Converting the Hobbistar to Bolt on Wing
 

Has anyone converted the Hobbico Hobbistar MKIII to a bolt on wing? I have been trying to figure out how to do this and I'm not sure of the best way to do it... I am concerned that my design wouldn't be strong enough....


I would like to see pictures if possible...


If no one has pictures of a hobbistar conversion any similar plane should help me figure this out...

I've converted my Hobbistar 60 MkII to bolt-on wing. I have been flying it for close to a year now with no problem. As a matter of fact, my dumb thumbs steered the plane into a wire fence just a couple of weekends ago, and the wing held on just fine with no damage to the plane at all - other than a slight dent on the wingtip that made contact, and a substantial dent on my ego. ;)

I will take some pictures when I get home tonight.

Any pics yet??

Here it is in the nude. I bought one of the last MkII versions, which came with shelf paper covering. I ripped it all off the plane and recovered with monocote. I added quad flaps, reshaped the tail feathers, and converted it to tail dragger.

I thought about doing the same but ran into a problem and was worried more about strengh during flight I have a .91 four stroker magnum which is quite a lot of power!! one time i was flying a rolling circle manuever and the wing departed on me! it was my fault for using the wrong rubber bands which were office max brands!!! totaled the fuse but saved my electronics and engine thank god.

I meant to say poor quality rubberbands never by rubber bands from any store just by them from your hobby store only!!! it's my warning to ya'll:(

I'm still flying the Hobbistar MkII pictured above. The bolt-on wing conversion held up extremely well, even if the rest of the airplane did not. First, one hard landing broke the fuselage right behinf the wing TE. Fixed that easily with ply braces and fiberglass. Then one freak gust of wing blew the plane off the field bench just as I got momentarily distracted while cleaning the airplane at the end of the day. Cracked one side of the horizontal stab. Also easily fixed. Lastly, another dumbthumb moment saw me slam the Hobbistar into a wire fence one wingtip first while negotiating a crosswing landing. Nose of the aircraft also kiss the fence hard a split second later. No damage whasoever, except one slightly dented and abraised wingtip.

This is one tough bird.
