Default Triton input error message

Indoors I power my triton with a 9.5 amp AT type power supply which works fine for my tx/rx and other batteries. However, when I am trying to fast charge a six cell 7.2 v type pack (for a rc car) I keep getting a "error - input voltage" message for anything over 2.3 amps.

With my car battery, I can charge the same packs up to the max 5 amps with no problem. The AT power supply delivers around 11.5 volts - well with the recommended range of between 10.5 and 15.0 v.

Anyone have any ideas why this happens?

It looks like your power supply is running out of amps. Great Planes recommends a 13 amp supply for this charger. I'm sure Red can give you the technical answer, but everyone I know who has had that same error message had to use a larger amp power supply.

I have converted seveal PC power supplies that are rated 7-9 amps and have had no problem. What are you using to load the 5 volt side of the power supply. You may not have enough load on it to hold the voltage above 12 volts. I am using a #1157 automotive bulb with both elements connected.

not all pc power supplies put out what they are rated at also... if you do look for a replacement, check this guy out on ebay. Got one of the 13 amp supplies for less than $20, works perfectly and no fan either. (also that is 13 amps at 14 volts, although adjustable...)

**Helps to post the link, dooohh!**
and it appears you can't post links to ebay, so go over there and search for the guy with the username of reklaim (and no, this isn't me, he just has some 13 amp power supplies for sale that are perfect for a triton or any other dc charger)

The power supply I'm using is an older one with a paddle type switch. I haven't been using a load on the 5v side. I'll check to see what the voltage is putting out when it's under load. Thanks

In checking the voltage, I found that it does indeed drop as there is more draw. I'll try loading up the 5v to see if that works. Thanks

I added load to the 5v circuit and, viola! - the Triton works fine even pushing a 5 amp load. No more "Error input voltage" messages. The pc power supply I use is an older unit that you supposedly don't have to add load to the 5v side. Thanks Red for the suggestion!
