Kyosho GeeBee Engine/prop?
 

Hi guys

Just bought me 2 2nd hand Kyosho GeeBees (1 for spare parts, hehe).
Just want to know what engine/prop i should use for this giant fuse.
Hints for taming this little beast are always welcome (guess i should keep my fingers on the sticks when i land this one)

For all out speed, stick a YS 110 spinning an APC 15x10 in it. You will be cracking the rear stab within a short amount of time (hehe).

I'm running an O.S. .91 FX two stroke with a 14x6 APC prop at a little over 100 mph.

Too be honest, the.91 is a bit much, but it did balance fine.

I would suggest either an O.S. .61 fx or Super Tiger .75, but I'm a two stroke kinda guy.

According to ThrustHP, there is no way an APC 14x6 spinning at 12,000 rpm can get you over 100 mph. If what you said is true, then a YS 110 spinning an APC 15x10 at 9500 rpm can get you over 120 mph.

I'm use to flying fast planes, and although I haven't thrown a radar on the Gee Bee, I fully believe its doing 100+ mph.

I'll have to check it out, as soon as I get the landing gear blocks fixed, both of mine have come loose. Its a bear because I siliconed the belly pan on, and the gear legs are under that. I think I can operate on the top of the wing, and it should still be covered by the wide fuze.

The engines you guys suggest are bit too much for me... I was more thinkin' about putting a os 50sx or saito 72 in it. Based on your experience the saito should be a better choice because it's heavier (doesn't need nose xtra nose weight), can swing larger props (big fuse) and has a nice sound.
I'm going to my lhs tomorrow, so if u think i'm making a big mistake buying the saito 72 for GeeBee LET ME KNOW ! ;-)

I have a Saito .72 on mine. I moved the engine and cowl forward about 1/4" more than the plans call for. I was worried about adding weight. With the engine out the extra 1/4" and the battery at the back of the servo mount it balanced perfectly. I also used a Kleet tail wheel. I don't recommend this. The wheel pants drag at the rear. The stock tail-wheel would have raised it enough to stop this. Your right about the landing. the wires are the culprit here. They are to flexible. If you try and land real slow it won't tip stall but will turn flat Mine goes right and the rudder won't effect it at low speed. BUT... if you try and come in fast the pants dig in as the gear flexes back. there must be a happy median here. I haven't been able to find it but only have 15 flights on mine. Speed is not a problem with the Saito. Mines not broken in and at a rich setting it's plenty. Once I lean it out it should be a bullet.later daveo

I got the Saito 72 and put it on the nose with a 14x6 prop.
Had to place the cylinderhead on left 'cause the the holes in the firewall were wrong for the engine mount and saito 72.
Guess there used to be 90 on it...

When you go out to fly it take a 13*6 APC with you. Then fly it with both. You will throw the 14*6 MA away when you feel the difference. later daveo

The owner at one of the LHSs put the Satio 90R3 in a Kyosho Z and hung it from the celing. Last time I asked, it's never seen the tarmac. :rolleyes: It did inspire me to finish my R2 (Adrian Page kit). It's framed up needing to be covered, radio gear installed, and a motor. That 90R3 sure looks sweet... but enough dreamin

Gaaaz I'm sure your Z will be a blast with the 72. Check back and tell us how she flies.

I Finaly got the Gee Bee ready for it's maiden flight...
First thing i noticed, on the flying field, when i wanted to start he engine was that i forgot to cut out a hole in de cowl to reach the plug...[sm=tired.gif] I broke in the engine without the cowl installed. Luckily someone had a drill in his car.
I cranked up the engine and send her up. She immediately wanted to climb and bank hard to the right. I had to adjust ALL trims quite a lot. She flies very good at 1/4~2/4 throttle, scale-like and the Saito 72 produces a very nice sound. I noticed that when i opened the throttle the Bee had a tendency to go down. I have to adjust the down angle of the engine.
Now for the landing. On approach the engine quit (throttled back too much) so i had no 2nd change. I flared and after 2 bumps she stood there, on her wheels. I adjusted the trims and got her ready for 2nd flight.
2nd take-off i think opened the throttle too much en due to the wrong engine angle she put her nose in the grass and ended up in the Gee Bees most favorite position: upside down in the grass :)
The elevator horn broke so that was it for the day [:o]
Well this thing looks and reacts like a soupbowl, but is still a blast to fly. You feel the adrenaline pump through your veins. I geuss a bit like the pilots of this WidowMaker back in 1931 must have felt like...

I'll be back with the 2nd flight report. Maybe in 2004 :D

I just flew mine with an old OS 45 MAX with an 11x6 prop. To everyones surprise the plane flew very well. Could use more power but it just looks great and sounds even better screaming at full throttle. It's not so fast that you're constantly turning, making long banked passes, it's very convincing. The landing gear has become a problem too, looks like I'll have to get inside to reinforce the block and get rid of the nasty play.

The landing gear was also the problem when it nose-dived into the grass. The wire of the landing gear bends too much backwards on take-off/landing. Has anyone solved this problem & how? Or is this a challenge you have to live with flying the GeeBee [sm=bananahead.gif]

ps. Looks like you have a very nice Sukhoi (SIG?). I once too had a Sukhoi. Scratchbuild from scaled down real plans. (Did this not myself, bought it 2nd hand). OS 1.40RX with build in reso exhaust on it. On 3rd flight, i was just trimming the plane, i opened up the throttle flying level. The left wing was torn off. This was a 1 piece foam wing (no alu tube). Guess it just wasn't meant to be [:o]

Balance it very carefully ,nose heavy is a good thing with a gee bee z......Looked like a bug hittin the wind shield....The pic's don't look bad but the wing was toast and the fuse was split in several places....JW

Gravity..........LOL. ...Tip stall on landing....It went inverted at about 25' no time to do much about it ...I think it was to close to being balanced on the CG ...I should have went with my gut and made it a little nose heavy......It died on the maiden flight.....[&o]...JW

Major bummer [&o] I feel your pain. I've had a Z in the box just waiting to get done for over 2 1/2 years now. I think I may get mine done this year....LOL Got a OS 71 4 stroker for it. I've known about the Z's balance issue since they first came out. I had a Byron R2 and balanced it nose heavy. She flew perfect. I expect the same from this little ARF.

Once again, sorry about your loss. Hopefully you can build another....
