Kmp Gee Bee Setup Info
Can anybody who has set up a KMP GEE BEE tell me what they did. I've got a OS .91FX a OS 1.20 and a Fuji 32 and I'm trying to decide which one to put in the GEE BEE. I'm looking for info from anybody who has actually set one up and flown it and what did it take to set up. I like to fly fast, aerobatic and flat out. So I'd like to put the Fuji 32 on it to swing a big prop and fly strong and fast if the plane will set up good with it.
I'd like to know what kind of engine, prop and any nose weight added and what was the flying weight? How does the plane perform: will it rip through the sky on an OS 1.20 or mearly fly nice and on the fast/sporty side? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks bob |
Kmp Gee Bee Setup Info
Ive put about 5 flights on my kmp gee bee it flies great with the saito 120 and an 18/4 prop. It likes speed and it is fast with the saito. Takeoffs are just fine with a touch of right rudder needed to compensate for the torque of the saito. In flight the faster it goes the more stable it is it certainly likes speed. Landings are somewhat of a handful just keep them fast on final approach, the airplane slows down nicely. I had to modify the gear as the wheels tend to get into the pants. I used quater inch foam epoxed at the point of the loop in the gear. Pack both sides firmly and it will give the gear some dampning that it truly needs. I also put a copper bushing made from tubing and cut with a dremel tool to tighten up the wheel and used a ring lug as a standoff to keep the wheel off the wire. You will surly enjoy this bird and it will sure turn heads at the field believe me its not that hard to fly youll love it.. Good luck Bill M e-mail me if you have more questions..

Bill,
Did you have to put any lead up front to get it to CG? If so how much? Does the plane really move with the 1.20 or is the performance marginal? I just hate underpowered planes and don't want to get caught with a dog on the first flight. Thnaks bob |
Gee Bee trim

Hi-
We found the KMP Gee Bee balances perfect with a 120FS (ASP/Magnum/OS) with a 1500mah rx pack under the tank and 150grams of additional lead weight as far forward as possible. These engines weigh approx. 850-900 grams, so the perfect engine for the R2 120-size would be just about 1kg - 1000 grams. A big twin or radial would impair the models excellent flying qualities! |

Rich,
Thanks for the info. What size prop are you swinging? Did you have to do any reinforecment to the landing gear? thanks again. bob |

APC 16x8. Gives nice speed and normal aerobatics with ease. See other GB threads about u/c improvement - we are making a scale one with stiff rod rigging all around and sprung oleo legs.

I put the cg about 70 mm from the leading edge at the wing root. The cg envelope is very narrow on this bird. The 120 is the perfect engine for this bird for a scale sound and good torque and power. the control throws are right on as per instructions.

We use CG at 92 mm from leading edge for a livelier performance.

Thanks for the info!
Did you guys beef up the landing gear at all? bob |
RE: Kmp Gee Bee Setup Info
What did you guys set the engine Thrust angle at? Straight or a little right... or down? Thanks

RE: Kmp Gee Bee Setup Info
I used a G-23 with no right or down thrust, standard size receiver, 16 oz. tank, 1800 6volt battery and standard BB servos. I still needed to add about 4 oz of weight to the nose but it had plenty of power.

RE: Kmp Gee Bee Setup Info
hi bat man
i have the kmp 80!QUOT! gee bee. i used a G26 on it. in th manual they implement of the CG is 105mm from leading edge!!! the G26 is 35mm away from the fire wall in order to reach the prop out of the cowl,( i can get back by 20mm than the prop will align on the edge of the cowl exactly!!) i have a problem! a huge nose weight!!! i started to run on the runway and as the rear wheel went up, the nose went down damaging the prop!!! any suggestion? the g23 is the same as the g26 so i believe you have more knowledge on the setup than mine. i have moved all servos: rudd*1 + elev*2 to the back, they aren't installed on the original servo tray in the middle of the body! thx gadi, israel. |

I flew mine a lot and you have to get used to the plane. If the plane is balanced right you have to get used to when the tail comes up using the elevator to hold it level. gain speed riding on the wheels. then lift off. It takes practice. If you have another tail dragger practice with that. If the Gee Bee lifts too soon it will tip stall. |
