Put the battey in a cup of salt water to neatralize the cells then recycle it to its correct battery recycling center. Better luck next time. Oh by the way charge your packs in a ceramic jar or desighnated "safe" area. Treat the packs like nytroglycerian.

Wait a second, maybe that's getting a little carried away.
I'm not sure how to correctly dispose of the material that drained onto your carpet, but I would surely get in touch with the company that sold you the pack to find out. Also, ask for a refund and free replacement at the least. Not sue what the liability on their part is, but I have a feeling that you will be stuck paying for the damage to your home. Sorry.
I always charge my batteries in the garage. This is true for my lead acid batts for my kids' Power Wheels and my RC batts. They are only NIMH, but might as well play it safe.
