Default New Rotor Blades

I have been flying with rotor blades that turn CCW as viewed from the top. These have all been molded fiberglass or carbon fiber blades and I have been very happy with the performance. However, I have just completed a 2nd mold to make the blades that turn CW. I have made three blades and made a few test flights. Previously, with the blades turning CCW, the gyro fuselage always had a slight tilt to the right even if I would try to compensate with lateral tilt in the rotor head or the rudder. With the blades turning CW the gyro has no tilt. The performance seems about the same and I have tested them on two gyros with the same results. Another club member has an electric and a glow engine Kellett. Using my blades that turn CCW, the glow engine Kellett tilts to the right but the electric does not using the same blades.

What direction are the rotors turning for most of the gyro pilots?

Default New Rotor Blades

Hello Phil

Every single one of my gyros has clockwise rotation, my own designs as well as my Simple G and Huff & Puff pusher.

I don't have the honour of owning one of those lovely Kellets so I can only comment from my own experiences with my gyros.
I have noticed that on some of my models a slight trim is required to the advancing side due to the flapped up front portion of the disc imparting a reaction 90 offset, rolling the model to the advancing side ( this was kindly explained to me by a knowledgeable gyronut ). The thing is, by trimming this out to fly straight the rotor shaft is slightly inclined to one side effectively putting the mass of the model to one side of the rotor it is hanging off. Wouldnt this perhaps give you this slight tilt ??

Thats the best explanation I can come up with, I will leave it to the experts now :spinnyeye

I will watch this post with interest

Hi Phil...

I don't understand why a different mold is needed for ccw and cw turning blades?? It seems to me that all that would be needed is to mount the blade at whatever end is needed to give either ccw or cw rotation....that is assuming the blade is not tapered.

Really lousy weather up here past several days

OK, I'm waiting for the experts to explain the affect of CW vs. CCW rotation and I think one of the real experts just spoke.

But I think all he said was he was having lousy weather. Bill, I think you can do better than that.

Sean, I think your answer sounds plausible to me.

The reason for another mold.

My molded blades have a rounded and tapered tip and the first few inches of the root end have no airfoil shape. Mostly for aesthetic looks and easy of mounting. Also, I'm beginning to like the smell of that polyester resin. Maybe that's a bad sign?

Bill, how are your blades coming?

Phil
