Most common crash reason?
I either seem to run out of runway more often then some people, or seem to try to show off a little too much causing a major flight risk.

There ain't nothing like the air above you, the fuel you've burned, and the runway behind you...
When you need it... Soft landings always, Bobby of Maui |
Most common crash reason?
I'd have to say my biggest reason for any crashes I have had is a because of a lack of DICIPLINE, Almost every crash I have had I can only blame me and my cockieness on the flight field.
I need to only do what I KNOW I can get out of safely! Thats the key to no crashing-of course other than mechanical failuer or glitching of some sort which is actually quite rare (other than engine burn out) But even 99% of my engine burn outs have been landed safely! (nice open field)!!! |
Most common crash reason?
I'd say the most common reason for crashes at my club (Not including newbie's) would be radio related, such as flat batteries, servo failure etc.

Cause of crashes
There are many, pilot error has to rank high. I have greatly decreased my problems by;
Always do thorough range check Then before EACH flight Check for previous damage Check batteries. before every flight Double check control throws and direction Check your mind set focus on what you are doing ALWAYS fly with a spotter, two heads are better than one This won't solve all your problems but it will make your odds better for having a good day |
Most common crash reason?
I didn't break the plane... I was merely testing it's durability. And I placed in the woods...because it's made of wood and I thought it shoud be with it's family.
|
Most common crash reason?
Probably the largest share of crashes I have observed and/or participated in (heh, heh) are due to reason #5, i.e. insufficient power at low altitude leading to a stall and inappropriate touching of the ground. Pilot inattention to preflight of the aircraft runs a close second.

The engine in my Lanier Twister loaded up, and quit while attempting a hover at approximately 15 feet above the ground. Bent the gear, and did minor wing damage, but repairable. Needless to say, my flying day was cut short. This ultimately was pilot error due to the warmer climat change. I was going to lean her out the next flight. It's a shame we tend to get in a hurry to fly. I've been at it for 15 years, and know better. Lesson learned; AGAIN!!!!

Number 1 reason: being an idiot :D
Seriously, most of the crashes I've had can be attributed to dumb thumbs, brain farts, momentary lapses of sanity (whatever you want to call it) Just the other day I dorked my heli cause I got brain fade. I'm still kicking myself for being so stupid and trying to do things in a hurry. Jeff |
Most common crash reason?
My point exactly Jeff! We all tend to hurry, and end up kicking ourselves afterwards.
Come to think of it, the last few mishaps have been my own doing. Currently, I work with a lot of new members in our club as an instructor. I need to do as I say. I'm always preaching to the newbees about checking everything twice before going to the field, and if it doesn't feel right, don't fly that day. Yet from time to time I won't do a thorough check on my own stuff, and will force myself to put something in the air. I'm usually O.K., but it's the rule of numbers, you're bound to have a lawn dart eventually. I'm going to make a conscious effort to be more careful from here on out. Thank you R/C Universe for getting me thinking about this! Dougboiler91 |
reason?
PILOT ERROR- forgot to check batt voltage
crashed 40 size ultra stick due to dead battery................... It is fixed now though, and flying again. fun airplane. WOOD |

My biggest reason for crashes???? Taking off. :D

Hit a fence, Now who put that darn fence there!!!

Most common crash reason?
David Letterman's unofficial top 10 list to why we crash.
1. -Failed to preflight 2. -bugs 3. -trees, fences, outhouses, and new trucks are in the flightpath 4. -heat, cold, high winds, hurricans, and snowstorms (typical weather conditions for a fun-fly in Wisconsin) 5. -Sun 6. -in a hurry 7. -peer pressure / Vultures Row 8. - the "itch" and the need to scratch it 9. -Crazy Eddie (every club has one!) 10. - too much testosterone |
Most common crash reason?
I had spent two month redesigning and fabricating a Speedy Bee from Clancy aviation. It was sweet with stars and stripes scheme and every one was ooooing and awing over it. I got it in the air and went around the field once, a new guy went up with his plane, tried to pass me from above, lost his orientation and dove into my plane! It was raining balsa and Monocoat! His prop chew up my fuselage like a chainsaw! One of our senior members was with the new guy but walked away to talk to somebody. Now the Speedy Bee is a pile of tooth picks and the other guy's plane was destroyed also.
I also lost a plane once to having the wrong plane programmed into my computer radio.....the ailerons were backwards and I lost it! |
Most common crash reason?
stalls...being dumb...and radio failure but I've never had a problem with inverted ailerons at least....
|
Most common crash reason?
I love the top ten list mentioned above. Especially number 9. My club has three crazy Eddies. No one else goes up when they are in the air, and when they're up together; well let's just say I could charge admission!

You guys forgot about "getting hit" on the same frequency. That's not pilot error or stupidity on YOUR part....this one really gets you a little warm under the collar. There you are minding your own business then...holy &%@! Then you're $2-$3 thousand in the hole and the other guys says, "Sorry!" ARGH!!
I circumvent a lot of my own stupidity through range checks. Thank the Lord my dad taught me to do that! |
Most common crash reason?
Yea Stallion I thinks thats about the only reason you can go down thats not your fault. Well their is one other reason and its blamed more often than everything combined and hardly never is the case, Radio problems heheheheh man what an over used excuse!!!!!!
Let,s see I am chief builder, chief Mechanic, Chief Test pilot, Chief Pilot and lets not forget Chief Ground crew I guess thats means I haft't to take the blame almost all the time!!!!!!!! :D |
Most common crash reason?
Thanks Chklist....you are heart! Let us know when you loose another one......... ;)

Most common crash reason?
Fly High, most stuff always seems to be stall related but everones doing stuff so close to the ground, no room to recover. If you have half of the problems listed above if your high up you should be fine. I lost my traner cause the bat was low. Did a nose dive into the ground, that was befor the wings ripped off in air, that was the most trumative crash I have seen to date. If you constantly check batt level, make sure you fuel tubing system is rock solid, no chance for crimping or tubes comming disconected you still can crash. But hopefully you wont feel stupid cause you did something wrong. Thats just my 1/2 a cent.

I forgot to turn on the RX!
Many years ago, while living in San Diego. I was at Torrey Pines Glider port. This is on a High Cliff above the Pacific Ocean. I was watching the activity and thinking about getting into gliders. One of the pilots carried a large glider to the edge of the cliff and with a big he-man heave, hand launched the plane into the wind. As he let it go, he yelled, " I forgot to turn on the radio!!!" I think he was expecting the plane to do a 180 and come back to be fixed. Well it didn't! We watched as it floated down the cliff out to sea.
It got smaller and smaller as it went out a very long way; before splashing into the waves. Not too many flyers laughed, until it hit the water. Then all *&&^ broke out! A few of this guys friends scaled the face of the cliff to go retrieve the plane. I think that was in 1983. It still makes me smile when I think about it. Maybe cause I have not done that one, Yet! I think that a proper Pre-flight inspection with a check list, just like the full size planes will help with a lot of these incidents! I plan to make one real soon! |
Most common crash reason?
Forgive me Father for I have sinned..
I will confess my errors in hopes of not repeating them: 1. Very first flight I ever did, Ailerons reversed 2. RX battery was shot 3. Depth perception, tree was closer than I thought 4. Mystery gremlin took over, plane tanked down and I had no control. Found the earth at about 80mph :) matt |
