First a small gripe. The holes for the screws for the flying surfaces could have been pre drilled at the factory. One of my 50cc planes was and it was very easy to assemble the jack screws.
Since on this kit they are not pre drilled I had to drill them. It wasn't hard to do but it would have been easier from the factory.I tok a measurement with a ruler divided it in half and shimmed the thin edge of the rudder and elevators to that height. Then drilled a hole on the drill press.
To get their location. Rudder I slid it on the hinges in place and used the cable outlet for a guide and drew a mark with a sharpie.
Elevator. I hooked up the servo with the servo arm and linkage connected and used it for lining up the first hole. Once I drilled it,I used the first one and laid it over the the other one and used the jack crew to put a mark in the covering. I used that spot to drill the second one.

I then used vaseline to coat the hinge joints and glued the hinges in with gorilla glue. I have used Gorilla glue on my last 4 planes and found it to work great. Much easier then epoxy.

I agree completely Tom!  On the next batch we are having them predrilled.  In fact, it is likely going to be glue in fiberglass horns like on the MX2.

I didn't realize till I posted the previous pictures that I didn't have a picture of the cross section that I measured to get the shim height for drilling the hole.
Here it is.

The fiberglas horns are OK but I prefer the screws. More adjustability.

PS: I would still buy the kit if it had F/G Horns.

Gorilla glue is the only way to go IMHO. I love the stuff. I have found a store that sells it in a tiny squeeze bottle the same size as a bottle of nasal spray. It works great for shooting the glue into the holes for the hinges.

Tom, looks as though we've about the same amount done.

Got the ign., tank along with fuel dot and all plumbing done, rudder and rudder servo done. Gear and tailwheel on of my own. I can't figure out how the tailwheel ass. with the kit works.

My first go at hinges with gorilla glue, I will do the rest of the hinges with it.

Everything looks good guys, having the surfaces pre-drilled for the horns make things a lot easier... Bolts or fiberglass doesn't matter to me as long as its easy!:D

No Jack. You are further along then I am. That is great. Now I can see how you do it first.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

Got a Question.

I have never used C/F servo arms. Are two 2-56 screws strong enough. The bolt pattern on the supplied arms don't fit anything I have in the way of servo adapters.

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build

It is likely enough, but I would go ahead and drill the others and add them with nuts /washer big enough to cover the hole (if you are drilling next to an existing hole for example).

That's what I've done in the past and it always has worked out well.

Hi Tom,

I love following your build thread. A1 workmanship as always!

Well the fuse is completely done. Made a tiller bar to bolt to the rudder for steering. Installed the RX, elevator sevos, ign. and RX switches. Put on the wheel pants and wheels. Just some loose wires to tidy up but I'll do that after everything is programmed.

Still have the control horns to do on the elevators and ailerons. Need to install the aileron servos and glue all the hinges in all the surfaces. With a little luck it'll be complete tonight.

Anyone know where the CG should be for this plane. I can find absolutley nothing in the manual.

Hey Guys... if you're comfortable with a 3d plane, then start about 12-13cm from the leading edge ATthe root.

Ithink I started at about 16cm.. it was handfull, but it stood on the tail well , ha!

I messed up the tail wheel assembly by putting the flat for the screw in the wrong spot so I went to the LHS and bought a new assembly. (Pictures tomorrow)All I really got done today was the pul pul cables got installed.
My next door neighbor got a new motorcycle and we ended up riding the day away. Little here and a little there and it'll be done sooner or later.;)

Hey Jack. It looks like you will be the first one to fly. Let us know how you like the CG at 12 to 13 cm.

I don't know how that compares to the center of the Spar Tube. That is where I like to start from.

Hey guys all finished. radio all set up and balance figured out. Just need to install the batts in proper place.

FYI on CG:

10cm front of wing tube.
11cm middle of wing tube
12cm rear of wing tube and so on.

Mine balances at 12 cm. I am going to add a larger battery to try and get a bit closer to the middle of the wing tube for the maiden.

It's supposed to rain for 3 days so not certain when the maiden will take place but will reply once it's done.

Will order some graphics for it soon.

Very nice plane Tim.

Nicely done Jack. Have you got a way to take a video?

I went flying most of this afternoon but did a little on the plane while I was charging the batteries.

Got the stabs mounted and the servos and linkages in. Also finished mounting the wheels and pants.

The wheel pants I lined up by blocking the tail up with a box. Just so happened to get the plane level. Then I transferred the the holes in the L/G with a drill. Don't be tempted to rill through at this time cause you may drill the hole crocked like I did the first time I tried it.

Got the new C/F Spinner from Tim at Redwing RC yesterday. I had to make up a 10-32 screw long enough from a 5mm metric screw by running a threading die over the metric thread. Since 5mm is slightly larger diameter then a #10 it works. I couldn't find a 10-32 long enough locally to work on my setup.

Looking good Tom.

I thought only my work bench looked like that. :D Glad to see I'm not alone.;)

I have a vid cam, so hopefully someone is around when I maiden.

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build

I have one of those on the way but mine is in the conventional black/red/white colours.
Because of complexities on freighting a plane of this size from the States to Australia, I am getting mine direct from the factory

This thread is of a great interest to me because mine is a sample that I bought to make a final decision on if I put them up for sale here in Australia or not.

I had some subtle changes made to the kit you get in the US and others less subtle. The most visible change is that what I get will have a cockpit floor and an instrument panel pod rather than the open structure in the standard kit.
According to the freight tracking web page, the box has arrived at my local depot and will be delivered tomorrow.

I'm going to publish a build thread when I get around to do the assembly. I will be using an MVVS26cc for my demo plane!

He He!!!!! You aught to see the other benches. That is the clean one.
I haven't got fed up enough with not finding things I just put down yet. When that happens there will be a major cleaning. Usually once a year.

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build

Using everything that come with the Sbach with the exception of the tail gear my final weight without fuel:

""11lbs. 13oz.""

Syssa 30 weighs 40 oz. RTF without battery.
Both batts weigh 10 oz.

I was really hoping for 11 lbs. I'll see how the flight performance is.

Can't fly today so I'm going out shortly to run the Syssa for the first time. Will report back a bit later.

wingburner 08-29-2010 01:18 PM

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build

Well I fired up the Syssa 30. WOW WOW. It fired the first flip after choking, then it started the third flip. It started the first flip everytime after that.

Intial setting with the engine were Lo 1/4 turn to rich..Hi 3/8 turn to lean. Once that was sorted out:

Vess 18/6s 8250
Mejzlik 18/6 9200

The exhaust stacks also have engine tone inserts in them. Would likely gain a bit more rpm with them out but it sounds great for now.

I have never run a Vess before but it obviously loads the engine more. I run alot of mejzlik props and they are extremely hard to beat.

I will test fly using both to see what the difference are.

What a sweet sweet engine. Very smooth. Should handle the Sbach no problem with those numbers.
