Noise in Venus .40
 

I just started breaking in my new Venus .40 and it has an extreme control rod rattle in the tail cone about half throttle. Anyone have any hints on stopping this? It is louder than the engine( Super Tigre .61)!

Is this a kit that you built? Wondering how you ran the rods down the fuselage since it sounds completely built.

Breaking in a new engine on a test stand is the best way to do it. New engines have a lot of vibration, as you noticed, and should smooth out some as it breaks in. Breaking in on a plane usually punishes the glue joints, electronics, and servos. What kind of engine are you running?

It is a Super Tigre .61. The plane is an arf. The tubes were already installed and I just had to put the steel rods in. I don't think the noise will subside it is just too loud.

I have a Venus too, and got this weird sound too, until I change the steel rod for standard yellow nylon control rod.

The sound is "normal" on the Venus, but not good for a long time. Sound come from your 3 controls steel rods vibrating in the plastic tube. Your steel rods are 1/8" and the plastic tube not far from 1/4" round! You can replace your steel rod by standard yellow or gray Nylon control rod, no more play. Or by carbon control rod or just put some "nylon spacers" on your steel rod every 4". It will remove the rod vibration.

The tubes are supported, it is the rods reverberating inside of the tubes.

I flew a Venus 40 for 2 years with no "noise in the tail" problems. But then, I had an OS 46FX in it. Even if ny-rod does away with the noise, think about the vibration that will still be going on back there. So what can be done to eliminate the problem and not just the symptom? [sm=confused.gif]

It's not really a problem. The noise and vibration comes from the engine vibration. You can simply remove the play between the guide tube and the steel rod by installing some spacers. This is a part of the problem, and removing the play it’s a part of the solution!

Engine makes vibration and it's normal. RPM variation will make more or less vibration, if you have loose parts on the airplane (control rod, for example), there is a big chance to get noise! They also noise coming from the play between the wheel hubs on the bolt axle.....

Just balance your prop, add spacers to control rod, that’s it, or remove the vibration source by converting the plane to electric!!!

Nexxa is correct. Cut the yellow innards from a nyrod into 1/8" spacers and slide them on your control rod every 6 inches or so. Rattling will stop.

Thanks for the help. I installed 4 spacers per rod and drastically reduced the noise to tolerable. Flew the plane twice today with no problems. This is my first pattern plane so I was a bit apprehensive but had no problems...
