World Models covering material
 

[8D]I have a World Star 40 with about twenty flights on it. After every flying session I have to patch little holes in the covering material. Doesn't seem to have very much puncture resistance. Other than this problem I am very pleased with both the construction and flying of this model. Is this common to all World Models planes? I am interested in the Super Chipmonk, but am worried about the covering material.

I have had 2 Chippies, 1 CAP 232, 2 Super Sport, 2 Sky Raider Mach 2 ... never had any problems with covering puncturing other than because of pebbles that are picked up, that is pretty normal for any plane.

if you are flying off a sealed runway most probely getting done by pebbles be flicked up by the prop

I'm not sure who's material it is, but my Extra 330 takes a heat gun like it's monokote. A lot of heat is required to take out the wrinkles.

some wm planes are toughlon but the chippie is not at least mine isnt, I think its monokote or something pretty close to it. You will definately like the chipmunk

I bought my third WM T-34 in mid July, 2005. The covering did exactly what you describe. Small puncture holes plus the covering started coming loose. I recovered the wings and tail last month because of all this. My first T-34 (bought in late 90s) lasted about 5 years, 800+ flights and the covering was still in decent shape when a servo failed. Since I am flying at the same location, same fuel, etc. WM must have gone to a different covering, at least on this plane.

On the other hand, my current WM P-51 46 size covering is doing OK except some of the seams came loose. I went back over them with some thinned epoxy.

My world models super chip has beautiful covering. it has sat in my garage over the winter with temps fluctuating over 20 degrees and has only a few small wrinkles. I have had great luck with WM planes.

I'll echo Flyboy's comments. The covering on my WM Chippy gets a few wrinkles from time to time, but nothing a heat gun won't fix. Good covering, great plane.

The WM planes use 2 types of covering. Lightex and Toughlon. Lightex as the name suggst is light and used often in electric models and trainer, the part # starts with SGX...... your World Star uses Lightex. Touglon is an altogether different animal and is a much more durable covering. The Chipmunk uses this type of covering, part # starts with STL..... You should have no problems with the Chipmunk.Check for yourself....

[8D]Thanks for the information about the two types of covering material. Think that I will stick with the heavier covering material models in the future. The web site you referenced is very helpful. Unfortunately, the World Star is no more since I lost it in the sun and by the time I found it it was vertical about three feet off the ground. Never had one so totally destroyed, but it was not the planes fault in any way. As I was junking he remains I was very impressed with the design and construction quality. World seems to build good stuff.
