Vector Flight Edge 540?

Just wondering if anyone has flown or had experience with the VF Edge? I saw were they are on sale for 149.00. Also is it a 2 piece wing or one? Thanks for the comments!

Its a very good and strong airplane, great for aerobatics, not for beginers though, and a great value! If you do a search on vectorflight, that will bring up a lot of posts.

Hi Calfyler,

OOooh! Another potential convert!

I still haven't finished building mine. I really must get goin'!!

-David C.

p.s. I accidentally ordered a 58" Extra too. I couldn't risk the price returning to a saner amount. At least I now have a Vector Flight model to put my OS 91 FX in now!

David, youll love the 58 inch Extra by Vectorflight. I got mine two years ago and still have to fly a better handling extra in this size and engine range. Put in hundreds of hours with a .60 till my engine blew! And I bought it 2 years ago for $180 or so!

Youre right, with these prices, I think I need to stock up. hehe. Only I already have all they make except the Sukhoi. hmmmmmm.

Just out of curiosity, where are you seeing them priced at $149.00??

they had a price increase in the last few days. Still a good deal at $189 for a 60-90 sized quality built aerobat

I think they just raised the prices yesterday.... Two of my buddies just ordered them this weekend. They both ordered the 66" Extras.

Their website is

http://www.vectorflight.com/default.asp

. . and they used to be $149 until yesterday.

It's hardly surprising they have put the price up, as they have been snowed under with work, and are finding difficulty filling the orders.

I reckon it's partly because of the amazingly good comments about their products here in the forum.

I managed to beat the price increase on both my Edge, that I received last week and the 58 inch Extra that I believe was shipped today

:D :D :D

Hi T,

You will find lots of comments about them by entering the word 'vector' in the search.

They are really good models, extremely well engineered.

I have the Edge, and my order for the 58 inch Extra is on its way here I believe.

-David C.

p.s. Calflyer, did you order the Sukhoi in the end?

I did a search and that is how I came upon this thread.

The only real questions I had is what kind of servo requirements does it have, (how many and whether they need to be high torque or will standard BB servos do the trick) and if something like the OS .91 FX or 1.08 FSR would be a good choice for power.

I think the 91FX should be enough power but Id personally go for a 90 4 stroker. Servos? id be safe and get something decent for them, middle of the road and maybe something beefy on the rudder

I asked Vector Flight themselves which servos to use, and they suggested standard ball bearing servos where sufficient.

Excellent, thank you for the answers.

Do you have any idea what the set ups are for the elevators and rudder? How many servos are needed? I'm trying to put the budget together and am just curious...

T.

The elevators are connected by two push rods that are joined in the fuselage, so only one servo is needed for them.

The ailerons use two separate servos, mounted in the middle of each wing half. The two wing halves are transports separately and joined together at the field, which is a definite pus point for me, as I have a small car!.

So 5 servos are needed. If you are on a tight budget, I would recommend you use a non-ball bearing servo for the throttle as they are less than $10.

Just to add to Davids comments I would suggest the Futaba 3004 or the 3001. Both are ball bearing servos and are:

3004= $14 roughly
3001= $19.99

I use them on all my planes and have yet to have a problem

I was planning on the 3004's. I have several of them lying around looking for a home...

David, have not ordered the Sukhoi yet, desperately wanted to but the wife pulled the plug finally! Vector told me the prices will be reduced once they have their backlog under control, so I will wait.

Does anyone have any photos of the bottom of the Edge and the Extra? What sort of hinges are used on these planes?

The bottom of the wings is almost all white.

They used to fit hinges at the factory, but decided that people wanted to fit their own choice of types, so they now leave it to us.

I have fitted Robart pin hinges on everything and they went in easily.

The aileron is the type that doesn't have a 'V' cut in its leading edge to allow movement, but an angle going all the way to the top edge, so the wing / aileron joint on the top of the wing looks like a continuous surface, and the underside has the gap to allow movement.

I guess one could apply some film trm to the bottom to jazz things up a little..

When instaling the Robart hinges on a "surface hinged" aileron, how close to the top surface do you need to drill the hole for the hinge? LE bevels are cut that way for film hinges, I wonder if mono/ultrakote hinges would work?

David, you got the Edge right? Does the Edge have a plastic bellypan like the Extra?

Have you flown yours yet?
