So which variant is this Spitfire, Mk IX?
I don't think so. The canopy looks closer to the bubble canopy that was used on later variants and this along with the shape of the tail fin would make me more inclined to think it is a Mk XIV.

Did you mean to say Mk XVI? The Mk XIV didn't have the bubble canopy, although it was Griffon powered and probably the most potent Spitfire that served during the war.

The Mk XVI on the other hand had 2 firsts for the Spitfire series. First was the bubble canopy. Second first was that it used a Packard (built under license) Merlin... Packard musta had some left after equipping all 'em P-51s...

That being said, in looking at the pictures of the WM Spitfire, it doesn't look like either. It kinda has a canopy that looks like a cross between the two. Too bad it doesn't look more scale.

Interesting. Based on the pictures it looks like this WM ARF may be coming with decently-sized wheels instead of those teeny things they supply now.

I gotta get one of these. I love Spitfires.
Are yuo listening, Santa? :)

It was my understanding that some of the later Mk XIV Spitfires did in fact have the bubble canopy.

I agree the canopy does look not quite like a bubble version but not the original version either. Apart from that I think it looks quite good.

Howdy all...I just got a Sportsman Aviation .60-.90 size Spitfire. It looks to me (mostly) like a MK. V with the shape of the fin/rud. and the external armor glass windshield. The outline's not bad, and the construction looks pretty good. Sure, the gear's not scale, but the ground handling(in the wind) at least should be a lot better than the narrow track of the original. Besides, you don't see it when it's up + flying. I like it's looks better than the WM's version.(I think it is a MK.XVI like someone above said, according to my "Spitfire in action" by Squadron/signal pub.) The S.A. mk.V (or IX depending on which spinner you use) has the gray/green camo. which looks good, but the bottom's covered w/ a horrible shade of bright blue! I'm gonna spray it "sky type S" w/a duck egg blue spinner which will help it look more scale like. Also I need some 6 to 7" lower wing roundelles...(any body know where I might find some? Maybe I'll ask over on the warbirds/scale forum...I got mine@ my LHS, but it's available from Hobby People in case anybody's interested. I know this was supposed to be about the WM Spit, and I thought about getting one but, while on a routine mission to my LHS I spied the S.A. Spit just begging me to have a look and I grabbed it for $199.99 (Got the 3-1/2" spinner thrown in for free) If you don't want to wait, the S.A. version's already out there, no wondering...It's not bad, 64" span, comes w/retracts(look like the same ones as in my H-9 P-51) The only thing I don't like is it has too much diehedral (gonna take care of that though)

Shoulda done my research a little better. You're absolutely right maverick, the XIVE most definitely had a bubble canopy. But the WM spit still doesn't look like a XIVE or XVI...

You're right. It seems to be OK except for the funny shaped canopy. Also the roundels shown on top of the wings are incorrect and are actually appropriate for under the wing. The top needs the roundels that are just blue and red with no white in them.

I still want one though! :)

Just received an email from WM regarding the Spit. Dec shipment is sold out already and the next shipment will be in January. Looks like this is going to be a hot one.

World has their first ad for the new Spitfire in the February M.A.N. on page 42, looks acceptable...

Are the pics any different than what is on the World Models website?

I canned my subscription to MAN when I realised it was mostly fluff, so I don't have a copy.

The plane looks acceptable, but I don't know about those blue and white stripes on the wing and aft fuselage.

If I understand it correctly the finish is painted on. Anyone have experiance with this type finish ?. Seems like repairs etc would be difficult.

Repairs?

What's "repair"? When I put one in it's usually "strip & toss"...

Excellent point on the repairs CM. Seriously though I have raced the T-34's and more then once repaired them after a mid air at around 100 mph. These planes are built tough......
