Now, here is an airplane that will make a freight train take a dirt road! I sure hope it flies good, even its mother has went into hiding!

I'll second that one.
My buddy has one, (YS-56 on it) and damn, it is just fugly sitting on a bench, HUGE tail end on that thing.... it sure is freight-train-heavy.
We're waiting for good weather, better than the the 10F we've been getting so far, to fly the "monster".

If you want to pick a cropduster agplane as ugly...then I believe this one fits the bill. A Transavia PL-12 Airtruck cropduster. The fugliest of the fugly....in my opinion. When that canopy door opens, I expect an ugly little green alien to hop out....:D

I'm not sure this is an ARF...but whatever it is ....isn't it a sight?

Now I really have a hard time calling ANY airplane ugly
as it is definitely "function before form" when it comes to
aircraft design but, that Airtruck doesn't even look safe![X(]

VERY interesting design to say the least! Never seen one before. :D[8D]

Vasek - Hahahaahahaaa ... that came to my mind too! I have to say the Seagull Harrier is not that ugly and neither is the CMPro Jug. :P

I have several of the Harrier ARFs in 90 and the smaller one. It just goes to show how our tastes vary from modeler to modeler. I'm a sucker for high performance, slow flying models (I refuse to call them "3D" models) that have any color of transparent plastic covering on open structure wings, but especially blue transparent covering.

I like the P-47 too.

We had one fellow in our club back in the 70's early 80's (hi Tony Smuz) that always bought from the weirdo hobbyshops such as Polk's and, weird back then, Hobby Lobby (I buy from Hobby Lobby now - but I've always been a weirdo). Tony was a pioneer in electric flight. I wonder if he still flies electric? Anyone in Pinellas County, FL, know Tony?

I just don't like the style/look of it. I never saw a Pawnee until I saw that ARF come out. The canopy and top wing supports just look wierd to me. To each his own. The other "ugly" ARFs listed above don't look that bad to me (except for that hideous dog photo)!

---------------

Then you must really hate the WWII German Junkers JU-87. I always thought that plane had somehow snuck into the Agwagon's hanger and sired a pup with a Cherokee.

Form follows function. I'm a real stickler for that saying. Must be my German blood. My Irish blood is in the sack sleeping it off. <G>

Pawnees should be all yellow. Then they are just funky enough to be cool.

Jim
I put my order in for a Pawnee and I also felt it should be yellow. When I started researching them though, I found a few yellow ones but most were a white base color with an accent, often red. I guess the white/teal is actually believable after doing a Google image search. I'm used to seeing yellow crop dusters but I guess they are mostly Ag Wagons, Ag Trucks, Ag Cats, etc.

I agree that it is sorta ugly in a good way. The goofy looking canopy is that way for a reason.

Myself, I would be expecting Mel Gibson . . . ever seen the "Mad Max" movies? They used the fullsize of this in one of those . . . quite an interesting plane, at least to me . . . didn't know anyone was modeling it. Who, pray tell, makes this one?

THE GUY WHO BUILT IT IS IN THE CROPDUSTERTHREAD EARLY ON. THE PLANE LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD BE MORE AT HOME IN A STAR TREK MOVIE THAN OVER A FARMER'S FIELD. WHERE'S THE HOPPER ON THIS THING??...IT CAN'T POSSIBLY HOLD MUCH. ANYWAY, THAT'S MY OPINION. DON'T WANT TO OFFEND THE GUY WHO BUILT IT SO IF HE'S READING THIS....THIS IS ALL IN FUN.:D

Here is my vote. The ugliest 310 for awhile.
That's the "new" version... compared to the "old" version the one you put up looks somewhat presentable.

The old version looked a bit like a 310 made from big legos... Ick!

Very true.

I always thought the Lockheed Lightning was rather attractive if not a little unusual until I saw these... Neither one does it any justice.

this is a reply to the comments about polk hobby planes.

polks use to be located in nyc and was a 3 floor hobby shop that would spin any kid like myself into a tizzy.

over the years i moved to nj and polks moved there as well.i never went to the new store but called a few weeks ago for a simple crystal for a hitec rec. the gentleman was kinda rude to me because i wasnt using their beloved tracker radio.

i too think the planes kinda blah.

i want the o;d store back lol

sorry for rambleing[sm=bananahead.gif]

Transavia PL-12 Airtruck cropduster.

The whole center section is the hopper on that beast. Pilot sits above the hopper. That's why it's looks so strange. The way the wings and tail is designed is so that the airframe puts off a HUGE wake. That way it gets maximum dispersal of whatever it's spraying.

jrf 02-17-2008 12:16 PM

RE: ugliest ARF (?)

I read that the tail is done that way so that they can load the hopper by backing a truck between the stabs and load the hopper directly through a hatch at the top rear of the fuselage. Saves a lot of turnaround time over loading through a hose.

Ouch, that hurts.....I'm with Ed, I love the harrier 90. I have one I'm building and bought two more as spares since they're somewhat hard to come by.

When chord approaches span or the main landing gear moves forward of the L.E. (on certain designs) its easy to achieve ugliness.

I wonder if anyone agrees with me that these planes you mention are the 'function before beauty' type of aircraft. These short little square winged planes can do wild and ammazing things that the big long winged beauties wouldn't dare attempt. Some of these planes don't even have a canopy or pilot's cockpit...but they're a blast to fly. Who's with me?
