hanger9 corsair dummy engine question
 

hi just about to start the build of my first war plane and i really want to make it as scale as pos i used to paint small models by hand my question is can i use acrylic paint on the dummy engine ? if not what should i use

Arcylic paint will fine but it is not fuel proof. I did my dummy radial with arcylic and it came out fine. I'll try and post some pictures later. Just remember tofuelproof the paint.

thanks i have a spry on varnish i think that will do the job to fule proof it what did you use .some one at work to day told me there was a real corsair based at shoram air field in east sussex i will find out for shore and if so go along and see if i can take some pics
also as for the fire wall and wing section i am going to soake them in super glue in the hope that it will hold them better still there is no rush i feel the bummy engine is a good place to start

ensteadof super glue use 30 min expoxie thined with rubbing alcohol ! it will steathen it as well as fuel proof it better and for your dummy engine use the testors hobby paint and spray it with clear coat . and it will last forever

I've started on my H9 corsair and decided to use the Top Flite dummy radial engine. It looks much more scale than the Hangar 9 radial. I used acrylic hobby paints and finished it with several coats of Lustrecote clear for fuel-proofing. Check it out:

NICE! Did you use two different colors of paint on the cylinders? Or, did you do some kind of a wash to get the darker gray?

I used two different shades of gray on the cylinders, and the crankcase is a third shade. All of the gray paint was brushed on using Testors Acryl for plastic models. The silver on the valve covers is Testors enamel. The black background and the clear are Lustrekote spray paint by Top Flite. The pushrod tubes that came with the dummy engine were too big, so I used 3/32" wooden dowels blacked out with a magic marker and heat shrink tubing on the ends. I gave everything several coats of the clear to fuel-proof it, but only time will tell if it will hold up. I don't see a problem, since there shouldn't be any reason for fuel to get on the front painted part of the engine.

Sorry I did not post earlier, my computer would not upload files tonight I just uploaded some pics so let me try again. I used testors acrylic paints three shades of grey and silver on the heads.

hi i opted out of useing acrylic and whent with enamel in the hope it will be more fule proof i used in the end (tamiya black)(tamiya light blue luftwaffe) and revell cooper,steel and silver numbers 93,91,90 i still have the urge to do more to it but i noticed when it is in the cowl you lose a lot of the detail so i ask myself is it worth it but still it will look good behind a nice 3 bladed prop here is some pics
what engines did you guys use what would be a good 2 stroke for this plane i know the saito 100 would be the one what with a good sound from it but at £250 that a lot any help would be great thanks

Here is my stock H9 dummy radial painted with Model Master Acryl, followed by two coats of LustreKote flat clear. Note that LustreKote cannot withstand 20% or more nitro.

On my H9 F2G-2, I decided to go with a printed photo of the actual radial since the F2G-2 is powered by a P&W R-4360 Wasp Major 28-cylinder 4-row radial, with 7 cylinders showing at the front instead of the usual 9.

I made it to size and glued it onto a piece of plywood cut to fit the front cowl opening.

My photo file won't work for your stock H9 Corsair as the stock Corsair uses the P&W R-2800 engine with 9 cylinders at the front.

Richard, you mentioned elsewhere about a Kyosho dummy engine fitting better in a Corsair but I'm not getting much in searches, would you have a picutre of it handy? Or where else to look for a detailed one for my 60 Corsair. Thanks

Uh, I never mentioned that. The Kyosho Corsair is a smaller plane with a smaller cowl, so the dummy engine made for it will be too small for the H9 Corsair. There is no problem fitting the stock H9 radial engine into the stock H9 Corsair cowl.

'Fred, I am not using any dummy radial engine. I also have a Top Flite 1/8 scale dummy, but it's too big in diameter and won't fit without trimming away the valve covers. The dummy radial engine for the Kyosho Corsair is slightly smaller and will fit better, but it still requires some cutting. The dummy engine you see above is just a picture of the real Pratt & Whitney R2800 printed out on decal paper and pasted on 3/32" ply. That's why I said it's "cheap and cheesy". Spinner is Tru-Turn 1-1/4" prop hub. '

Richard , thanks, it was a topic on CMP Hellcat a year ago and after rereading it my apologies, you were talking about it fitting in the Hellcat.

I have the TF 60 Corsair and just wanted a more detailed dummy engine.

Paul, I don't care if it's wrong or not, I'd photo shop it to size to stick in my VQ Texan... No one I know will know it ain't right.
Could you reveal you source? Cliff
