Default Overheating Battery Problem

I made a homemade 9.6 v battery pack with duracell 26500 mah Ni-MH batteries, using wire for the connections and shrink wrap to hold the pack together and I connected them together in series. I charged the battery pack correctly and it wasn't to hot after the charge so I decided to put it in my super sportster ep to give it a test fly. When I landed after flying for about 10 minustes I took the battery out of the plane I noticed that some of the shrink wrap had melted and some of the coverings on the individual battery cells had burned off. Is there any way that I can reduce the heat caused by this battery pack? Perhaps wrapping it in something before I cover it with shrink wrap? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail your suggestions to [email protected].

Thanks,

Strongman

How old are the cells?

Generally when NiMh's start to go south, they generate a lot of heat..

They are brand new AA size Duracell 2650 mah Ni-Mh batteries. I used eight of them connected in a series. This is how I arrived at a 9.6v battery pack. The origional battery that came with my plane was a 2100 mah Ni-CD, so I don't think amps are a problem.

those walmart batteries also heat up real bad, both the duracell and the energizer. I dunno what is the deal with them, they must have high resistance or something, and so they would not be very good for high discharge (ie more resistance = more heat in battery packs).

You say the stock pack was AA NiCD's?

No they were larger cells, but I didn't realize they had a lower interanal reisistance. Thanks for your help.
