RE: RedWing MX2 Build
excelent.. will go on the hunt in my lunch break on monday.

RE: RedWing MX2 Build
The firs thing I was told by the establishment when I got into gassers is to throw the muffler gasket away and use a high temp silicone gasket material. That is the way I mount all my mufflers. This is the stuff I use. I would think they have the same thing in Europe or at least something similar.
Put on an even coat and squeeze it tight. Mine take overnight to set up but have used it 2 hrs. later with no problems. |

RE: RedWing MX2 Build
In the end. today I went to maiden and yet again didnt get it in the air
Just not happy enough with the motor yet. I´m just not getting the low needle set well enough yet.. I just dont seem to have the trick! I cant get it stable, or if its stable I Cant get it slow enough that it will not accelerate with the throttle stick at "zero" Next week I´ll take it to our neighbouring club which is extremely gasser based to get a hand. |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
JUST found this, after getting home! bit annoying, especially as I have unlimmited internet in my iphone, could´ve found this at the club!
http://www.rcaer.com/userfiles/file/...ight%20Way.pdf will give it a try one lunch time this week at work. (on the ground). Have also added some sulivan pushrod outer casing to the mix screws as it hugs them PERFECTLY.. so LONG screwdriver I have can go straight in and find the screw while the engine is running.. and the handle of the screw is further out than the reach of the prop. Have spent the last 2 days having to stop, screw, start and repeat.. takes ages and its more "guesswork" What can people tell me about the plane running away on the ground? i´m using an 18x6 prop (recomended).. our runway is concrete, rather than grass so it will roll off very easily without much resistance. but this was accelerating past a running speed when I tried a taxi test today... not much chance of a slow smooth landing like that! |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Adjust your carb with the cowl off first. Then fine tune it with the cowl on. I usually let a couple of tank full of gas run through the engine on the ground with the cowl off. Have your wings on to dampen the vibration from the engine. Then give it a final tune before you put the cowl back on. Remember to shut the engine off and let it cool about 4 times per tank full. The heating and cooling helps break in the engine. Your idle will get steady with time. Your engine should idle around 2000 on the first tank without dyeing. But you should be able to reduce that slowly as the engine breaks in. The way that you can tell that your engine is broke in. The idle will shoot up one day when you are at the field. Then you can reduce your throttle trim and it will run real good from that point on.
Maybe you can tighten the wheel collars around the wheels to keep them from rolling so easy. That is just an idea. I fly off of grass so I don't really know if that will work. |

I have experienced a similar problem flying gassers of hard runways. They just pull enough air at idle and it's hard to keep from taxing. With my JR 9303 I am able to program two throttle curves; one for taxiing and landing and another one for normal flight. You will not experience that problem when flying of turf. Try Old Tom suggestion and tighten your wheel collars, that may help a little. Make sure your engine idles at least a minimum of 2000RPMs and that it doesn't hesitates when transitioning to full power or dying when coming back to idle. If it still wants to taxi try anything else but leave the mixture alone. |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Ok, will go with the old "silicon tubing between tyre and collar" braking trick. Just good to know its not that the engine is over reved at idle or something.
|
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
yeah, I always remove the Idle screw it gets in the way on these gassers...
|
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Next question.
Is it worth taping the wing/aileron gaps? has anyone experienced flutter yet? or am I fine without? |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
I don't have mine taped... no flutter yet. [8D]
|
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
"yet" [8D]:D
HOPEFULLY maiden this weekend.. just waiting on the new tail wheel its touch and go.. might get to the post office on saturday morning for me to install it at the club... if not will just have to take the GP extra 300sp out for a spin and wait till next week. |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
I've only sealed one of my 50cc planes before and it didn't have any flutter in the first place, I just did it cause I had some extra time to do it. I have neverexperiencedflutter do to a unsealed henge... I have neverexperiencedflutter to this day period. Knock on wood!:D
|
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
I do have my extra taped... again not because I needed to, but because I had a roll of tape..
Now I dont... so will only go buy some if I see some flutter hahaha Here are some photos of my install as it ended up.. CG set to 130mm... halfway between the redwing reccomendation and the manual´s reccomendation.. will fine tune it later. http://picasaweb.google.com/ceecrb1/...eat=directlink |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Hey Guys Flutter, when caused by hinge spacing, is a combination of the spacing and servos. If your servos are plenty strong, then you are unlikely to have flutter even if you had a substantial spacing. However, if you tape your hinges, and have way underated servos, then you will likely have flutter It's a combination of the factors, with hinge spacing, in my opinion, being the lesser of the 2 variables. PS, I did a video test of the DS090M (rated about 130oz at 6v) last night VS the Hitec 7985mg (rated 172oz at 6v). The power had was NEARLY as strong. I mean VERY VERY close. You get your money's worth with these servos and I wouldn't worry about flutter with them in a 30cc. PS, mine are factory direct and made for USA sale. I know the DS120s got a bad rap, at least partially to do with where people were buying them. I got a batch of ds090ms from a china trade company once, and ended up throwing them out, becuase I could tell (though subtle) that they were refurbed, and had questionable qualities out of the box. </p> |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
I have to admit, the DS120 I have for rudder, I have ordered 2 replacement servos.
the one I have, had a bent output arm so was very stiff.. I used the gearing from a spare ds090 but it has massive slop. The thing that made be very dubious was that the insides of both were IDENTIAL. same motor, same driver board, same gearing etc. I´m not sure if there is actually any difference. Is the 090 fine for rudder or does it need the stronger 120? |

RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Hi Raph,
I do have the ds090s in stock. On the gear I haven't had time to check it, but may be able to today. sorry I couldn't reply on that sooner. |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Is Goldwing and RedwingRC the same company? There is a MX2 at my LHS that has exactly the same specifications and looks the same except it says Goldwing

RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Maidened today!
20 mins of playing with the motor, final adjusting done by a mechanic who has better "engine ears" than me. 2nd flight did far more acrobatics, first was really just some circuits and a test of throws, stall speeds etc.. In the first flight the motor was still tending to cut out at low RPM´s so kept the idle quite high, hence the motor cut on touchdown.. by the end of the 2nd flight it is starting to idle at FAR lower speeds... still only had 1ltr of fuel through it though.. but there is a massive difference in just that litre!! Very nice.[sm=thumbs_up.gif] Congratulations on the maiden.[sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif]

RE: RedWing MX2 Build
good job on the maiden! You'll love that motor, plenty power for this plane.
|
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
Ok the motor is driving me crazy.
I just cant get anything like an "idle" Sat with another club member who is a mechanic and races karts so knows 2 stroke engines... we just cant get it reliable at all. In the end we secured the plane and let it burn through 2 tanks of fuel to see if it needed freeing up a little.. no change. Once its at say 2500 or 3000 revs its fine.. good as gold.. anything below that and it just wants to cut out.. no matter what the needles are set to. so after an entire morning at the club´i´ve not flown at all... next week i´m going to visit another club thats far away where I know they have gasers so there will be more experienced & knowledgable people to help. |
RE: RedWing MX2 Build
In case it helps, i´ve got the cowel off to have a look and found something to ask about..
first is the tube from the engine to carb.. preasure for the pump I think (???) small hint of a leak... given it a new tube which was a better fit.. the original came off far too easily. I tried tightening the nipple a little.. it did turn and 8th of a turn before being "tight" but it wasnt exactly loose. 2nd is the spark plug.. does it give more educated people any hints as to if my carb settings are bad. |
