RE: C-160 Transall

I have the Transall and have had a couple of flights with it. I am using an OS 30 four stroke. More than enough power, I think an OS 26 is enough. Fly it at half or less throttle for scale flying. Because of the landing gear, it would be better to land on a road surface.

Takeoff and landing are easy. A beginner can do it. It is really just a high wing trainer. Turning in the air needs a bit of rudder. Broke my main landing gear on landing on a rough surface.

It balance well with the OS 30's. I just placed the batteries near the front.

GSP knows they have a bad rep and it doesn't matter to them at all. They keep selling kits so why would it matter to them?

Like the guy on Inside RC sez ... "Never buy any RC products if they don't have replacement parts." ... or something to that effect. Good advice.
Any long time heli pilot will tell you that the GSP org doesnt give a crap about customer service. All they want is your $$$ and someone must be giving it to them. They have been around for years.
I just received this ARF as a gift. I must say that the glass and wood work is second to none. That hardware and instructions are junk.
I love GSP's disclaimer:

"The nature of an ARF is such that it may not meet your standards of strength in critical areas. It is up to you, the modeler, to decide if the stress points will meet your standards of strength based on your flying style. This pertains particularly to the firewall and landing gear areas. It is recommended that you re-epoxy and fiberglass this area"

or

"Do not use the "CA" type hinges already included in some of the kits, these are only here for position. Use your favorite CA or pinned hinge instead"

This is so darn funny! Talk about weaseling out of standing behind your product!!!

A friend has tried to get spare parts for a different kit. All they would is sell him another kit!
My LHS called to become a dealer. After 5 minutes of GSP's trash talk, my LHS hung up!

I am working on getting one of these GSP C-160's in the air. I bought it in spite of all the warnings here...Bad on me[:o]
I have been waiting 2 weeks now for replacement landing gear because the ones that came in the kit were not manufactured correct. Maybe I am as hard headed as my dad used to say. Anyway, the CG on the instructions say 63-68 mm. I assume this is with the tanks empty....From all of you that are flying is this correct? It seems to me it should be a little farther back.. Thanks for all the great post and info here...I guess now I just have to listen.

RE: C-160 Transall

I also have a c160 that I am nearly finished with. I am using a pair of OS 30 four strokes. I will post some pics this weekend hopefully.

Mine is the camo version with the balsa built up wings. I will use German markings on mine. If you do some research on this plane, it was built by the French and primarily used by the french and germans. It was not used by the USA. I mention this in case someone wants to add their own markings. For authenticity, you may want to look into non-USA markings.

Do a search on yahoo for c160 transall and there are plenty of pictures available of real ones.
I actually found a picture of a real c160 that had German markings that were nearly identical to the Major Decals WW1 decal set, so I plan on using those. Ordered a set through tower hobbies.

Can't wait to fly it. The pressure is on for me to finish in a few weeks for our clubs "mall show".

"Twins".............. Know what your getting into. Some guys have the best of luck with them, others dont. [ voice of experience ] You need to be really good at tuning engines. You dont try to match them in sound, the need to be adjusted individually. If you dont, plan on taking the plane home in a trash bag. Those engines have to be running perfect separately. You can hit it off right at the start of the flying day or it can be an all day affair. I have four twin engine aircraft and just because of the extra engine it takes extra time to make them work right. Other guys will say not so, but I would'nt be typing this if it was'nt happening to me. And luck has nothing to do with your engines running smoothly. Try the C-160 and see how it works out for you. I really want you to have a good time working your way into twins. Good luck to you! MJS

Well,
I am well underway on my C160. I am trying to complete by our clubs show at the mall. I have used decals from major decals on mine. I found a picture of a plane from the German army that had very similar markings.

I have mounted my OS 30 four strokes inverted. I am a little concerned about not getting enough airflow to the carbs, which are burried deep inside the nacelles. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Here are some pics of the plane.

Here is the pics of the German C160 transall that I found on the net. I am "loosely" using this as a reference for markings on mine posted above.

Here is mine. This plane came with the built up wing which I assume is stronger.
Now all I need is for the weather to break.

kkshazzam: i like that color scheme too. I thought about ordering that one but ended up getting the camo version instead. It sure looks nice though. Probably easier to see than mine.

have you guys have any problems with GSP on the purchase, I really want one bad but am having a hard time giving money to those people.. [:@]

RE: C-160 Transall

DiabloKid: I have not had any problems with my GSP. They get a bad rap here on these boards but there are also alot of people that are happy with them. Unfortunately, I have found that people post alot of negatives here about certain companies which I don't necessarily agree with. Anyways::

The kit came in good shape and all the parts were there. I purchased a pair of OS 30 four stroke engines from GSP too for a great price. They sold me the engines for $30 cheaper than tower for the pair. They also gave me a great price on the plane since I bought the engines.
The plane went together nicely. All the components are good quality and everything fits great. I have not flown it yet, still finishing it.

I know there are comments from people as far as having a difficult time getting replacement parts. My philosophy is not to crash the plane so that I never need any replacement parts. If I crash, I usually don't try and repair it anyways. As far as the replacement parts being expensive and/or difficult to obtain, I think that is somewhat true for most planes. For example, I just purchased a Great Planes Stuka from Tower. The ARF was $229. They want $110 for a wing set, which is 1/2 the cost of a new plane. Therefore, I don't think it is unreasonable for GSP to charge $200 for a transall wing when you consider the kit sells for $300.

By the way, if you want to bypass GSP, there is a place on ebay that sells all the same kits. THey may offer better customer service.

RE: C-160 Transall

I havent had a problem giving them money. They love to take it.
I have had many problems getting support from them after I did it!
I bought their Super Decathelon. It came with two of the same wing tips.
The owner said he couldnt help me because if he did, then he would have a kit that he couldnt sell.
Then he said I could buy a new kit.
A friend bought a PT-19. It came without a cowl. They said 3 months to get one or buy another kit.

RE: C-160 Transall

Well I know I am new here and nobody has giving me any input about CG I had asked earlier. However, GSP has been very helpful in getting my plane together. As I mentioned earlier, the landing gear came damage. I have a new set now and I look forward to getting it in the air. So I have to give GSP a thumbs up for now.....

Has anyone ever sprayed paint over their c160? I was thinking about spraying my camo plane with flat clear top flight lustercoat to protect the decals. ANy thoughts?

kkshazzam 02-16-2004 08:34 AM

RE: RE: C-160 Transall

The camo coverite type finish takes the paint very well

RE: C-160 Transall

Cool,
I want to protect the decals and stuff by spraying flat clear.

The one big mistake I already made was to run the engines before I did this. What would you suggest using to totally get all the oil and fuel residue off the plane before I spray it? I thought maybe rubbing alcohol on a rag would work. Any other thought?

kkshazzam 02-19-2004 08:17 AM

RE: C-160 Transall

Not good!
I would start with alcohol but the problem is that you wont know until you spray.
If you scrub too hard the paint will start to come off.

sbaugz 02-19-2004 05:27 PM

RE: C-160 Transall

you are probably right. I am almost better off not attempting to spray it flat clear. My luck, it would not take because of the oil residue.

RE: RE: C-160 Transall

I ordered a Swallow form GSP and it arrived without problems, I send and e-mail first to meake sure they have the plane in stock.
I think the gripe with the company is for the lack of spare parts, they tend to sell the plane and that is it no extra wings or fuses.. i am about to call for an extra cowling for my Swallow.
Some of the models are made by China Model Products I think GSp is their sole US distributor

I flew mine this past weekend.
The plane has absolutely no bad habits.
It looks better doing low fly bys but will loop and roll like a sport plane.
The short, stiff landing gear and fast approach speed can make landings a little trickey but nothing a sport pilot couldnt handle.
Here is a video of mine if you are interested.
