spad for first gyro

Has anyone tried the Kombat Kopter from combat40.com?
how well do they fly? is the PA2 autopilot nessecery or just helpful? would this make a decent autogyro trainer?
I am an experianced 3D'er, and i understand that bumps and bangs are to be expected. This is why a "gyro-spad" appeals to me.

Any advice will be helpful until proven otherwise!

RE: spad for first gyro

I had a Kombat Kopter, now I have Kombat Kopter pieces. I only flew it once before lawn darting it. It was purely pilot error, not the gyro's fault. The flight was only about two minutes, but I'll do what I can to help. As far as the flight characteristics, it flew pretty good. There was some instability on the roll axis. The PA2 would definitely help with this. It is flyable without the autopilot, but I think it'd be easier to fly with it. Despite several attempts in good conditions, I never could get it to ROG. When I did get it in the air, I had to hand launch it. The good news is, it was pretty easy. I can't tell you how it's flight characteristics compare to other gyros, since this is the only one I've flown. What I can tell you is that it is a very tough craft. I had a few cartwheels and rotor strikes while I was trying to take-off, the worst I had was a broken servo control arm. If you have any more specific question, feel free to ask.

Here's a couple of threads that I had posted about it. Maybe there's info in those that will help.

The Kombat Kopter is OK but the PT Gyro is a better trainer. I've only flown the Kombat Kopter one time a couple years ago for someone at Spring Hill and I remember it was heavy and slow response to the controls. I don't know much about the PA2 but if you put the FMA Co-Pilot on the PT Gyro and do a hand launch for you first flight you are almost guaranteed success.

I think this is the correct link for the PT Gyro.

I have a Gyrobee and would not recommend it for your first gyro.
