I'm pretty much old school. I'm using 2 1400 mAh NiMH 6.0 volt batteries- one for ignition and one for receiver. I use simple switches and use the servo operated choke to stop the engine- it takes a bit to get it restarts right after killing it, but it works.

RE: RedWing MX2 Build

Just checked the 2 stroke oil bottle.

It is "API TC" and "JASO FC" marked.. wikipedia says they are standards ratings.. so cant be "too bad".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JASO_FC

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/API-TC

So should I rush the remaining 2.5 ltrs through the engine on the ground and get to 1:40 for the next flying day?

EDIT:

Sorry being an idiot: my break in mix is 32:1

I'm on the manuals recomended 40:1 for breakin.. Not sure of the oil brand, its labled as two stroke bike oil...
As I mentioned earlier, oil brand and type makes a big difference. My experience is that every time I switch oils I need to make a carb mixture adjustment. I have being using Amsoil Saber at 100:1 on my MVVS-26, and with that oil and mix I needed to open both the low and high speeds needles from 1/8 to 1/4 turns for proper idle and high speed operation. Before during the break-in period I was using Pennzoil 2 stroke air cooled at 32:1 and besides more oil residue on the plane and less fuel consumption operating temperatures were 20% higher.

I believe Old Tom is running Sthils HP-Ultra semi-synthetic on his JC-28 and he is having very good results. I don't know what ratio he is using but I suggest you try it to see if it helps with your problem. I am sure the Evo should run at 2000 RPMs when properly adjusted when running a good quality semi-synthetic. I don't know if you can obtain Sthils in your area but if you can obtain Castrol RSscooter semi-synth or Putoline RS959 ester over in Europe they are a good choice.

RE: RedWing MX2 Build

I Have one of the discontinued 26cc Su26m's, I originally had a Turnigy 30cc gas engine in it & performance was ok on an 18x6.
However after some advice from the 3D boys I purchased one of the new DLE 30cc engines with the rear carb & all I can say about this engine is WOW!! it has some grunt, I have an Xoar 19A 3D prop on it & at present am still flying it on the break in mix (a litre to go ) perfect idle & heaps of pull in the verticle.
MY freind has just brought one of these MX2's he has a DLE30 as well that he has just converted to a rear carb as well so we'll see how that one goes in this plane.
As for hobbyking I brought the Turnigy off them it ran really well but it certainly didn't look new when it arrived and after some crash damage I couldn't source any spare parts so had to bodge some up myself.

Cheers Steff.

After a few flights on mine, I have noticed that my tail wheel steering wire has broken loose as well. I'm trying to figure out a good way to repair it yet...

Other than that, I love my MX2, and it will be in my hangar for a long time. Unfortunately, it is getting too cold for much outdoor flying, so I'm going to put the MX2 to bed for the winter...

There is no way to fix the tail wheel.. I used a dubro sprung tailwheel and its perfect. You can get them at hobby city.

A couple suggestions on the cowl attachment: I have been using small very small plumbing "O" rings from the local hardware store and nylon washers on my cowl bolts with good success. Usually I also use nylon bolts, however on the MX because the hardware is metric I use the provided metal bolts although I add a drop of blue (removable) LockTite. Once you use the LockTite once it leaves a sticky residue that aids in keeping the bolts tight thereafter.

I have repaired several FG cowls and wheel pants by patching the inside of any cracked areas with .5 ounce FG cloth and finishing resin. Then you can fill the outside areas with automotive Glazing Compound, fine sand smooth and cover with automotive primer. The only hard part is finding the best color match for the finish coat. If you follow good automotive refinishing practices no one will notice the part was repaired. As an added insurance I place several layers of 1" square patches of .25 ounce/sq. yd. Kevlar tissue from [link=http://www.acp-composites.com/home.php?cat=252]Aerospace Composites[/link] over the inside of cowl mounting holes with finishing resin. After the resin cures I drill new bolt holes. That way the hole area is though enough to withstand a loose bolt without tearing the FG.

I drilled and tapped the hole on the rudder were the ball link is to be attached, then threaded a 3/4" piece of 4-40 alltreadth to the ball link and epoxied it in place. So far I have had no problems with the factory provided tail wheel assembly.

Hey guys

1)  Yes, I do have cowls Dale, just let me know if you decide to go that route.  Glad you are enjoying the performance envelope of the plane!

2)  on the wire.  Is it possible to use a softer wire?  Maybe even put some silcone on it for the grub screw to bite down.  I did something like this and didn't have any other problems.
TJ?  Did yours slip out?  What did you do if not?

Glad you are enjoying them guys!
Tim

The wire fell out of my tailwheel assembly before I got it mounted. The wire was stuck in a hole and peened around it to hold it in. Total junk. I went with a Sullivan tailwheel assembly. They cost a bit but work very well.

I use rubber bonded washers to hold my cowls on. The rubber is tight around the bolt and tight to the cowl so the bolt won't turn out.

RE: RedWing MX2 Build

well i´ve just spent an hour after work running the engine..
its ended up far leaner on the low and high needles...

I tried using the RC Aero guide posted last night.. definately helped!!!!
I was fiddeling around non stop with the low needle.. like on a glow engine and no matter what was having the engine stop on me when it had been running fine..
THEN I noticed, after running at full throttle, when I dropped it back to idle, it would bog down and then recover.. IE high needle too rich.. leaned it out.. and suddenly everything was much better.
The thing that confirmed it also was that it was missfiring and "poping" flames out of the exhaust.... only visible when you do these things at night.. so it was clear that it was burning off excess fuel.

this is the end result... comments???
note there is use of the throttle kill fuction so 2 idle speeds, around 3000 for normal and 1500 with kut enabled, you can see both in the video.

will do the same tomorrow or thursday. to check what I have ended up with is fine.

Not questioning your knowledge, my question/statement may actually be the result of inexperience, but are the cowl and canopy screws metric? They seem to fit perfectly in my 4-40, which I thought was an imperial unit, metal clevis. I have found socket head nylon 4-40 screws on http://www.microfasteners.com/catalo...cts/NYLNSC.cfm and was about to place an order till I read your post.

Can anyone confirm if these screws will work on the canopy and cowl?

Looks like you are making progress.
Have you been flying? To much ground running is not good. Not enough cooling. You will be better off in the air. Make only small adjustments from here on out and do it with the cowl on.
Good Job.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

The cowl screws in my Sboch are 3mm. Yours should be the same.
If I were you I would put a lock washer and a flat washer and also use some purple locktite on the cowl screws. This combination has been working great for me with no loose screws. Ever.
The purple locktite (light strength) will not give you any problems taking the screws back out. They just keep them from vibrating loose.

My tail wheel assembly is holding up just fine, I just used a dremel for the flat spot in the top of the assembly for the grub screw to hold on to and thats it. No problems other than that. I use blue threadlocker on my cowling and I've not had one come loose yet...Harborfreightbaby!

Sorry I don't have a photo. I just realized there are a couple of tailwheels available. Old Tom Sbach came with an aluminum tailwheel assembly, my MX2 have the composite FG type. A I understand from other posts if you have the composite one the problem seems to be that the wire attached to the collar breaks off and sometimes the ball link attached to the rudder comes off. My wire is very secure to the collar and I filed a flat on the shaft and secured the set screw with LockTite so it doesn't slips on the shaft. If the guide wire comes off the collar try securing it with a good amount of JB Weld.

My modification was intended to make sure the ball link doesn't detach from the rudder. There is no specific direction on the instruction manual to install the ball link. All I did was to tread a piece of 4-40 rod into the ball link. Then I drill and tapped a 4-40 tread into the rudder bottom, hardened the threads with thin CA and then epoxied the ball link threaded portion to the rudder. That way the ball link will not rip of from its mounting.

The same on the MX2 the cowl bolts are metric (3mm). If I am not mistaken you may be able to tread a 4-40 bolt into a 3mm tread but it will be very loose or most problably will crosstread. I think Microfastener.com carries metric nylon bolts too. Old Tom is correct the light strength LockTite will work wonders in keeping them bolts secure.
