RE: Larger Revolver

It snowed about 18" here in NY on Sunday, and the gusting wind is finally calming down, so I'll be taking the Rev 70 (with the YS 140) out to the field tomorrow morning on skis. Just put them on the plane and I'm psyched! I'm guessing by tomorrow the snow will have settled down some and should be flyable. Weather projection for 9am is winds at 11mph WNW and 28deg F, so not bad. Will report back with the results.

LOL!!! Down here in Texas, we would freeze to the field in conditions like that. We call 45 degrees, sunshine and 10mph wind "not bad" here. Or in the summer - 95 degrees and no wind - "not bad". But 28 and any wind AT ALL - no thanks! I don't think I have enough clothes to fly in weather like that.

Ah, with my long underwear, a turtle-hood, a turle-neck shirt, gloves (for fueling) and a Raydiowarm, I won't feel the cold at all. LOVE it, in fact. The snow makes for a really nice, smooth runway.

28 degrees and 18" of snow?? Today it was a cold 58 degrees, but tomorrow it is supposed to warm up to 72 with a lite breeze. Thank goodness for sunny South Florida. Now if we could only do something about Hurricanes, Iquanas and Pythons. Not to mention West Nile Monitors.

14 inches of snow here on Sunday. 65 degrees on tap for Sunday. Crazy weather to say the least. Can't wait to get my new servos in and fly the snot out of the Rev 70 this weekend. (well at least make its nose run a little) http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...eeth_smile.gif

Didn't you forget the crocodiles and alligators? That said, I would rather have the 72 deg and calm, but this is NY!

Alligators, Crocks - they usually wont bother you if your carefull, but a 20' long Rock Python, with a body the size of a telephone pole. They are man eaters in their native Africa. I'm sure they make for a nice pet! Fortunately they don't seam to hang out at our flying field yet. I thought this was a Revolver 70 thread?

Excellent flying this morning on the snow with the Rev 70 and the YS 140. The skis worked perfectly. Weather was very mild - 30 F and 3mph WNW. Landings were a bit quick, though, so I swapped out the 15x12 prop for a 16x7, and that made all the difference. Also felt like I had lots more control at low speed - allowed me to do some nice very-low inverted passes and better knife-edges. Going out tomorrow morning with my other Rev 70, with the DLE 20. Hopefully I'll get the carb dialed in this time. Going to move the skis over now.

Took pics in the field this morning with the Blackberry (attached) but they came out dark. Looks like night, but it was actually VERY bright out at 10am. Must have been TOO bright for the camera, with the sun bouncing off the snow. Will have to see if I can change the F-stop on a Blackberry...

Love the skis, Mike
How does the YS start in cold weather; did you have to use lighter fluid to get it running?
How much wt difference is there between your two R70s with the YS and the DLE20?

RE: Larger Revolver

wjc - thanks about the skis. The Rev 70 with the YS 140 is definitely heavier (though I don't have an accurate scale), by the engine alone. And, because the YS lies on it's side, part of that weight is off-center, which means I had to add weight to the opposite wing for balance. All of that adds weight and "moment" (think that's the right term) to the plane - as a result it does rotate slower than the Rev 70 with the DLE. The YS did take some work to get started yesterday - I probably should have primed it more. But once that engine get's going it's a beautiful beast - runs smooth as glass while it gulps my Nitro. The DLE is much easier to start, though doesn't run quite as smooth. Flew the Rev70\DLE on the snow this morning on skis (though the snow was getting sticky at the end there, started to warm up here). From what I've read the DLE will run better as it breaks-in.

Finished my Rev 70 today. Came out to 8.75lbs with a Saito 100 in the nose. I've had this engine in WM P-51 for a year or so and love it. I'll run a 14x8 or a 13x10. Tower TS-160 on the elevator (a rebadged Hitch 5625MG), a Hitec HS-5625MG on the rudder, a pair of Tower TS-140s on the ailerons (MG 82 in/oz) and I've got a HS-225MG on the throttle. Hydrimax 6v 2000 mah battery.

I had the same set up (engine). You will find the motor and plane like the 14 much better. The engine seemed smoother and the speed was the same but the plane was more stable with the 14 as well, defiantly use the 14 on the maiden until you get used to the speed this thing has on landings. Good luck.

Is it fast with the FA-100 ?

How did you determine that the T-160 was a rebadged HS5625?

Happy New Year? Not. This is what happens when your DLE20 stalls and forces a landing far off the end of the runway in the rough. A bad bounce killed the airspeed and she nosed in from about 8ft. Only the 4th flight. Also had a pinion slip on my scale 90sized Agusta. 15 pounds of heli doesn't auto to well with an already low head speed. Pretty crappy newyears day flying for me. Oh well, at least Ihave something to keep me busy.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../sad_smile.gif

RE: Larger Revolver

afjetmech - Sorry to hear about your crashes. For the DLE20 stall, mine (on my Rev 70) has been stalling off and on (fortunately I've had some altitude each time, enabling relatively easy dead-stick landings), and it looks like I was running it too lean. (I have only about one gallon through it so far). But if I close the high-speed needle by only about 1/8th the engine will stall while doing a knife-edge. My impression (and from reading from others) is that you need to run this engine rich until fully broken-in. Thpugh that produces gurgling during mid to full throttle running. Could yours have been running it a bit lean? Anyone else have any info \ experience with this? Thanks.

afjetmech 01-02-2011 08:21 AM

RE: Larger Revolver

Actually Ihad it a little rich, then turned the H needle in about 1/8 turn. Close to "factory" setting. It was stalling on throttle up so Iwas told to richen the low end a little. Seemed to help, but then it stalled the last time when Ithrottled down. Ishould have kept the idle up a little higher. Advise to anyone using this engine. Remove the idle stop screw completely. It punches a nice hole in the cowl if your engine breaks loose. Ihad it backed out, but not removed.

RE: Larger Revolver

I am no expert on the DLE 20 as I do not own one but have the 55 and know a ton of people running the 55. Unless you see whats going on its hard to say why things dead stick. Allot of time it is peoples tuning but I have seen people with issues outside of that such as the carb or ignition. A couple of things:

-GET RID OF THE CHEAP PLUG that comes with this thing. I can't tell you the amount of times I have read and seen people having issues with the crappy stock plug.

-Burble, get used to it. Its gas and not broken in if you lean the engine while its breaking in to get rid of the burble you are going to screw it up and you will risk dead sticking. It gets better as it breaks in.

-Tuning is pretty straight forward. First find the high end, find the max RPM by leaning (with a tach) and then richen it a little, the engine will take time breaking in.

-Once this is done find the low end, lean it until it stalls when throttling up and then richen it a little. You will have to keep leaning the low end as it breaks in.

The carbs are sensitive 1/8th is a ton. At first I wondered why I went gas LOL. One click on the low and it would throw it out of wack. As an FYI this thing will also stall if you are to rich as well on the low end. At the end I love it.

If a lot of people are having problems with this engine on the revolver it could be the cowl as well. You can run a carb equalizer (film canister) that will help it.

Of course it can always be your set up.

Not a problem, Loved the pictures of the revolver on skis I may give it a try.

Everyone needs to just pitch the stock plug its such a cheap fix that has been known to cause a ton of problems.

Below is a pretty good thread on gas set up (Al Lewis on flying giants, gas for newbees) he shows the film canister and some other things. I hated gas at the start I didn't have any dead sticks but saw enough that it made me nervous.

What a joke you cannot put flying g in LOL.
