Tower Kaos ARF Flying Issue

I took my TH Kaos out for its first flight the other day and I had a problem keeping it under control. It was very twitch and when I applied the power it just keep going up. I had to add a lot of down trim and it still wanted to clime. I had a Bridi Kaos years ago and I did not have this problem with that one.

I have an Evo 46 on it with an APC prop and the trims and cg are set per the instructions. I had to add ¾ oz of lead to the tail to get the cg correct.

Are you guys using the trims and cg per the instructions?

You have to balance the plane upside down because it is a low wing plane

RE: Tower Kaos ARF Flying Issue

I had this problem and the guys here on RCU helped me solve the exact same problem. I had to check 2 things. The first was the incidence on the stabilizer. The second of course is the CG. The first thing I would do is check the incidence on the stab and then reduce the amount of weight in the tail. Double and triple check the CG as previous stated in the inverted position. Also make sure you have down thrust on the engine...this should already be factory set like the stab but make sure they are correct.

Just this week a boy and his father showed up at our field with a v-tail 3 channel park flyer that would not take off. The tail would lift but would not leave the ground. We hand launched it and it flew 30 feet straight to the ground. After close examination I could see that there were two thumbscrews holding the stab. I adjusted them...changing the incidence and the plane flew great the rest of the day. I say all this because I have run into this situation in 2 ARF's. One was similar to your Kaos (Goldberg Skylark) and th eother was an Albatross biplane.

Good luck I hope some of this helps...let us know.

Thanks for the help. I will check the cg and let you know.

So I checked the cg, its ok with the wheels down but upside down its tail heavy. So I removed 1/4oz from the tail and its right on. I will let you know how it flys.

Thanks you guys are great.

Do yourself a favor and remove another 1/4 of weight and fly it a little nose heavy untill you get the bugs worked out.

I agree with 5focus...take another 1/4 oz. out. Much easier to fly if it is a little nose heavy.

I took the plane up tonight and it was a lot better.
Thanks,

[8D]If a plane is nose heavy if will fly poorly, but if it is tail heavy it will fly once. I always try to start a little nose heavy and slowly remove a little nose weight. I have a TH Kaos that was very nose heavy with a Magnum .52FS until I added several ounces to the tail. I think it is designed around a .40 - .47 2-stroke and the conversion to 4-stroke power was a bad idea. I have another that I will build when this one bits the dust, but it will definitely be 2-stroke powered.

I had a Kaos some time ago and it crashed due to a radio problem. I loved it so much that I purchased another one. I'm getting ready to put it together using a Evolution 46. What size prop are you running?
Thanks

I fell in love with the Kaos design/concept via reading the articles about Joe Bridi and the Kaos in RCM, many, many years ago. I've owned, built and flown many versions of the venerable Kaos too. I have yet to meet or own one that I did not love.

At the moment, I have an original Bridi Kaos (60) kit, an original Bridi Super Kaos (60) kit and several variations and sizes of other Kaos iterations, including the latest TH Kaos ARF. Each and every one of them make me smile. No, I'm not trying to sell any of them. But thanks for thinking about it.

Like Ed Cregger, I have loved all the Kaos's I have owned. I set up the Tower Kaos exactly per the plans as to balance. I use all their hardware
including the tank and wheels supplied, and am extremely pleased with the performance. They are really easy to fly, and the only thing that keeps
them from the trainer category is their speed. They are a pretty quick plane with a good 46 (such as TTPro or OSAX). Good luck. As to wing and horizontal anges,
have not experienced any proglems, and my friend and I have assembled and flown several of these planes.

Its fast enough for me I normally fly at 1/2 throttle.

Thanks. I probably go with that combo.

Hey chopper man,I 've got an OS55AX with a APC 10x7 four blade prop on mine and it screams.I also have a Mac's muffler on it.I had the prop laying around, and I needed ground clearance,so I used it.I put mine together as a taildragger, and the gear I had on hand were short hence the ground clearance problem. The only problem I see with this airplane is now I want a bigger one,so I'm going to order a 60 size from Bluejay Airplanes.Have fun and good luck with your's.

I started putting mine together this weekend. I'm looking forward to having another Kaos. Would love to see some pictures of your taildragger setup.
