Default Lipo questions

I bought four lipo batteries in November 2010. I've probably only used them no more then 10 times as a pair each. I stored them the right way but its probably been two years since I last touched them. They been in the lipo bag ever since.

Question is.... is it safe to charge these? Besides ya know turning into a fire bomb, whats the sign that a lipo is at the end of it's life?

I would go ahead and try to charge them (balance them). Just look at the starting voltage when charge begins...if it begins. If the cells are above 3 volts I think you are good to go. My LiPo charger won't even begin to balance a pack that has a cell under a certain voltage.

There are lots of different views on when a LiPo pack is bad. Just do a search and read/watch as many articles as you can. I don't want to give any bad info. I only know what I do with my packs. Excessive "puffing" that stays puffed and excessive heat are two indications of a pack that is over worked and on the way out. A pack that won't keep a balanced charge in different stages is another thing to watch out for..

The couple of packs that I got rid of were on the edge of something bad...puffing enough to split open a hard case and that sweet smell on the chemicals used to make up a LiPo battery; along with being too hot to handle for more than a second. The one other pack I had was real finicky. It always showed voltage differences greater than I would like to see when starting a charge.
