RE: platinum ex charger
Aussie,
Im having fun and games with this charger.
Trickle charge-Read top of page 7 of your manual. 5 times it wont trickle charge. I had the temp sensor in, so it wouldnt trckle charge (Not meant to with Nimh Ive read)
Do you know how to set the peak voltage for Nimh batteries.
In the normal 1-9 presets I cannot see how to adjust it.
In the user I can adjust it but it appears I can only set Lipo batteries.
See top of page 7 delta peak for nicad / nimh is adjustable. How?
The manual is useless.
Nothing online I can find either.
It appears theres alot of these chargers in AUS. Selling cheap because of a serious fault. Read this. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=518233
here it is
Hyperion's EOS 5i has certainly got a better written manual, and firmware - revision dependent. Pricewise though, IMO the Swallow can usually be had for considerably less. ie: $80 versus $105 typ. On a tight budget, SJ's Swallow is hard to beat, but possibly more importantly, is unquestionably the most popular contemporary charger out there so there's invariably always someone at the field who can answer any question about its operation.
To Masterpiece. Re your inquiry of the Platinum EX re the necessity of checking (& resetting) the voltage setting in the respective selected memory whenever you change battery type or # cells? That's my understanding, and essentially what the RED warning enclosure is all about.
As I interpret it, it's a 'feature' (someone fcuked up) of SJ's Platinum EX that it won't retain the previously selected and saved voltage setting per individual memory. So when you change the voltage in setup for any memory, it defaults it to that for ALL 10 memories, essentially rendering the 10 memory function semi-redundant from a simple "select 1 to 10 and press go" convenience standpoint. No prizes for guessing that's almost assuredly why it has recently been dumped in the marketplace at the slashed pricing it has.
As it's procedurally wise to crosscheck settings before execution anyway, as I see it it's little more inconvenience to simply have to dial in the required voltage if it requires changing than merely visually confirm it on the LCD. In the final analysis it's really only a minor annoyance more emotionally irritating than anything else by virtue of the knowledge that the unit has a unresolvable bug it shouldn't that the end user has to kludge around than actually effecting the unit's true usefulness in battery handling capability in any way. As an acquaintance had owned one for a while prior to me acquiring mine, I was aware of that bug before I bought, but decided it still a preferred buy to the EOS 5i (& Swallow) for the same $$$. Mind you, I'd probably had been considerably more annoyed if I'd paid the previous full retail price (as he did) for the unit only to belatedly discover that 'feature'.
Which leads to the comment if only they'd make the units conveniently end user flashable so firmware could quickly and easily be upgraded to the latest revision to fix bugs like this. I suppose SJ are almost wishing that as well given that word spread about the problem which undoubtedly affected Platinum EX sales at its previous pricepoint, although that provision could also be fraught with potential problems for them as well. Either way, given their production and distribution cost, even at their run-out pricing I doubt anyone in the supply chain is actually losing a quid.

RE: platinum ex charger
I want to reset the Delta peak voltage.
Are you talking about the Mah value eg 3300.
Nimh have a smaller peak voltage and my packs are getting hot after charge, so I want to set the Peak voltage to a lower value so they stop charging sooner.

RE: platinum ex charger
oh ok no probs what u need to do is scroll using ur + and - keys to it comes up to "User setup" then u need too puch the botton 'Setup" then it should come up with "1" cell type but the "1" should be flashing???
Then click "Start/select" a few time untill it comes up with "5mv" Flashing Thats ur delta peak and also th 3mv"
it says in the manual that for Nicds is 5mv - 15V adjustable
and for NIHH is 3 Mv - 10mv so if i were u just adjust the 3mv not the 5 mv
hope this helps
also just incase u didnt know if ur want the output/input press and hold + and - at the same time and the screen should pop up
tell me if u get it too work

RE: platinum ex charger
Im afraid im new at this so its the blind leading the blind.
But from what Ive read on the internet lately, safe charging 2000Mah 1C = 2amps, 3amps normally Ok. 5 Amps fast.
this is where I got this. http://www.rccaraction.com/articles/NiMHbatcare1.asp
There are so many different views though im not sure.
Im charging my 3300Mah packs at 3 amps, but they are getting quite warm. so i want to check the peak Voltage setting.
Thanks for the info. I have already set that value, but as it was in the user setup screen I didnt think it worked using the programmed settings, eg M1.
cheers

RE: platinum ex charger
3 amps is 3.0 on the platinum IE C=3.0.
It seems fine until the very end when they get quite warm. I think If your not in a rush charge them at a lower rate. But from what Ive read 1C 2 amps for a 2000Mah would be minmum. Nimh dont like trickle charge (according to the reference I gave you) so even 2 amps is OK 3 amps if your in a hurry (They are charging at 5 amps, which seems very high. I cannot see how there packs arnt getting very hot with that rate when mine are a 3 amps.

Ges, .01 amps, would have taken 2 days to charge.
1.0 amp = 1000Ma
0.1 amp = 0.1 X1000 = 100Ma
0.01 amps = 0.01 x 1000 = 10 Ma
Probably faster to charge it by sticking it out in the sun LOL.
Ill have to read up more, Theres too many different ideas ranging from 1-5 amps.

RE: platinum ex charger
No, 100 Ma = 0.1 on the Platinum (0.1 X 1000 = 100Ma) = 16 hours. So you selecting 0.01 = 10Ma which would require 160Hours. your battery would never br charged.
Set 1.0 (=1000Ma) should charge a 2000MAH in approximately 2 hours
Set 3.0 amps should take 40 minutes

RE: platinum ex charger
Aussie.
What batteries are you charging. Im talking Nimh packs for electric cars / Buggies.
If you talking about Tx and RX batteries Nicads its normal to charge them for 16 hours initially, then slow charge overnight at 50 - 100Ma.
No point fast charging your Tx battery if not required. i charge mine overnight with the slow charger.

RE: platinum ex charger
So charging your 2000Mah pack at 100Ma would be taking about 20 hours. 100Ma is probably considered trickle charging already, without going to 50Ma.
I read somewhere its considered fast charging if it charges in 1 hour or less.
You could at least charge at 1 amp or 2 amps (2 amps would take about an hour. That considered fast charging)

RE: platinum ex charger
I have this charger too - apart from the obvious flaw it's served me well. Anyway, after spending the better part of the evening searching for the manual, I'm posting a scanned copy (including the separate warning) for anyone that might need it.
