Are they back in stock at Tower?

Got the Saito 170 today and it seems to be no problem at all to fit this engine inside the cowl.

Well, I too received mine yesterday. You are right, what a beauty. Everything was in the box and it survived all of the shipments and handling without any damage. I did notice some marring from the sealing irons but now big deal. Still thinking about the Saito radial or the OS radial. If not, then I will probably go with gas. Cheers to all, good building and above all, goooood flying.

OOOPS!

Anyone else have the problem I did? The holes for the anti-rotational dowels on the lower right wing were drilled improperly. See attached photo. The left wing is OK.

I Emailed Top Flite, today. I hope that they respond quickly.

The photo didn't get attached. Can anyone explain the procedure to me?

Thanks.

Jim, so you went ahead and got one. Can't wait to see it at Deer Grove. As for attaching images, just look a little futher down from the box where you are typing. you should see something like "File" and "Click here to upload images and files!". I think you then need to locate your picture file.

Thanks Ed. I think that I see what I did wrong. I used "Fast Reply" instead of "Submit Reply."

Lets see if I can post the picture this time.

Jim,

I have the same problem only mine are not quite as bad as yours. The dowels will fit but the fit of the wing to the fuselage is ugly with the wing being lower than the fuse by 1/16" to 3/32". There is no way to effectively try to drill out the rest of what should have been done without making a mess anf would be very difficult to make them line up. And shouldn't have to do this anyway. They have obviously missed a Quality Control point and I'll bet there are others.

I called this morning to get the tail cone replaced which had been crushed and cracked.

So much for the post way back there that said they were late coming on line because GP was making sure it was right. [:'(]

The plane is larger than the GP Pitts and I know a few who run BME 50's in them

Both of my lower wings are off. I guess it's time to call Tower and see what they can send me some new lower wings.

Guess I better not hinge the flaps and move on to the ailerons.

Sheesh!

I had one of these on order but late Sept i canceled and decided to wait until rev 2 just because of problems like this. I'm not glad you guys are having issues but I'm glad I waited. Looks like a well built plane though. Think this issue can be fixed easily?

I would TRUST G.P. will correct the problem I found their service 110% on the Waggstaff Extra they introduced a while back which had a couple issues they promptly corrected. I'm a builder but I trust these folks[8D]
