I have the new version of this plane I believe. It has a blue motor mount instead of the white I see lots here. I am wondering if the elevator is weak from the factory or if it is flimsy from a maneuver? It seems that the outside of the elevator is easily flexed when you apply little pressure.

How about that ys110? Anyone have a report? I am looking to upgrade the saito 100 asap and wouldn't mind one's opinion on the FZ100S from YS. I would like to order one by tuesday at latest....need to break in and fly by sunday. Kevin

Thanks...I was wondering where that one went. I looked right over it apparently. So your saying the engine for the V1 and V2 would be different? If not then what's the difference where I post? I think I am going to go with the saito 125 unless there is a better idea for vertical performance. Kevin

Maidened my edge yesterday. It flew great. For the amount of money, this plane is about as good as it gets. It does'nt have the performance with the saito 100 I was hoping for but I'm pretty happy with it over all. The cg was set at 100 but I think I'll move it to 95mm, a little tail heavy at 100. I would definetly recommend this plane for anyone getting into 3d. Use a saito 125 and It will be awesome. Also Upgrade tail wheel and add some bigger tires. Great model seagull!!! Joe

Well the tailwheel assy is very weak. Mine broke on take off, the bracket that is. I fixed it and replaced my aileron servos and rudder servo with hs-5625MG's. They are much faster than the 645's I had in there...and they are digital as well.

I've read plenty on the Seagull Edge 540 but wanted to see if someone or a couple of you could summarize any enhancements that I will need to do I.E. Wing, tail.

The guy that I bought it from indicated to me that he has had no problems with the plane but he was using a .71 (don't remember who's) and I'll be using an OS 91 FX. do I need to pull the covering off the wing and reinforce anything?

The tail is a given regarding the flying wires. Don't know if I'm going wires or 1.5mm carbon rod with small rectangle carbon at the ends (I'll epoxy the flats,drill a hole through and epoxy ends of carbon) sounds like a lot of work but I've done this on another model and it's virtually indestructible ) of course I was also thinking of sheeting in CF or making another elevator and rudder out of ply) anyway the jury is out on exactly what I'll do regarding the tail surface. Most likely I'll wait till my first crash and rebuild the tail... Ok just talked myself into just the CF rod approach...very fast fix

Ok, so now I'm back to the wing. should I strip it down and reinforce it anywhere or just fly lightly until I see what she does?

What problems are you trying to fix? This is a pretty straight up plane, unless you have something(s) wrong with yours. Are your servos tail mounted or cabin mounted?

regarding problems trying to fix...nothing currently just trying to prevent failures. I've read where there have been wing failures as well as elevator failures. So what I'm trying to determine is If the wing problems exist enough to go ahead and take care of before I have a failure. I think from what I've read the elevator will be fine so long as I use the flying wires or some type of structural reinforcement.

As to servo placement, the rudder is in-house and the two elevator are tail mounted.

I have been flying mine for a year and a half. Yes, use wire supports on the horizontal stab. It's unfortunate the servos are in the tail, as you will need to add weight to balance. I have heard of some who have managed to bend the wing tube. There are people in the world who can break anything. I have a Mag 91 2stroke on mine. Your OS 91FX will be fine. You will have to do something really stupid to break this plane from flight loads.

Treat it well and it will give you lots of enjoyment. Have fun! ;)

Ya know this is very good to hear because it goes along with about half of what I've heard. I personally believe that there are bad apples in every bunch along with people that fly out of the envelope for a particular plane. And it's the combination of both of those issue that cause a majority of the problems.

That being said. If I fly within my abilities I believe that I'll be just fine. If I fly the plane within it's design envelope all is good. If I try to fly high speed 3D then I'll have problems...which makes sense because the is essentially a 100 dollar plane and I shouldn't expect 500 dollar performance.

regarding in-house or tail for the servos, I can easily move the servos inboard if balance is that big an issue.

All given what I have invested, vs performance I'm about 2-3 time ahead of the curve or more.

can't wait to get this in the air.

Hi everyone!

I know that it has been a while since someone posts here, but my wife offered me the older version of the Seagull EDGE 540 (SEA1025) mid last year ...can't complaint! :D

I had some other projects in hands, so I only got the plane ready to fly know, or almost ready. Before I try a new model I like to check the wing incidences, and for my surprise I had -1.5 deg for a 0 deg horizontal tail! On the ground (3 wheels) the wing has only 4 deg, which I think it's to low for a smooth landing.

That was when I begun to worry I little bit and I decided to check the in internet if someone had that problem before.

So I found this post in RC Universe and after reading the entire post [sm=bananahead.gif] I decided to join the forum to try to have some feedback from other owners of this model.

Here's my edge equipment
Engine: OS 91FX
Propeller: APC 15x6
Receiver: Futaba R149DP - 9-Channel PCM
Servos: Wing -> 2 x S3004 (56.9 oz-in. @ 6V)
Elevator -> 2 x S3004
Rudder -> 2 x S3004
Engine -> 1 x S3004
Battery: 6V
Fuel tank: 13.5 oz (the one that came with the airplane was to small in my opinion)

Before I glued the 2 half wings together I reinforced dihedral brace with a aluminum bar (2mm) along the entire length of the brace.
I also noticed that the vertical stabilizer wasn't big enough, according to the real aircraft, so I build a new one up to scale and 2mm thicker than the previous one.

The horizontal stabilizer seemed to be constructed from hard balsa, so I wasn't worried about it, until I read this post. [&:]

I know that my model have some little differences from most of yours, but I was wondering if I could have some feedback from you, specially about the wing incidence and the landing speed/flare; and if I should install flying wire in the tail.

Any other comments/opinions are welcome.

Still haven't got the thing in the air, (been messing with Heli's and wanted to feel more confident on sim)

need some help on final build steps. Bought planes used (one V1 and one V2) both are in good condition.

What I know I need to do is install engine, servos, set incidence, balance, TX setup) Can anyone help that's local?

a little more info

Well it's kind of difficult to be very specific since I haven't been in the hobby too long. The planes are built and have flown before as mentioned, got them used but they appear to be airworthy. I'd get in touch with the sellers but neither are in Houston.

What I need to do is to install servos (might have to repair a servo mount or two), linkages. Once done, I need to have the (correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the term is incidence) checked, balance. My main issue is getting the engine setup and TX setup.


Been so long since I've even looked at the planes...........Just got to take a look at them both and decided I want to get the V2 up and flying...it needs the least amount of work.

I think all I need is servos mounted, balanced, set the control surfaces properly, get engine tuned/setup, and the TX setup- I haven't had the luxury of setting up a computer radio for an airplane (have the DX7).

I haven't decided if I'm going with Jr NES 517 or Jr DS821 for aileron and elevator...jury out on rudder, throttle depends on if I use digital or analog (heard I shouldn't mix the two)... in either case it will be 517 or 821 (just happen to have them around).

V2: Engine: YS- FZ 91 (mounted) forgot about that. Engine has been sitting and needs to be started, gone through, tuned etc.


V1. needs servo trays; flying wires; engine mounted, linkages. and from what I hear about this version maybe the wing needs to have the covering removed to checkout the bracing (Dihedral i believe is where problems have shown up).

2 engines:
Engines-
Used and in need of cleaning, setup etcYS- FZ 91.
YS- FZ 110 "supercharged"...doesn't appear to be the S version. Eventually I want this in the V2 but that can wait till the 91 isn't enough for me.

Somebody here needs to give this fella the info to contact the Bomber field club(s), he's right near them. I live in San Antonio and I do have the V2 540 finished, I've published a lot of photos and building progress posts here in the forums under Seagull Edge 540 V2, I believe. What a nice flying plane. Mine came out what I thought might be a pound or two heavy (a lot of extra weight I thought for a plane this size), and instead of needing flaps I had to turn them off just to get it to land and not float past the whole runway.

If there is anything I can tell you in regards to mine, I'll tell you what I know and I have some photos of many different parts of the build. I can take some if needed.
