12v gell cell charging??
Hi,
I apologize if this might have been covered here before.....
My normal charger that I use for charging my 12v gel cell for my flight box has gone bad. I live in Mexico and things aren't all that easy to replace quickly. Can someone tell me if my Accu-cycle Elite can charge my 12v gell cell??
I understand that LiPoly and lead acid/gell cell charging is a similar type of charging, and many chargers for Li Poly batteries can charge both types, but nothing I have found in my Accu-cycle documentation says that it can.
Does anyone have any info they can share on this subject for me?
Thanks,
AV8TOR

RE: 12v gell cell charging??
You can use your 12V automotive battery charger as long as you can limit the current to 2 amps or less. This type of charger provides a tapering charge and shouldn't harm your gel cell battery at all. Usually this type of charger has a current indicator. Keep an eye on it - the current will usually drop to a couple hundred mAs after a short time.

Ya know, after I posted, and thought about it a bit more, I realized that a LiPoly charger would have to be good for at least 4 cells to charge a 12v gel cel, and the Accu Cycle is only good to 3 cells. Now I feel dumb for posting....
Sorry.
Guess I'll charge it off my car system with a cigarette plug until I can get a 12v charger again....

the only stupid question is the question never asked....

If you use an automotive battery charger, keep in mind, even with a charge current of only a few hundred milliamps, it won't take a long time to charge a 7 ah battery.

Check out www.rcbatteryclinic.com for some good advice on charging all kinds of batteries. One of his warnings is to not exceed a 0.1C charge rate on gell cells, 700 milliamperes in the case of a 7 amphour battery. It is not wise to charge any type of lead/acid battery at high rates.
