VQ Models Mig 3 Build
 

Hello All,

I have some pictures of my build, it was a very straight forward build, easy to follow instructions even a newcomer will be able to put it together, instructions recommend a 2 stroke .40 to .46 or a 4 stroke .60 to .70, so I decided on the 4 stroke, an OS .70 Surpass II.
With the 4 stroke it was VERY nose heavy so I decided to install the battery plus about an ounce of lead all the way on the back.
I made a hatch under the fuselage, I glued some balsa in front of the battery so it would not move forward and there is velcro as well to hold it down...check out the picture. It balanced just a little bit nose heavy, and it flew great.
A couple of changes, first I changed the fuel tank to a Hayes 12 oz, the supplied tank looked very small, second I added a couple of spacer blocks under the wing hold-down bolts.
It is a very easy model to fly, I am having lots of fun with it, plus because it is not as popular as the rest of the warbirds I am always being asked..."what is this?" :D

That is one fine looking aircraft! What is the overall weight ready to fly? Also, are those the stock retracts? If so, are they very good? Thanks, Rich.

Excellent! I'd be interested in hearing about the retracts also. Does it fly heavy, like most warbirds? The last time I saw a model Mig 3 was a scratch build about this size in 1980. It flew exactly once, entering a tip stall on its first turn and spiraling in to destruction. I believe he spent over a year designing and building. ARFs have their advantages :)

Looks very nice! A couple of questions:

Did the stainless steel socket head cap screws come in the kit?

Did the interior wood come varnished from the factory?

Hi all

The flying weight is about 5 to 6 lbs, unfortunately the retract are optional, they cost around $29.00 and I think they are good enough for the job. The airplane comes with fixed gear.
I must say that this airplane flies excellent, I must say that is my best flying airplane in my hangar, it beats my Hangar 9 P-47 60 size.
It is semi-scale so the wings do not look like the scale airplane.
I purchased new hardware, and NO, the airplane was not varnished from factory, I did that to fuel proof it.
I still have to upload a picture od the finished product, will do that soon.....

I am just having lots of fun with this plane. :D

Very Nice ! I have the same one except in Winter Camo. Mine has an Tower .46 and has yet to be flown ; hopefully sometime soon I can get er maidened. I'll post pics as soon as possible.</p>

Looks great. I bought the Winter Camo version off of a guy, it was rigged for a YS 110. I put the TH .75 with stock muffler in it and kept the 20 oz fuel tank installed. It already had the upgraded retracts with working strut attachments. The wings have been clipped to 58", along with a little off of the horizontal stab. Great plane, fast with the TH .75 and will climb from 0 ft. to over 400 in a few seconds! Rolls quick! Lands a little on the fast side though. I love it.

UPDATE ON VQ MIG 3.
I HAD the VQ Mig and only got 7 flights on it before it crashed today (1-29-10). I flew the length of the runway, banked hard left, and the LEFT WING FOLDED!!! ; it wasn't at the center where you glue it together, it was inboard of the retract landing gear well. I chopped the throttle and she went for about 100 feet, then became a DART. Luckily it has been raining here for a week and the field was muddy where it went in. I got everything but the plane and a servo back. When we looked at the wing, there is no plywood joiner inboard of the landing gear, just two pieces of THIN Balsa with FOAM inbetween on a major spar. Unacceptable building practice. I don't overpower planes by much, and this should have up to the stress from my ST .61. What a stinko, cheap plane, and especially at the price they are these days. I had retracts also. NOT WORTH THE $$$. Needless to say, it went into the trash. Guess I won't be buying that .61 Hien I was looking at.
