27X10 Menz S

Hey Dick the 3W 100 is a real engine of coarse you get what yah pay for!! Like Outlaw said your a little brutal. I know what my Tach read and it wasn't B!!!

Hmm, 8,000 rpm on the old 3W-100 with a 27x10?
Mine "only" turns a Mejzlik 27x10 at 6400 rpm.
Haven't ever seen a non-TOC version turn very much stronger.

I bet a lot of guys at your field like to borrow your "happy tach".
Makes their engines seem so much more powerful....

Seriously....8,000 rpm with a 27" prop would make the loudest ripping prop noise you can imagine on the ground. Your ears would still be bleeding from pointing the tach at it.

Even a DA-150 or 3W-150 QS-TOC could not turn a 27x10 prop at 8000 rpm. It requires about 19.4 HP to turn that rpm according to thrust calculator (and that's close enough for government work).

Nice thing about the BME100 in the sukhoi...no cowl cutting. I would hate to see spark plugs sticking out the side of that cowl!

I cut holes -even if they don't stick thru-
makes it easy to do a plug check

Say Dick:
Did you ever get a chance to test out that ZDZ-100?
So far, I haven't seen a single report from an owner.

I'm joining in with this Sukhoi deal! I'm going to use a ZDZ 80 single in it. I am wondering if I really should do what Dick did to the tail... I would like to see a few pics of it.

Dick Hanson, do you already know about the ZDZ100 recall?

Where you able to put any time on the motor? Did you notice any problems? Too bad this engine seems pretty good for the price and was gonna order one for a H9 Cap. Did you get a refund or waiting for the revised version.

I have run my zdz 100 on my own mufflers which are made from aerosol cans and the engine ran fine. The cans are 9"longx2.25dia with a 1"dia. header and 1/2"dia. outlet. I am getting 6000rpm's on 40/1 synthetic with a 26x10 menzs standard after a 1/2 hour run on it. I didn't run it for more than a few seconds at full throttle since it's not broken-in yet, but it looks like it will be a very good engine. It will probably gain 4 to 500 rpm's after a proper break-in as my 80"s did and I think It should turn a 27x10 Menzs/S without any problems. The engine runs very smooth and cool. It has a very good throttle response and should have good torque. I have also fitted it into my H9 Sukhoi and hope to fly it when spring time comes. Don't forget guys, this is a long stroke engine so this means they run lower rpm's but give more torque. I hope to run it more as soon as the temperature warms up a little and I will post my findings when I can.
I would like to here about your readings Dick if you don't mind. I am very interested in what you come up with and what your set-ups are as well.
Good luck and have fun !!

Being a bit of an engine freako (I drive a Ford powered Volvo), I elected to keep my 100 -to see what was "UP" with it.
I could see why RCS elected to do the recall- performance on smaller mufflers , simply was not what was expected.
Inasmuch as I personally do not use smaller mufflers - I thought I would -on my own hook, poke around
Once I got it loosened up - I tried a wide variety of exhaust setups - on my test stand-
The results were interesting.
this engine was designed to maximize the power potential of large, longer tune systems - these are popular --in Europe but not that common here
On these setups -this engine is very strong -yet -very docile!
Not in the least bit peaky in midrange.
Totally unlike the fussy pipe setups I knew and hated in the past -on my pattern models.
JMB quiet canister setups which work extremely well on my other ZDZ engines (my 210 and JMB cans, is VERY strong) still did not seem to be bringing up full power potential.-
So----- to put it in simple terms - -the engine is tuned for pipes which raise the TORQUE level
And ZDZ did the best job at this I have ever seen.
The catch?
If you don't use those, you may not get the performance you anticipated.
At the risk of raising some eyebrows - I have to say that the increased performance using the large tuned setups , provides performance that is better than any 100 size engine I know of.
It is - notably better than my best ZDZ80 singles -on pipes - which as about as good as most current 100 twin engines.
I have asked RCS about this - they were very concerned that this engine, also perform well for the avg modeler- so they did the recall and the ZDZ people are working on it.
I am confidant it will all turn out well.

A Fix For Your Problem !

That's too bad Dick, My 3W 100 is still turning a Strong 8,000 with the 3W 27X10. I quess you are the one with a problem and it starts with a B

8000 rpm with 27" is... rippy...

By the way, I flew my Sukhoi with the 80, it is awesome. I honestly love it much more than I loved the Cap.

No, not really.
8000 rpm with 27" is BS.

I've got two 3W-100 motors, and have tached quite a few others. On that prop...figure about 6400 rpm, about the same for a DA-100.

I was saying that, but in a nice way... I think it said 6000 and it looked like 8000

Having run 3W props - I recall that they rev more easily then the Menz S--in same sizes - typical result.
The 27x10 MenzS props -on my 80's (ZDZ) run in the low 6000 range - ( 6200/6300)- but again we are up at 4500 ft .
The Bambula 26x10 loads more-than the 27x10 MenzS
We tried em - passed em around on a couple of DA100's -just to see and it was the same thing -
We see a fair amount of ZDZ and DA engines here - so we get a chance to see what props and relative engine setups really do.
The nice part of it is that when an "incredible " performance figure is mentioned - it is quite easy to sort and file it --

Hi dick
How did the zdz work out this summer? I have one of the new zdz 100s and I an currently putting my su 31 together. What insights can you pass on to me?
Thanks.
