Hi David,

I fitted the Robart hinges right into the edge of the aileron, angled downwards, so they are already bent when the aileron is straight. It seems to work well.

Mono/Ultrakote hinges? <gulp> If you mean use covering as a hinge material? I would definitely recommend you don't do it! It would be nowhere near strong enough for a model of this size.

Yes, I have the Edge, and yes there is a plastic belly pan. Not my favourite part of the design, but it seems pretty strong. I will be using brass inserts with 4-40 bolts, not screws.

I haven't flown it yet, but if you do a search for the Vector Edge, you will see Calflyer raves about it!

its ok I grew up on them, they are incredible! Only band that takes history lessons and turns them into epic 8 min metal songs, lol gotta love it!


Anyone notice the VectorFlight webpage now states the backlog of orders has gone from 7 days to almost 2 weeks. Im glad to see a smaller company stay busy with a good product. I just cant wait until they ctach up alower their prices again so I can get one :)

Hover with Edge
 

I got my edge back together and added some tail weight to fix the CG problem. Plane flew great. I could hover the plane at just about 1/2 throttle and pull out with ease. The plane flew awesome until one of the club members took my plane out while hovering the plane. I am getting another one as these planes are awesome. I hope this helps inspire some folks.

Hingeing question again....Vecto tech support says they supply CA hinges with the planes, but don't install them so you have the option of using something else. Do they cut slots for the CA hinges provided?

Also, has anyone flown the 66" Extra? Lots of noise on RCU regarding the Edge, but I like the looks of the Extra better and it seems (from the VF website) that the Extra comes out a bit lighter. My primary interest is IMAC style aerobatic flying, although a bit o' 3D would be fun too!

Hi David,

Vector supply CA hinges, but I didn't notice the slots had been cut. As I say, I used Robart pin hinges which were very easy to install and are extremely strong.

My VF Extra
 

I'm no 3D flyer, but I have the 66" Extra and it's great. Smooth, tracks straight, excellent aerobatic machine. Nice four-point rolls, stall turns, etc. Lots & lots of vertical with an ST G90. Balanced just right with the battery Velcro'd to the back of the firewall. I think you would like it for IMAC style stuff.

That sounds like too much fun! hovering at 1/2 throttle! My Vector 540 is a rocket with a 91FX but havent tried low level hovering yet. I am trying to take it way up and pulling into the hover position and it seems to respond well without any problems. Most times I am just having a ball with flinging this plane around. It responds lightning fast and crisp, sort of like a very precise sports car. Maybe has to do something with the strong airframe and wings.

Actually I rec'd an e-mail from Vector this morning. They said they would pre-cut CA hinge slots for me at no charge if I requested it at the time of order. Although I like the idea of the robart hinges, I've never used them and I doubt my abilty to get them mounted properly on the pre-beveled control surfaces. As VF used to sell the planes with the control surfaces pre-hinged with CA hinges, tehy must have the tooling set up for this already so they should be perfect!

David dont doubt yourself! They are pretty easy to do if you do it slowly and excersize some patieince in the process :)

You might want to ask them what they recommend :)

VF tells me that they like CA hinges, and used to use them in production, but for some reason CA hinges had a bad name early on and people used to cut them out and replace them, so they stopped installing them at the factory.

I went through the same thing and im pretty sure its gonna be the Extra 300. Im sure it rumor but I have heard Extra's are a bit easier to fly. Dont know?!?!

Guys, Ive flown both and they are both very fine flying airplanes, I would actually say easy with reduced rates. Both slow down a lot if you just want to take it easy at first, but turn them loose and they can create a big riot!! Dont think you can go wrong with either one.
