Default mAh rating for standard alkaline cell ?

Does anyone have any data on the mAh capacity for a standard 1.5V alkaline cell ? I'll be discharging a cell on my accucyle to get an estimate. Has anyone done this measurement ? Please share your data. Thx !

The primary cell makers do not follow the same parameters as is used to test NiCD's. They often use VERY low discharge currents (25mA) and a 0.8V cutoff.

Here is a typical AA cell. Rated at 2700mAH using 25mA discharge: http://data.energizer.com/datasheets...ready/a91b.PDF

Here's some results obtained from my Accucyle at 250ma discharge current:

Energiser (alkaline)...........1400mah
Eveready "heavy duty"..........330mah

What cut off voltage did you use and is it right for that chemistry?

Miles, it is a comparitive study, so I just left the accucyle to do its standard job. I can't change the cutoff of 1.05V

Your test shows a couple of the problems of using alkalines.
1) The effective capacity drops a lot if you discharge at a high rate.
2) The voltage drop as a function of remaining capacity and/or draw rate is much higher than NiMH or NiCd.

The discharge curve places a significant proportion of the cell rating below one volt where the effective power may be too low to run some equipment properly.

Good points Ross. It will be great if the discharge curve is available

No discharge curves, but some interesting info here (tested capacity of AA NiMh and Alkaline cells in DIgital Camera apps):

Thanks Pete. Great article comparing Nimh and alkalines !

The battery makers often have discharge curves available. The link I gave above shows the curve for the proposed example cell.

I use rayovac rechargeable alks and I remember correctly they ran about 360 mah for the AA
Can't quite remember the specs and cutt-off though.
