Default How do you charge you big lipo packs?

Yeah, I know "carefully".

I'm interested in finding out what the guys with big LiPo setups (6s to 10s) use when charging at the field?

I've been flying electric for sometime and whilst my models have been getting bigger so the voltages have gone up. I've got a couple of models which I'm flying a lot at the moment and these days the only stuff I'm flying which aren't electric powered are either helis or gas turbines.

I've a Graupner Mini Show Flyer which is a .40-.60 size fun fly which I've converted to electric which I can grab and go fly at a moments notice, using a Model Motors AXI 4120/18 turning a 14x7 prop powered by a 6S2P 5000mAh Flight Power Pro lithium pack. I been taking a leisure battery with me to field and charging from that and so far it works OK and I can recharge the model 4 or 5 times at 1C before the leisure battery is flat.

Lately I've also finished a Composite-ARF Extra 2x2 which is powered by AXI 5330/18 turning a 20x11 prop powered by a 10S3P 6000mAh Thunder Power pack. I can't use the leisure battery as it just can't deliver the amps continuously and so I've got a couple of heavy duty car batteries and connected them in parrellel. I can only charge at 0.5C a couple of times before they give up delivering useful current. Each battery is rated at 60amps capacity and is supposed to be capable of 540 cranking amps and I figured that if I connected them in parrellel they should be able to sustain at least 4 cycles at 1C, but it doesn't look like they're upto the job.

I'm considering getting an Ion-X and I'd like to crack the whole "charging 10S at the field" thing before embarking on another 10S setup.

I've also thought about getting a small 800w 240v AC petrol generator and running a transformer capable of something like 12v DC at something like 20 amps. I figured 800w should be enough.

What's everyone else doing?

Phil

I am not doing li-pos yet, but when I do it will be higher voltage and pretty large packs. I plan to buy a digital adjustable power supply to charge them. Some guys are using them to charge li-po's.

There are charger now that can handle 10S packs with no problem.

I'm wondering about cell balance though with series cells.
