If this has been discussed to death, forgive me. But I couldn't find much in the way of a search regarding combos for this plane. Dave Patrick's site mainly focuses on Y.S. engines. I Like 2 stroke engines for aerobatic planes, and was leaning towards the O.S. 1.60 FX ringed engine. Does anyone have this combo, or know of it, and if anyone has a better idea of what works well with this plane for all around performance please post it. I'd appreciate it. Pros and con's would also be great so we at least know why one prefers something over another.
Dave.

i have had the following on mine:

satio 180
RCS 1.4 gasser
now OS-180 swinging an 18 x 6 mejzlik

this is the motor to have on this beast for all out power and then some. The satio 180 was all it needed at 2.7 HP. the os is 3.7hp. mine would t-roll with the satio 180 but i do love the os-160 as it swings a bigger prop with out going up in nitro....

Hi tat2ist,

Don't laugh, but I'm actually going to install a Saito 120 on my new Ultimate 120. I'm hoping that by keeping the weight down with mini-aileron servos, a smaller receiver battery and 16oz gas tank, it will perform as well as a higher powered one with all the extras. I'll let you know how it works out...

I had the OS 1.60 in mine and it flew it very well. I have since traded the bipe for a Creek Staudacher that I hope to have in the air next weekend. The only prop I tried on the engine was a Zniger 18x6 which I've read it the worst prop for this engine. But even at 8100 rpm, it would take the Ultimate straight up from takeoff and go as long as you wanted it to. The OS is a great running engine and a good combo for the plane.

i loved them all for different reason the gaser being the after i am finished flying for the day and very little clean up!!
The glow for just the power of having unlimted verticle and any thing else that required power T-rolls.

The rcs 1.4 has the power of a 120 and i never would have bought a glow 120 when you can have a OS-160 or satio 180 and pick up all the power with only 1-2 oz more weight. The 1.4 did not have unlimted verticle 300 ft. ceiling at best. She runs like a dream if you dont try the r-rolls. she would still do all the other moves rolling elevator, harrier, flat spins, spins, knife edge and scale flying with the 1.4 i needed more power for the unlines 2 point rolls was all she was good for then she would run out of steam. The 1.4 will be installed in the upcoming weeks on the in the bones funtana that i am working on.

I put a Saito 1.80 on mine. I too was trying to decide between the Saito and the OS 1.60 and the 1.80 won out mostly because I really like the sound and I can put a 3 blade 17/8 on it. It was a tough decision though, I love OS engines for their quality. Have an OS1.08 that ran like a swiss watch for 7 years and it's still good. I'm hoping I made the right choice.
BTW- my DP ultimate with the Saito (20 grams lighter than the 1.20) , hs5245's in the wings (1 oz each) and 16 oz tank, weighs 12 lbs dry. I don't know how it could possably weigh only the 10.5 advertised.

Easy, you fill all the empty cavities in the fuse and wings with helium! I think manufacturers should start putting that statement in the specs. I just finished a Creek hobbies Staudacher. I think they are supposed to weigh around 10.5-11.5 lbs. If you weighed all the components separately, you might hit that weight. But they don't mention the pound of nose weight you have to add to make the thing balance.

Really, the servos should be mounted in the wing bay of these planes instead of the tail. I assume the manufacturer know this. Why don't they build the kit for this configuration?

mine weighed 12 3/4 lbs with the RCS 1.4 and a 600 and 1100 batteries. Now i weigh 12 7/8 with the os-160 with the jett muffler 18 x 6 apc or mejzlik and a 2700 NMhi battery. i went bigger with the battery so i picked up some weight there even though i got rid of one battery and picked up a heavier prop....

Thanks to everyone who sumbitted so far. Keep any info coming. I hear alot of people running the saito 1.80, but that thing drinks fuel like crazy. Not the cost I'm worried about, it's flight time, and fuel weight of a larger tank. thanks
Dave.

Maybe the Helium was in the small print! I had a Goldberg ultimate that weighed 10# with a YS 1.20 that would torque roll at 3/4 throttle but wanted more so I got the 1.80 thinking at 10.5# the DP Ultimate would be much much fun. I think it still will be at 12#(first flight is scheduled for tomorrow) but it would have required 30% nitro with the 1.20. I too heard that the 1.80 drinks fuel but figured that (1) I won't be at full throttle very much. (2) I won't need 30% heli fuel. (3) It's going to be FUN!
Running rich (needle valve open 3.5 turns) and turning at 7K rpm during the final tank of breaking in the Saito 1.80 it used 11 oz in 6 min. At a richer setting and 5K rpm I got 9 min on 11 oz. I need to time the motor runs some more to see what kind of flight time I'll get, 8 min with reserve would be good.

Has anyone tried running a RCV 120 in this bird?

Maudib 02-01-2003 10:21 PM

Go with the 1.60

I have a YS120 in mine now and and have a 1.60 in a SIG Cap 231... It weighs around 14 lbs and has unlimited vertical...

I've made up my mind from all I've read here to pull the YS120 and put in the 1.60... The 1.20 did not have unlimited at all..

What a sweet plane overall tho... My fav bigger plane so far...

We'll see how that stands after an AW 33% Edge 540T and my "getting there" Mile's Reed Weeks Solution XX...

You could try a header kit with a flexible pipe...

Or mount inverted...

saito 1.80 in DP ultimate

I used a slimline pitts style muffler. Part # 4006 and It fits perfect.

Where did you get the muffler?

I got the Slimline 4 stroke pitts muffler at Sheldons hobbies - www.sheldonshobbies.com. I live a few miles from them. Their actual store is better than their web site. The muffler is $50 which is a good price. You might want to get the 1/2" ID exhaust stack made by Aerotrend (Sheldons has it, part # AER1025) to help keep the oil off the aircraft. Attached them to the muffler tubes with cable ties. I can attach a picture of my setup if you like.

Have fun!

What about the Moki? I put the Moki 135 in mine..... I just love the price of FAI type fuel and this thing should produce some power..... anyone running this setup? I got a Bison Pitts on it too, does this do anything for performance on the Moki?

How much is the FAI fuel per gallon?
Ohh, How are harriers and elavators on this plane?

Thanks,
Mike

the fuel runs about 6-7 bucks a gallon, the plane should have great 3d potential from what I hear

A guy at our field has the Moki 1.35 on his. It flies great! Much better than I thought that engine would pull the plane. Not too sure about 3D stuff, but it seems to have plenty of power.

An engine that is often over-looked for the kind of application described is the Thunder Tiger 1.20 (actually 1.27). I equate its performance with many 1.40 engines. For example: one of my TT 1.20's is currently running in a H9 78", 12 1/2 pound Edge with a APC 17 x 6 (erroneously not listed but available) turning 9,000-9,200 rpm using FAI fuel. Tho not unlimited vertical, it will pull up out of a torque roll. The standard muffler with the lateral mounting adapter will not fit inside the Ultimate's engine cowl. A Bisson would be more appropriate.

Hope this helps with your decision.

DGO

I thought unlimited vertical was the ability to pull more than it's own weight... i.e. "pull out of a torque roll"

If a plane can pull out of situation whereas there is no vertical motion, what stops it somewhere else higher and makes it fall out?

So far, in my experience, every plane that can pull out of a hover or torque roll also had unlimited vertical...

Now the two words that cn make the difference is... with authority..

Does it scratch and claw it's way out, or does it accelerate briskly and zoom, zoom, zoom...

Based on all I've read here... I put the O.S. 1.60 in mine.... I want the zoom...
