RE: Larger Revolver

Wildwings, I see you live in Rapid City, and we have been through there enough times to KNOW that if you think the wind isn't going to be howling tomorrow, I have a bridge I wanna sell you... :D Sure love the summers in SD though! And what would a conversation be without mentioning Wall Drug??? :) I haven't used CA hinges in YEARS. I simply like the hinge-points. I take it you have the little Robart "Jig" that aligns the drilling? And yeah! The Rev is like the Harmon Rocket, or even like the Shoestring, though I believe Jet22 or Microdon2 did say that the small Rev is almost exactly like the Shoestring. I had shopped, bought, built and flew a lot of planes over the years HOPING to find that ONE special plane that I could fly into my retirement years, (I'm only 57 Dec 28th), and the large Rev has really put a spring in my RC step! When I lost my first one from a bad antenna install, I was fighting discouragement in a sense until I got the new one back on the bench... [&o] I like my Rev THAT much! [8D]

LOL every 500 ft is a Wall drug sign, yeah if you cant fly in wind here you dont fly much but summers are great been here 12 yrs since i retired from USAF.like everyone is saying would love to se them come out with a 50-100cc Revolver that would be fun.

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice from the experts. I am considering putting S3010 HT servos in the Revolver with a 6volt receiver battery. I know they are not MG, but right now, I cannot put the money into MGs. Do I need to use a voltage regulator with this combo or is that necessary? The servos are rated to take the 6V battery, but I am still learning the do's and don't's of the bigger planes. Always flown mostly 40 size planes. Any advice would be great. Thanks all.

Dave

RE: Larger Revolver

The Futaba S3010's with 6 volt packs work fine without a regulator. I have that set up in three planes, GP SuperSkybolt, a GP RV-4, and the Revolver 70.:D

Bruce,

Thank you for the quick response. I have read good things about the Futaba S3010s, but haven't actually had the chance to use them. I am really looking forward to putting this bird in the air.

Thanks again!

Dave: And just think! When you aren't flying, you can hook these servos up for your Wood Splitter!!! :D Oh... Don't listen to me... I have a bad case of "Servo Envy" with all this talk I read about powerful servos... :)

Steve,

So many choices. Money limits my wants and desires. :D And of course keeping the wife happy does a lot for keeping me happy and allowing me to continue my habit, I mean hobby.

Hey Widget, those S3010s are just wimpy ol' standards that only sell for $25 each. They are only 72oz-in @ .20 sec/60*. Nothing like those bumper winch monsters mentioned earlier. ;)

But you know, I've always wondered what it'd be like to put servos in the plane that would simply crush the wing if the aileron got stuck. ;)

Good thing about those servos, if you were flying gliders and the winch broke.......... you got spare winchs in your backup model. Or think ahead and you could not worry about finding a Ford starter motor for your winch. They use auto batteries and are heavy. Just use one of those Clysdale SERVOs for your winch and you could power it with LiPo flight packs. ;)

RE: Larger Revolver

da Rock,

You are exactly right. I got six for 145 at Tower and they are standard servos with a little higher torque rating. The S3001 are 20 a piece, so I figured with all that I have read about these S3010s I couldn't go wrong for just a few bucks more.

I do agree with Widget though, the S3004s are great little servos and I have them in most of my planes and have never had any issues out of them.

A standard servo with 48 oz of power equals 3 pounds of force. At full throttle or flying into a head wind they may not hold on a plane of this size or they may back off slightly, while under load. They may also burn out at some point from the excess load on the undersized motor. Just thought I'd put it out there.

kewl

These forums can be a source of good info, can't they. :D

You made a great buy there. The S3010s have better than average power for standards and are reasonably priced. Also, they match the airplane. win win win

RE: Larger Revolver

Personally, I'm a JR/Spectrum Guy. I have been using the DS821's 72 oz/in @ 4.8V and 88 oz/in @ 6.0V using a 6V battery with good results. I didn't however use them in a situation where they would be put under a load far greater than what they are designed to do. If I need a little more power plus using 6V system, the ST126MG metal gear servo 126 oz/in @4.8v; 142 oz/in @6v is my choice. I have liked these and they have been very dependable for me so far. They may not have as fast response time as the digital's but, for my style of flying, I'm really enjoying them. For less than $40 each, not too bad!

The ST126's are great for planes up to 30cc size gas and up to a 150 - 180 size plane. I know I'm probably borderline on that but I'm not one who puts their airframes through allot of really high torque maneuvers all the time. I'm more of a sport pilot than a 3D pilot. Please consider that before telling me I'm nuts.....[8D]

Hope this helps,

Gary

RE: Larger Revolver

Well guys, I just finished up my Revolver 70 this afternoon. The specs are:

1. Magnum 91 4 Stroke

2. Futaba 8FG Fasst system with S3010 servos and 6 volt, 1500mah SR Batteries NiCad battery, ElectroDynamics Ultra Switch II

3. Sullivan 3.5 inch SkyLite wheels with aluminum hubs

4. Sullivan tail wheel

5. Robart ball horns with bolt through connectors for the ailerons, z bend at the servo horn

6. Dubro ball linkage on the elevators

7. Dubro black plastic bolt through and lock connector on the rudder

8. All up weight of 9.5 pounds, four ounces more than the specified max weight

9. Balances right at 5.5 inches from the leading edge. This required that the battery be mounted just behind the wing tube

10. Lateral balance required 1 ounce of weight in the left wing tip

Some modifications/comments about the Revolver 70

1. The cowling fits perfectly requiring a small cut out for the rocker arms, needle valve, and a large cut out in the bottom for the exhaust and cooling. The opening in the bottom can only be seen when looking underneath the plane. I did add a fifth cowling mounting block on the top of the firewall.

2. The landing gear plate already had triangle stock added but I still layed up the inside of the landing gear plate and froward and rear bulkheads with two layers of 3 oz fiberglass and 30 minute epoxy. I have done this on other ARF's and have never had the gear ripped out of one of those planes. Of course I have bent the gear pertty good once in a while but have never had it fail:eek:.

3. I added a coating of 30 minute epox to the firewall and fuel tank area.

4. Turning the carb 180 degrees on the engine allowed me to mount the carb servo where shown in the directions. I cut a hole in the tank floor for the servo to drop through with the servo arm sticking through the tank wall. This gave me a direct run to the carbs throttle arm on the outside of the fuel compartment. This also gave me easy access to the servo arm screw and the easy link screw. This idea came from one of the posts on this thread;).

5. I installed a single elevator servo as shown in the directions. I have use this setup in a number of other planes without problems. I do coat the joint of the two control rods with JB Weld.

6. The rear frame of the canopy disintegrated on me so I had to build a new one from light ply. It looks as good as the original:D.

7. I found a good place to mount the VoltWatch I always add to a plane. I installed it on the rear bulkhead of the cockpit. The rear of the cockpit clears it easily when putting it on or taking it off.

8. I did have some problem in two area getting all of the wrinkles out of the monocoat.

Overall I am very pleased with the plane and when the warm weather returns look forward to flying it. I will post some pictures when I learn to use my new camera:D.

One question for you all. When I setup the control throws, they seem to be smaller than what I would have expected. What experience have you all had with the control throws in the directions?

Bruce

Hi Jet,

Is there a forum that deals specifically with the "little revolver" the .46? Im trying to learn as much as possible about this, since I was considering buying it.

AND he finds time to write FULL Build report to boot!!!! :) I was going to make a joke about Bruce Almighty, but I read somewhere that ya don't talk about that kind of stuff at Thanksgiving Time... :) All kidding aside, that is THEE best Build Report I have read in a long time. Just the facts and none of that MADDENING "had to iron out the blah blah blah." Good job Bruce! Not only us, but guys wondering what works and what doesn't will be able to read that years from now and it will really help them make their decisions.
On the control throws, I would set the Minimums to almost the recomended Max, and set the Max Throws WAY more than recomended. I say that WE the flyers know what looks about right (Radical) on the Max throws... The Factory stock-recomended throws will fly it OK, but you will run out of control pretty early with the current Minimums, but a first flight on the current Max throws would be bit hairy, but do-able, because THIS IS a Rev after all! [8D]

Very nice write up taking a break from epoxy and alky fumes. have the rear stab in place. Did some minor sanding on wings now they fit nice and flush, rest of plane is coming along nicely. weatehr is still bad lol so lots of time to work on it.Tomorrow all the control surfaces will be glued on then fun parts starts.

Widget,

Trust me, he will be back!!! Alot of people say the 59" Revolver is a tiger, and they are right!!! I have a OS 55AX on my small Revolver and our club field sit on 68 acres of land and my plane is off site in no time when I do a low high speed fly-by!! Lucky the man who own the land at the west end of our field let us over fly his land. Our runway run east to west. The 70" Revolver is tame, but is a joy to fly!! Now that the rain is back and they are calling for snow this weekend, my winter build is on!!

If it's a Tiger with the 55AX, just WHAT, pray tell, do you predict that a 91FX will do??? I can JUST hear the preacher now at my funeral, "He died doing what he loved most. It seemd one minute he had that small Rev with the 91FX wide open on a low pass, and the next minute the paramedics were calling "Clear!" :D

Hard for me to imagine a 91FX on the small Revolver. I have a GMS 76 on mine and it will really cook. Not sure how fast, but gets the job done very well for me. Much faster and I would think I was flying one of those small jets. The GMS 76 on the small Revo is very nice setup.

Yeah, I think we do overpower, but that is nice when you need it. I have a 55AX on a 40 Twist and 55AX on a 40 size Pulse and I love the extra power. I like having it when you need it. :D
